I watched “The Boys in the Boat” last night and I wish I liked it more…
Honest The Boys in the Boat Movie Review & Societal Reflections {Daily Dash: November 29, 2023}
IN MY LIFE:
I saw an advance screening of “The Boys in the Boat”, directed by George Clooney. Based on a true story, the film follows the journey of the University of Washington JV 8-man crew boat.
I don’t think it counts as spoilers if I share the plot since it’s historical. In the 1930’s, the university holds an open call for rowers. Because of The Great Depression, many young men were simply looking to make the team because of the free room and pay that went along with making the team.
These unlikely underdogs not only go on to beat the Varsity squad, but they end up going all the way to Germany to win the gold medal in the 1936 Olympics.
Unfortunately, the film moved slowly, the characters weren’t as fully developed as I would have hoped, and there were missed opportunities to tell more of the backstory.
However, two things did make me emotional:
- Remembering just how long Hitler was in power and the absurdity of some who still align with those beliefs.
- The pace of life a century ago and the appreciation of the small things.
We have so much demanding our attention these days. AND we have access to so many things, and yet there is still an epidemic of discontentment.
It wasn’t a bad movie by any means, but there is no reason for you to pay the money to see this in a movie theater.

PRAYER FOCUS: Contentment
I pray that we would learn to be content in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in and with whatever we have.
