In Pastor Steven’s first sermon of 2025, he preached from 2 Kings 6:1-7. He joked that since he never heard a sermon on this passage before he was fairly certain it was going to be one of the best sermons on 2 Kings 6 we ever heard.
If I could sum up his message in one sentence it would be this: Expand your expectation of God’s presence.
Here are the other nuggets of faith I took from this Elevation Church message, which was preached on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Elevation Church Sermon Notes: Where You Meet With God
Pastor Steven Furtick began with an illustration about how it’s never been easier to pretend like you’re in a place you’re not. Thanks to social media, society can show it even when you don’t have it.
Remember, most of the things in our lives have small beginnings (both good and bad). Blessings create as many problems as struggle.
2 Kings 6:1-7
The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us. Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.” And he said, “Go.” Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?” “I will,” Elisha replied. And he went with them. They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!” The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float. “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.
Verse 1 outlines the complaint: “The place where we meet…is too small”
Verse 2 states the permission and highlights how many times “us” is used.
Verse 3 details the importance of presence. Don’t just ask for permission, ask for him to come. The prophet represents the presence and word of God.
Don’t go for your goal without God!
Complaining vs. Creating
Every time you are tempted to complain, it should be an invitation to create instead. (They weren’t rebuked for complaining, but they were blessed for continuing).
Stop complaining to people who can’t change it! Even if I’m off, God is still on.
Where to Meet God
The place where you meet with God is not meant to be a building. Build new patterns and recruit new people so the presence of God permeates your life.
Some things God has commanded you to do clearly: I got a plan –> PRESENCE is my plan.
Sometimes we’re waiting for God to speak, and he’s waiting for us to step. The word of God is internal and eternal.
God wants to be with you as you build. It’s an issue of willingness, not ability.
The Meaning Behind Verses 5-6
Verse 5 went from “Let’s Go” to “Oh No!”.
In verse 6, he didn’t condemn, but guided him to the place. God wants to be with you when you built and when it breaks.
The place you meet with God is where you need him the most.
Faith is where we meet God; grace is where God meets you.
