It’s been hard for me to find the right words to express how I feel about everything that’s happened in the wake of Hurricane Helene…
Helping Hurricane Helene Survivors {Daily Dash: October 1, 2024}
IN MY LIFE:
It hasn’t even been a week since Hurricane Helene tore through the Gulf Coast of Florida, Georgia, Eastern Tennessee, and Western North Carolina. It’s crazy to think that I was supposed to drive to Chapel Hill to see my daughter on Friday and now part of I-40 is gone.
One of the reasons we moved out of South Florida all those years ago was because of the hurricanes. It was awful to wonder whether we’d get hit with disaster for six months out of the year.
It can also be hard to know how to help when you’re removed (either by personal or literal proximity) from such natural disasters. The Red Cross is always a great place to start, but I’ve listed some resources below that the University of North Carolina put together:
- ReadyNC: for those most directly affected & as a source of information for current conditions
- N.C. Department of Administration & American Red Cross are accepting donations and provide immediate disaster relief
- Volunteer NC has a list of volunteer opportunities
- List of local Western North Carolina organizations compiled by BPR to help and donate to flood victims
And of course, if you know of someone who has been impacted, reach out to them personally. It’s great to help immediately after these storms, but more often than not, the real help is needed and appreciated in the weeks and months to come once the media coverage stops.
IN THE NEWS:
- Vice Presidential debate will take place tonight
- Former President Carter turns 100 today
- Pete Rose & Dikembe Mutombo passed away
- Walt Disney World’s 53rd birthday
IN THE WORD:
Crises always reveal a person’s true character – Oswald Chambers
PRAYER FOCUS: Compassion in Suffering
Lord, reach into the furthest regions and remind our hearts and our souls that light is coming and hope will prevail.
