If you follow me at all on social media, then It’s been hard not to see all the pictures of our recent family camping adventure. While I didn’t take as many photos as I typically would on a trip, everyone wanted to be sure there was photographic proof that I did in fact go camping!
While I wouldn’t exactly say we’re planning another family camping trip anytime soon, there was one element (aside from the company) that excited to me more than any other: the food.
Yes, I was most looking forward to cooking over a campfire, trying new camp food with friends and, of course, eating hot dogs and hamburgers to my heart’s content.
As I hit the grocery store the morning of our family camping trip, I had cut out a coupon for King’s Hawaiian buns. I’ve always loved their dinner rolls and I’d heard such great things about the hot dog and hamburger buns, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try them out.
Sure enough, once we got camp set up with our small group, the grills got fired up and the hot dogs and hamburgers came out!
The hot dogs cooked quicker (obviously), so I split a hot dog with my husband because we just couldn’t wait for the burgers to get done.
The King’s Hawaiian hot dog buns resemble a piece of thick cut bread folded in half and have that signature sweetness to it. I noticed that it paired better with some of the sweeter sausages we tried later than it did with say a hot dog or a kielbasa.
However, the hamburger buns were the perfect combination of flavor, softness and size to hold our burger and with all its campfire fixings.
To be honest, neither buns lasted long in our camping kitchen because they were so tasty (and I’m pretty sure one of the other kids even purloined one of our hot dog buns to use for his PB&J 😉
So as it turns out, I got to try two new things this past weekend: camping and King’s Hawaiian buns…and I’m grateful that the latter made the former a little more palatable!
