IN THE WORD:
This Week’s Verse: Colossians 3:5-6
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.
Troubles almost always make us look to God, but his blessings tend to divert our attention elsewhere- Oswald Chambers
IN MY LIFE
A few days ago (after a hospital visit with my son), I mentioned feeling blessed, especially after watching Queen of Katwe.
Here is a synopsis of the film:
Based on the vibrant true story of a young girl (Madina Nalwanga) from the streets of Uganda whose world changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. It is a remarkable story of perseverance against all odds that will leave viewers feeling humbled and inspired.
There were several reasons we wanted to see this movie:
1. It’s a Disney film. They tell great stories. Period.
2. It’s a movie about (among other things) chess, which my son happens to love more than just about anything else right now.
3. It tells a story of a place and people we knew very little about and would likely never have known about.
Queen of Katwe may not have the box office pizazz of a Star Wars Film per se, but once you start watching, you can’t stop. We couldn’t believe the depth of characters and story lines. We laughed, we cried, we cheered, and ultimately, we held each other a little closer at the end of it all.
This truly is a remarkable film.
It already arrived on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) on Jan. 10 and you can get it on Blu-ray™, DVD and On-Demand on Jan. 31…and I sincerely hope you do. Your entire family will thank you.
