I’ve pulled together the perfect fall capsule wardrobe for moms. Because I’ve been traveling so much lately, I’ve learned to make a lot of outfits with a few essential fashion items.
How Many Clothes Should be in a Fall Capsule Wardrobe?
The ideal fall capsule wardrobe contains 7 basic pieces of clothing:
- Dark Jeans
- White T-shirt or Button Down
- Black Blazer or Cardigan
- Hi-Low Sweatshirt
- Black Leggings
- Denim Jacket
- Long-Sleeve T-shirt Dress
Keep in mind, I don’t expect you to only wear seven things on rotation all fall. These are the essential seven pieces of clothing every woman should travel with. They make a great foundation for any fall closet.
Most true seasonal capsule wardrobes contain anywhere between 35-50 clothing items. You’ll notice I didn’t include shoes in the count above either.
Fall Shoe Essentials
There are 3 pairs of shoes I always travel with during the fall:
- White sneakers with a fun detail
- Riding Boots
- Dressy flats

Closed-toe shoes are essential to protect you from rain or snow. When traveling, I always wear my boots so I still have enough room if I only pack a carry-on suitcase.
The sneakers are comfy enough to walk around sightseeing all day. I can also use them for a light workout in a hotel gym. When at home, they keep me looking trendy without trying too hard.
A cute pair of flats should be able to transition effortlessly from day to night. And one of the things I most look forward to wearing in the fall is riding boots. Boots work with everything from leggings to jeans. And I love wearing them with tights and the Sophie dress you’ll see below.
What Should Moms Wear in 2022?
I know many of us got used to wearing yoga pants and hoodies over the last year. But moms in 2022 are embracing the opportunity to get dressed again.
Yes, this means jeans with zippers and not just jeggings.
We don’t have to forsake comfort completely. By wearing clothes with more structure, we’re actually doing our figures a favor. Look for clothes made from cotton or modal that have a little give, but still flatter your body.
The key is to not try to dress like your teenager. You also don’t want to embarrass your kids if you have to get out of your car and make a trip into the school office. This is why you can’t go wrong with a basic white t-shirt and dark jeans.
Keep a blazer in the back seat just in case the teacher texts you for a last-minute meeting or friends ask if you can meet them for coffee after drop-off.

How Do I Update My Wardrobe on a Budget?
A capsule wardrobe is the best way to update your wardrobe on a budget. It helps bring focus to where to spend your money.

Lilly Pulitzer at Belk
You may have noticed I left one item from the capsule wardrobe out of the gallery above: the t-shirt dress. My favorite long-sleeved t-shirt dress I travel with is the Lilly Pulitzer Sophie dress.
I actually love shopping Lilly Pulitzer at Belk. I often find Lilly items there that I can no longer find in their corporate stores. Sometimes even Lilly Pulitzer is included in Belk sales. However, the Sophie dress is not included in this Fall Sale, which is why I didn’t put it in the capsule gallery above.
That said, it is worth the investment and this is a foundational piece worth your money.
