I’m speechless. I don’t know what to say other than I want you to PROMISE ME you’ll see this movie. It’s hard to put my feelings into words, but I’ll do my best in this Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 2022 honest review.

I have so many feelings after meeting Marcel on the big screen.
I honestly had no idea what I was walking into when I was invited to see this film. My husband watched the trailer right before walking into the theater and he thought it had a “Wallace & Grommit” vibe.
Once the movie started, it seemed to morph into a bit of “The Office”.
But as I started to listen to Marcel’s sweet voice and quick wit, it felt like the result of Saturday Night Live writers trapped in a small room overnight together (and I mean that in the highest compliment possible).
The combination of stop-motion animation blended with live-action actors and scenes blew my mind. I’ve never seen anything like this movie before. Watch our video review for more of our thoughts and reflections:
Synopsis of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
If I failed to describe the plot of this soon-to-be classic, here’s the official synopsis:
Marcel, a one inch-tall shell, lives with his grandmother Connie, the only residents of their community after being left behind in a mysterious exodus. When an unexpected brush with fame opens the door to reuniting with his loved ones, Marcel sets out on a sweeping, emotional journey to reclaim what he thought was lost and discover the family he never knew he had.
Keep in mind, you WILL laugh a lot during MTSWSO. Even big, loud guffaws out of nowhere. But you will cry as well.
At first I thought it was just me and the other mom sitting next to me (grab extra napkins from concessions before heading to your seat). But we weren’t alone. Even some of the men around us shed a tear or two.
Marcel is so Quotable
Believe it or not, I actually tried to write down Marcel quotes throughout the movie, but for whatever reason, my note disappeared. Suffice it to say, Marcel had brilliant commentary on a variety of subjects. The following may not be word for word what he said, but it captures his essence:
- “It’s a group of people, but it’s an audience, not a community” (about YouTube)
- “…I like that about myself, and I have a lot of other great qualities as well”
- ‘Guess why I smile…because it’s worth it”

This movie started as a short in 2010. I don’t know how I missed it because it seemed to take the internet by storm.
While some may wonder why it took so long for Marcel to make it onto the big screen, Jenny Slate said in an interview on the 3rd Hour of Today that the feature film took seven years to develop.
I Never Knew I Needed Isabella Rossellini in My Life
Isabella Rossellini voices Connie, Marcel’s grandmother. I recognized her iconic voice almost instantly. Now, if I ever need to hear advice, encouragement or even just have something inspirational read to me, I’d like for it to be done in Isabella Rossellini’s voice.
And if you’re of the generation who doesn’t know the incredible work of Ms. Rossellini, at least watch this iconic scene from Friends:

The Marcel the Shell with Shoes on 2022 release date is June 24, 2022. That being said, this adorable film may take a little longer to make its way to theaters across the country.
