Hilton President Hotel: A review that stands the test of time

IMG 3178 300x225 Hilton President Hotel: A review that stands the test of timeTravel Should Take You Places”

When you visit the Hilton President hotel in Kansas City, MO, that is exactly what will happen. You will be transported back in time while enjoying the luxury of a newly refurbished hotel.

Originally opened back in February of 1926 with 400 rooms, it was the only hotel in the city to make its own ice on premises. In 1929, Herbert Hoover gave his presidential acceptance speech from the mezzanine. In the 1940’s, the Drum Room lounge became a quintessential stop on the music circuit, hosting names like Patsy Cline (who played her last concert there), Jack Benny and many Rat Pack members.

In the mid-80’s, the hotel closed and it would be over 20 years later before it would open its doors again. With the building of the Sprint Center and the revitalization of the Power & Light District (12 city blocks of restaurants, clubs and cultural attractions), Hilton took over the property. 3 million dollars and a year later, the Hilton President hotel was reopened in January of 2006 with 216 guest rooms and 80-90% of the original architectural features still intact.

Being a boutique hotel, you won’t find some of the modern amenities that you would expect, such as a pool or a fitness room, but you will find a piece of history and a sense of hospitality that’s unparalleled.
IMG 3120 300x225 Hilton President Hotel: A review that stands the test of time

My niece’s wedding brought us to the Hilton President, and it’s not a surprise why she chose the venue. The stunning Congress Ballroom situated on the 12th floor offers sweeping views of the city as well as an elegant charm that’s lacking in so many hotel ballrooms these days. If you’re looking for a less formal meeting space, visit the Aztec Ballroom on the 2nd floor that was actually featured in the film “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge” starring Paul Newman.

The Drum Room Lounge, which still offers live jazz music on Friday & Saturday nights for free to the public, now boasts one of the best steaks in Kansas City thanks to the expert hand of Executive Chef, Eric Carter.

But what truly stands out in my mind most from our visit is the people. From the moment we pulled up outside the hotel to find Kevin welcoming us and helping us with our bags, we felt like a VIP, even though no-one knew who we were! The hospitality continued as we arrived at check-in and never wavered during our visit. It was evident that everyone who worked at the Hilton President appreciated what they were a part of and strived to make sure every guest also takes a piece of that history home with them.

The Hilton President is so much more than a hotel…it’s truly an experience. If you have the opportunity to visit Kansas City, and I hope you do, know that your stay at the Hilton President Hotel will be more than just a place where you rest your head at the end of the night; it will become one of your favorite destinations while you’re there!

Smallcakes: A Cupcakery Review

IMG 3015 300x225 Smallcakes: A Cupcakery Review
Amidst the latest trend of cupcake shops popping up everywhere, I’d venture to say one stands above the rest when it comes to taste and attitude – Smallcakes: A Cupcakery in Overland Park, KS.

Though they’ve recently been featured on such national tv  programs as “The View” (where Sherri Sheppard & Whoopi Goldberg announced Smallcakes’ Red Velvet Cupcake was the best they’d ever tasted) and “Cupcake Wars” on Food Network, Smallcakes maintains the same sense of family and community that gave them their start.

Owner Jeff Martin used to own a sub shop and would bring cupcakes in for his friends and employees on birthdays and other special occasions – using them as guinea pigs for his new recipes. After enough people convinced him he’d really stumbled upon something special, they opened their storefront in Overland Park, KS last May. Smallcakes (the name comes from a nickname Jeff & his wife gave their daughter, Lily) welcomes you in with their cheerful pink and brown décor.

A smattering of deliciousness: Red Velvet, Birthday Cupcake, Caramel Crunch & Peanut Butter Cup

As regular customers fought over the last pink chocolate cupcakes (ok, maybe fought is a bit over the top, but I could immediately tell is was a crowd favorite!), I feasted my eyes on the dozen other flavors they were featuring that day. Perennial favorites Pink Vanilla & Pink Chocolate are always on the menu and happened to be surrounded that day by Lemon, Birthday Cupcake, Red Velvet, Peanut Butter Cup, Hot Fudge Sundae, The Hostess (looks just like it’s namesake!), S’mores & Caramel Turtle Crunch…just to name a few!

Of course, what kind of blogger would I be if I didn’t sample a few…I knew you’d expect that of me! What I was surprised to find was that the ones I expected to like the least, I actually loved the most! I was not shocked that my kids both wanted to try the Birthday Cupcake, but not being a fan of birthday cake myself, I was reluctant to dive into the whip cream and sprinkles; however, I soon ate my words! Not too sweet, this was the perfect combination of fun and deliciousness (yes, I said deliciousness).

My other favorites were the Lemon and the Caramel Crunch – a delightful chocolate cake with caramel frosting, crumbled chocolate pretzels and sea salt…. I know – sounds weird, right??? But I could NOT stop eating this one! In fact, I think I’m drooling a little as I type this. And at only $3 a cupcake, you don’t have to feel bad about picking out a few and sharing them with some friends icon smile Smallcakes: A Cupcakery Review

What was most endearing about this cupcakery was the attitude within. Mitchell & Sara couldn’t have been kinder and more accommodating. They truly embraced the spirit of the shop – one that appreciates how something so small like a cupcake can bring so much happiness to people. I would venture to say that very attitude is what keeps people rolling in to Smallcakes: at a time in our history when there is so much one could complain about, people can take a break and find small pleasures in the simple things that remind them of their youth! Couple that with the fact that the folks at Smallcakes don’t take themselves too seriously and you have a winning combination!

