There is an epidemic sweeping the nation…
No, I’m not talking about Swine Flu (or whatever technical name they’ve since given it), but something I would dare say is even more dangerous.
Across the country, parents are throwing words out to their children that they never follow through with. Threats have been tossed out, commands have been uttered, and directions have been assigned….yet little ears have yet to hear them.
Is it possible that our children have become so used to our lack of follow through that they simply hear our voice like the “Wah wah, wah wah” of Charlie Brown’s teacher and proceed on with their own agenda? Not that my or my children would every be guilty of this mind you, but on our travels across the Southeast and Midwest over the past month, I’ve seen so many parents talking to their children, while a minute percentage actually expect their own children to listen.
Has our culture reverted to obeying the whims of 3 year olds?
Now I’m just as guilty as not following through or even tuning out those sweet little voices at the end of the day, but it’s so interesting to me that when I see someone else do it, I’m appalled! Perhaps the best lesson we can all learn happens when we turn the mirror on ourselves instead of the magnifying glass on others…
