When Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you just keep looking at each other?”
Genesis 42:1 (NIV)
Stop standing around and do something about your situation…
Devotion Day 26: Stop Standing Around
It’s easy to have a pity party when things aren’t going our way. Likewise, it’s just as easy to blame our circumstances rather than take action.
When there was a famine in the land, Jacob had to be the one to basically tell his sons to stop standing around and do something to improve their situation.
No matter what version of Genesis 42:1 you read, Jacob caught his sons in inactivity:
- MSG: When Jacob learned that there was food in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you sit around here and look at one another? I’ve heard that there is food in Egypt. Go down there and buy some so that we can survive and not starve to death.”
- TLB: When Jacob heard that there was grain available in Egypt he said to his sons, “Why are you standing around looking at one another?
- NLT: When Jacob heard that grain was available in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why are you standing around looking at one another?
They could have continued to stand around and talked about the famine. Or they could have figured out a way to get more food. In this situation, they may not have been able to grow food. However, there was a solution to their problem, they just had to look beyond what was right in front of them.
After living through a global pandemic, it’s easy to focus on all that’s gone wrong, all we’ve lost and all that’s changed. But if we’re willing to get up, move around, change our perspective, get creative, think of new ways to do things and ask for help, we just might discover the answer to our problems are within our reach.
We simply need to move.
