Then he sent his brothers away, and as they were leaving he said to them, “Don’t quarrel on the way!”
Genesis 45:24
Why do we find it so easy to complain, even after receiving a blessing…
Devotion Day 27: Don’t Quarrel
It’s hard to imagine how you’d feel after learning the brother you had sold into slavery was not only alive, but now in charge of all of Egypt.
Not only would the sons of Joseph now have their physical needs met, they got to return to their father to deliver the news that his beloved son, Joseph, was in fact alive! And yet the last thing Joseph said to his brothers as they were leaving was, “Don’t quarrel along the way!”
Was that based on their actions while in Joseph’s presence that day? Or simply because he knew his brothers too well?
They had just received clothing, silver, food and livestock to bring back to their father, yet they still had to be reminded to get along during their journey home and not argue.
I could be reading this passage the wrong way, but when I read the Bible, it always speaks to me in light of my present circumstances. Even though we are going through tough times and it would be easier to focus on what’s going wrong, it’s always possible to find something good in every circumstance.
Philippians 2:14-15a reminds us to “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God…” It’s always easy to find something (or someone) to complain about, but the greater reward comes when we could complain but choose to pray blessings instead.
