“…and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
Genesis 28:22b
Could this be the first tithe…
Devotion Day 21: The First Tithe
When I think of tithing in the Bible, I typically think of Malachi 3:10:
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
Malachi 3:10
Not only is it the only time God says to ‘test him’ (to my knowledge), but it talks of the blessing that comes from tithing.
Yet in the very first book of the Old Testament, I found Jacob making a vow to God promising him a tenth of all he receives.
Earlier in verse 16, I was struck by Jacob’s dream. Once he awoke from sleeping, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
How often do we find ourselves in the midst of a situation, feeling forgotten and alone, only later to realize that God was palpably with us all along?
Hear me today when I say this: God IS with you and He WILL bless you when you open your eyes to see Him and open your hands to both receive and give back.
