Skip Something to Help a Child
Shelene Bryan, author, speaker and founder of Skip1.org shows us how skipping one thing we love on our birthday this month can benefit children around the world.
Before I Go, I Need You to Know: Listen to Your Body
Our world has witnessed a lot of loss and stress recently. Here in Tennessee, we’ve seen deadly flooding and then experienced Hurricane Ida just weeks later. Even if you weren’t directly impacted by these events, chances are you know someone who was.
I will speak from experience that I often underestimate the physical and emotional toll of these cumulative events. I “power through” or “suck it up” because I believe what I’m not going through is as bad as what is happening to others. But my attempt to put others before myself often leads to a neglect of my own health that actually prevents me from caring for the people I love in the way I would want.
Case in point, during a recent trip to Vanderbilt Children’s hospital for a follow-up appointment for my daughter, I found myself in the ER. Her doctor didn’t like how I was looking and then the room started spinning, so she had the pediatric ER team come assess me, which led to me being taken to the adult ER.
I’m thankful for the doctor’s attentiveness and concern, saying she couldn’t in good conscience let me leave in the state I was in. I also found myself feeling embarrassed that I’d let myself get to a state that required another adult to intervene. I came face to face with the reality that I’d failed to practice what I preach.
Amy Grant summed up this notion in an interview she did with People magazine. She said, “Everybody’s on their own hamster wheel, but you have to listen to your own body…You have to find your own voice and say, ‘something is wrong here.’”
Amy learned that health applies to every part of a person: mind, body, and spirit. They all work together. I view it like the Fruit of the Spirit; even though Galatians 5:22 mentions nine characteristics, they all come together to form the singular “fruit”.
Likewise, Matthew 22:37 reminds us to “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ When we extract or ignore individual elements, we shortchange the value of the whole.
While I believe all of us have superpowers, we’re not superhuman. If we don’t stop and listen to our bodies, we actually limit what we can accomplish.
So if you take one thing away from me today, please take the time to stop and listen to what your body is trying to tell you, because if you don’t listen to its whisper, you’re not going to like what it says when it starts to shout.

Wardrobe Sponsor: Lilly Pulitzer
It always makes me smile when someone tells me they love what I’m wearing, and then when I tell them it’s from Lilly Pulitzer, they say, “That’s Lilly?”
You may think summer is my favorite time to wear Lilly Pulitzer, but I actually love Lilly in the fall. That’s when they do a lot of monochromatic prints. After all, who else could pull off a blue-on-blue leopard print?
And if you are as obsessed with this “Oyster Bay Navy My Favorite Spot” print as much as I am, you’ll definitely want to grab their Evita Tote; it makes a great weekend bag or computer tote.

Jewelry Provided by Kendra Scott
I could not wait to wear the new Kendra Scott Game Day collection on the show this month!
I love when my favorite brands come up with collections that go along with my favorite pastimes: case in point, Kendra Scott & football!
Now you can find some of your favorite Kendra Scott jewelry pieces and settings in the colors of your favorite collegiate and professional teams.
I made it easy on my friends at Kendra Scott in Nashville (Green Hills) this month because I knew I was coming in wanting to support our Tennessee Titans with the cobalt blue pieces (although the navy dusted glass is gorgeous as well).
Here are quick links to the Kendra Scott jewelry I wore on the September show:
