Job’s friends were quick to share advice when his life seemed hopeless, but Job too was quick to challenge them right back…
Would it turn out well if he examined you? Could you deceive him as you might deceive a mortal? – Job 13:9
Devotion Day 6: Examine Me
Yesterday we read about Job’s complaint and I, for one, found hope in the fact that just because something is happening to you doesn’t mean you have to like it.
But it’s one thing to complain to God in prayer, it’s quite another to walk around whining and moaning all day.
In verses seven and eight, Job challenges his ‘friends’ with this:
Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf?
Will you speak deceitfully for him…Will you argue the case for God?
Too often we feel we must ‘pick up the torch’ and right the wrongs of the world. Yet God never promises us a perfect life in this imperfect world. Rather, He does promise us all His riches in Heaven.
So just as Job challenged His friends to look inside and examine themselves before casting complaints and judgements elsewhere, so too I offer that challenge for all of us today.
