IN MY LIFE:
I do my best to donate blood every eight weeks. For me, it’s a small thing I can do to make a difference in the lives of others.
This morning when I went to give blood, I made it through the initial screening. But when they did my finger prick to test my iron. It came back pretty low. They tried a second poke on my other hand, it still showed up low.
I was so sad.
It wasn’t just the time and energy I took to get to the appointment, it was more than that. I felt like I was letting people down.
But if I’m being really reflective and honest, I’d have to admit that it showed me I need to take better care of myself. In my effort to care for others, I’ve allowed self-care to fall down on my priority list.
When you’re faced with the numbers in your face, there’s no denying the reality of what you’ve allowed to happen. I realize I wasn’t given a life-threatening diagnosis, but for me it was a wake up call.
So not only do I need to work on getting my iron numbers up, but I have to work on slowing down and re-prioritizing. If I don’t, I’ll be of no use to the people I love most in this world, not to mention the people in my community I’m trying to help.
PRAYER FOCUS: Self-Control
This isn’t a “fun” thing to pray over ourselves, but it is necessary. Even when talking about dreams, it’s important to have enough self-control so you can say no to “good” things in lieu of saving your energy for the “best” and necessary things in your life.
