Ms. Cheap has compiled her annual list of the best FREE things to do in summertime. While she writes for The Tennessean, you may be able to find similar programs in your area. Click here for the full story, but here are a few highlights:
• Mark your calendar for 2 p.m. on July 12 to see the Meet Mr. Lincoln program at the Hermitage Library featuring Lincoln look-alike Dennis Boggs, whose program on Lincoln is truly marvelous. If you have school-age children, don’t miss this. 880-3951.
• Make a trip to the Farmers’ Market. It’s great fun to walk the stalls outside and enjoy the restaurants inside. And it’s also a good place to take pictures, with blooming flowers or luscious fresh fruit as a backdrop. The Nashville Farmers’ Market is at 900 Eighth Ave. N. The market’s Summer Grill Party and Ugly Tomato Festival is 11 a.m.–2 p.m. June 16 with food, fun and music from the Les Kerr Band. 880-2001 or www.nashvillefarmers

Free tours
• Purity Dairies shows how ice cream is processed and packaged. Includes a free ice cream novelty.You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy this, but they want you to call first. 760-2271, ext. 489.
• Visit with firefighters at a Metro Fire Department fire hall (call first). 862-5421.
• Find out how our newspaper works at The Tennessean. Tour our newsrooms and see our production process. Call 664-2171 or e-mail tours@tennessean.com to make a reservation.
• Downtown churches are also open. Look inside Downtown Presbyterian Church at 154 Fifth Ave. N. to see its 1849 Egyptian Revival architecture. Visit the church office between 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. weekdays. 254-7584.
• Take advantage of library programs. The Nashville Public Library’s main library and 20 branches have more than 250 special events for children and young adults in June and July. It’s a full schedule of fun — everything from storytellers, magicians and puppet shows to craft days, music and more. 862-5800 or www.library.nashville.org.
