One Month Post-Hysterectomy {Daily Dash: March 31, 2025}

My hysterectomy was one month ago, I just drove for the second time, and this will be my only Daily Dash for the month of March…

One Month Post-Hysterectomy {Daily Dash: March 31, 2025}

IN MY LIFE:

It’s hard to believe it’s not only been a month since my surgery, but a month since I’ve been on the Daily Dash with you. It’s surreal to be back behind the wheel again. Today was only the second time I’ve driven, and it was just a quick trip to get bananas and put mail in the mailbox. 

My recovery has been interesting:

  • Week 1: I don’t remember leaving bed much. I was heavily medicated, dealing with a lot of pain, but just focusing on rest.
  • Week 2: I felt a little more coherent and tried to breathe more fresh air outside, but still couldn’t really sit up or stand for too long.
  • Week 3: I had my first post-op visit (which was my first time in a car after the surgery), and although they said everything looked good, they said it would likely be another 2 weeks before I started feeling more ‘normal’. Unfortunately, that night I went home and experienced a fever, muscle aches, and chills. They believe I had an internal infection and spent most of that week in bed.
  • Week 4: Fever went away, but I didn’t start feeling like myself again until this past Friday.

I’m still dealing with some other unfortunate symptoms, but the thing that struck me was what the nurse said to me at my first post-op visit. She said even though I’ll start feeling more like myself after 4 weeks, I still had to wait another 2 weeks before I started to return to my regular activities. It was such an important reminder that even when someone might look healthy or feel ok on the outside, healing may still need to take place on the inside.

If you or someone you know is having a hysterectomy, the one thing you need to buy is this hysterectomy star pillow. It’s what multiple people told me to get before going to the hospital, and they were right. Not only can you slide the seatbelt through it so it doesn’t put pressure on your incisions and abdomen, but it does so much more:

  • I now sleep with it every night on top of my belly so it helps absorb the pressure
  • You can also slip your hand through the same slit to hold it against you.
  • There’s a small pocket on top of that to slide your phone in (or a book, remote, etc – anything you want to keep handy)
  • There’s another pouch on the flip side so you can slip a heating pad or ice pack in to help with pain and swelling after surgery

No matter what you’re going through, there may be more to get through, so keep going. The destination or ending may not look like what you expect, so don’t give up too early.
