I have made a covenant with my eyes… – Job 31:1
It’s one thing to make a promise to God or another person, but it’s quite another to make a covenant with a body part…
Day 11 Devotion: Too Close Too Soon
I remember after I became a Christian in my mid-twenties and wanted to embark on a different kind of dating relationship.
You see, up until that point, I sought love and approval from others, including men, and didn’t find that value in myself. Needless to say, I got too close too soon.
So I marched into a Christian bookstore and asked for any books they could give me on Christian dating. Not surprisingly, the majority of the books were written for and targeted towards teens.
But that didn’t stop me. I bought a handful and soaked up as much as I could.
Perhaps the most important thing I took away and clung to was a simple yet profoundly impactful phrase from: And the Bride Wore White: Seven Secrets to Sexual Purity by Dannah Gresh. In it she said these five words that I clung to for years:
Stay Public and Stay Vertical
Sure, it may sound silly to many of you, but for someone who had made bad dating decisions in the past, these words were like gold to me.
I had to make a promise not only to myself and to God, but to my body as well. And I had to make that decision BEFORE the heat of the moment, not in the midst of it.
So when Job talks about making a covenant with his eyes in the verse above, I know and understand it all too well.
And it’s not just about your body, but recognizing what your weakness is and staking a claim that you will no longer allow it to be so.
