Ah, the search for the perfect prom dress. While you and your teenager may not see eye to eye when it comes to prom fashion, I just may have a solution for you both. Allow me to help you find modest prom dresses your teen will love.
How to Find Modest Prom Dresses Your Teen Will Love
Though we’ve searched for dresses before, this year was my daughter’s first year in high school. As such, dress shopping took on a whole new meaning.
If you’re the parent of a teenager, especially a teenage girl, you likely don’t always agree on fashion. And if you’ve looked on their Instagram account lately, you know prom dresses keep getting skimpier.
So how can you make find a modest prom dress (under $100, ideally) that both you and your daughter agree on. And better yet, how can you make the prom dress shopping experience a positive one for you both? These are the tips that have helped me.
Start with a Color or Print
This may seem basic, but trust me on this one. If you can decide on a favorite color or print for the prom dress, it makes the prom shopping experience so much smoother.
Perhaps it’s your daughter’s favorite color. Maybe it’s a color she hasn’t heard any of her friends talking about. Or even better yet, a bold print that will help her stand out. Whatever the preference, when you start the experience with that focus, it helps squash many arguments before they start.
Agree on a Dress Length
Again, in the spirit of stopping any dress disagreements before they start, set some basic parameters. This could include dress length or whether you’re OK with a strapless dress or not.
Keep in mind, long dresses don’t always mean modest prom dresses. Some can have an unusually high slit. I’ve also seen two-piece prom outfits that have a long skirt, but tight top that exposes the midriff. Once you come to an agreement, this helps to further narrow your search.
One way to stay on trend while modest is to opt for a dress with an illusion neckline, like this Adrianna Papell gown:
Normally $179, this silver gown comes down to $101.99 with code SALE right now.
Agree on a Prom Dress Price
Many parents set a prom dress budget of $100. Because our daughter doesn’t wear dresses very often in her daily life, we said her prom dress price could not exceed $50.
Knowing me, you’re probably already guessing where we started our search for the perfect prom dance dress. That’s right: Macy’s!
Right on Macy’s prom dress main page, they feature dresses under $100. Here are just a few of my favorites:
Shop Prom Dresses Online
Most of your prom dress frustrations can be solved by shopping for prom dresses online. No longer do you have to hunt down your size or ask if they have it in another store. And don’t get me started about having to wait outside the dressing room for her to decide whether or not she wants to show me what she looks like.
And then there’s those lights…
You can eliminate all those frustrations by ordering a variety of dresses in a range of sizes and having them delivered to your door. That way, she can try them on in the comfort of her room and you can both be comfortable when making your decision.
Right now, not only is Macy’s having a sale on their prom dress selection through April 22, but you can also get free shipping on orders over $75!
So What Did She Look Like?
I’m glad you asked. My daughter found a beautiful navy dress that I believe she actually could wear again for under $50 at Macy’s. I know I’m biased, but isn’t she gorgeous?
