Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? – Job 2:10b
Even though it’s our first jump across books of the Bible in our chronological reading plan, the themes are remarkably the same…
Day 4 Devotion
Earlier this week, we spoke about setting up memorials so that we remember God’s goodness even in the toughest of times.
I think it’s safe to say that few biblical figures suffered like Job did, yet even in the midst of some of his darkest days, he uttered the words in verse ten above.
And as much as I love this reminder, today’s devotion isn’t about the one who is suffering, but instead what the rest of us are called to do when others suffer.
During a recent sermon, our campus pastor spoke about the devastating loss of his unborn baby just weeks before she was due. Though the tragedy happened a decade ago and he and his wife now have three children, he still vividly remembers friends, neighbors and church members just sitting with them for hours on end – both in the hospital and then in their home – without saying a word.
Likewise, there was a noticeable absence of others who steered clear simply because they didn’t know what to say.
But then we see evidence of this very scenario in Job:
Then they say on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because the saw how great his suffering was. – Job 2:13
As humans, it seems natural for us to want to fix things. But let’s face it, while words are meaningful, they’re not always necessary…and the lack of them should never get in the way of meeting the needs of others.
Remember this: we don’t always need to speak to someone during their suffering: simply being present with them is enough.
