IN MY LIFE:
Last night I had the opportunity to dine with a friend at the new North Italia Franklin. We’ve eaten at North Italia Nashville (in the Green Hills Mall) before and loved it, so it was a treat to be able to experience their newest location. And it did not disappoint!
First of all, the North Italia Franklin opened in a new shopping & dining development on the north side of McEwen just West of I-65 (about 15 minutes south of Nashville). I loved the vibe inside. Whether you’re looking for casual outdoor dining, a cool bar scene or a comfortable dinner setting for extended family and friends, North Italia Franklin accommodates them all.
Second of all, our server was a gem and may have been my long lost twin. Everything I was thinking I wanted she suggested before I could even say it, right down to the delicious virgin mojito.
Last but not least, the food is incredible. I’m not one who normally likes to eat out at Italia restaurants, but North Italia is not your average Italian restaurant. Not only are all the pastas homemade, there is a freshness to the menu that is rare.
I’m normally not one to force menu options in my reviews, but I feel very strongly about certain dishes at North Italia.
You MUST start with the Chef’s Board: think of it as an upscale charcuterie board that feeds 2-4 people.
You also can’t move past the appetizers without ordering the White Truffle Garlic Bread. The combination of the crusty on the outside, chewy on the inside bread topped with cool house made ricotta and mozzarella is luscious and irresistible.
I really wanted to order something other than the Glazed Short Rib Cavatelli pasta, but when our server said it was her favorite as well, I couldn’t resist. I know their Chicken Parmesan is a crowd favorite. I also really wanted to try some of the entree sides like pesto farro and red wine ristretto, but in the end, I went with my gut (literally).
My friend Mary Elizabeth got the Diver Scallops with Parmesan Risotto. I didn’t think I liked scallops, but this was the perfectly cooked and composed dish.
And even though we didn’t think we could eat another bite, we were more than tempted by the dessert menu.
There were two desserts with lemon that caught our eye, the Bombolini & Italian Butter Cake. Since we couldn’t decide, we asked our server to surprise us.
She brought out the Bombolini: little Italian donuts rolled in sugar and filled with Meyer Lemon Curd and Vanilla Mascarpone. Just as I was running my finger along that plate to get every drop of the lemon deliciousness (literally), she also brought us out the butter cake!
As I was eating it, I literally found myself wondering when I could get back there to eat it again. It made me emotional. It was like everything I loved in a dessert all on one plate, with a surprise in every bite. The cake was a beautiful marriage between a pound cake and angle food cake, topped with blueberry compote, whipped lemon creme fraiche, cinnamon crumble topping and, my favorite part, basil! Pure deliciousness.
I’m so grateful to have been invited to have this experience at North Italia Franklin and I can’t wait to get back to enjoy it again.