IMG 3032 300x225 Smallcakes: A Cupcakery Review

Our gracious hosts for the day, Sara & Mitchell (Jeff was actually in Nashville the day we visited!)

If you’re looking to spend even more time at Smallcakes, ask them about their special events, like their “Cupcake & Cocktail” parties or consider them when booking your next birthday party, baby shower or even just a girls’ night out event.

For someone who’s not a cake lover (as well as someone who’s trying to eat healthier!), I couldn’t help but fall in love with this darling shop. There wasn’t too much icing, the cake wasn’t too sweet and the flavors were so inventive and so well blended that we all walked out very happy campers. With locations in Overland Park & Olathe, KS, you’ll definitely want to indulge your sweet tooth at Smallcakes the next time you find yourself in the heart of the Midwest.

Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant:A Review

IMG 3088 300x225 Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant:A Review

In a time when you rarely hear “home-style” and “family business” anymore, Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant in Kansas City proudly embraces both.

When looking for kid-friendly restaurants in the Kansas City area, it’s hard for Fritz’s not to come up. Over 50 years old, Fritz’s combines good, old-fashioned burgers and more at extremely reasonable prices. But what makes Fritz’s so unique is the way they deliver your food…by train!

IMG 3098 300x225 Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant:A Review

You can watch your food made in the kitchen then delivered by train right to your table!

That’s right, owner Fred Kopfz engineered a delivery system where a train actually encircles the top perimeter of the restaurant that then drops your food in a basket directly to your table. Oh, and did I mention that you actually use the phone at your table to call your order in personally? All this was originally designed to help with labor shortages and has developed into a Kansas City tradition with three locations throughout Kansas and Missouri.

Fritz’s continues to be family owned and operated to this day, with even most of the specialties being named after family members based on their tastes and personalities. For instance, one of their most popular offerings that I sampled, the “Gen Dare Twin”, is named after “Genevive” and boasts two hamburger patties topped with crispy hash-browns, grilled onions, mustard, ketchup, lettuce and onion. Though skeptical at first, I quickly discovered why this is one of the most frequently ordered items on their menu.

IMG 3099 300x225 Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant:A Review

Even the exterior of the Shawnee Mission location looks like a train station!

I also loved the “Fring” – an order of French Fries with two onion rings thrown in! (I always want onion rings when I see them on the menu, but can never finish an entire order, so this sampling was right up my alley!). Other unique notables include the chili, the kids hot dog (cut up and served on a round bun), and the old-fashioned milk shakes (our kids recommend the cookies & cream).

IMG 3103 300x225 Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant:A Review

So whether you want to experience a rare piece of Americana, appreciate the spirit of invention, or just want to see your kids squeal with delight, make sure to add one of Fritz’s three locations to your Kansas City itinerary.

Porters Steakhouse Review

porters steakhouse 199x300 Porters Steakhouse ReviewThe history, the flavor and the convenience…just a few reasons we chose to visit Porter’s Steakhouse while in Chattanooga.

Having just re-opened on July 1, Porter’s is Chattanooga’s only Chicago-style steakhouse. Known for their Pepperloin, Porter’s has brought back their classic favorites, like their Asiago Macaroni & Cheese, while introducing seasonal new creations, like fresh watermelon dressing on their arugula salad.

We appreciated the warm decor without the dark, stuffy feeling you often encounter in traditional steakhouses. While some restaurants make you feel like a number, we felt welcomed and appreciated from the moment we walked in. Our server was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, but perhaps what I appreciated the most was that she was attentive without hovering (a rare quality these days).

The manager also checked in with us and even brought out a sample of her favorite dish – the risotto – at the end of our meal because she noticed we hadn’t ordered it. I have to admit, I’ve never been a fan of risotto (in fact I always make fun of it when I watch them make it week after week on Hell’s Kitchen), but this was almost better than dessert! I was so full, but I couldn’t stop eating it!

Ok, so now that you’re salivating, I know you’re dying to find out what we actually feasted on. We started our meal with the Black Mission Goat Cheese Tart drizzled with Aged Balsamic Vinegar. It was the one dish I heard every person in the hotel recommend…and it did not disappoint. We followed that with the fresh Watercress, Arugula & Strawberry Salad; I expected it to be a bit sweeter, but still a nice note in our meal.

For entrees, Alexis chose another Porter’s favorite – the Filet Oscar (my fork may or may not have crossed over to her plate) and I indulged in the Rosemary Colorado Lamb Chops. At first I was disappointed that they did not have my traditional favorite accompagniment, mint jelly, but after one bite I realized I didn’t need it. I cannot tell you the last time I’ve tasted meat with so much flavor!

Though it was hard to narrow down our dessert choices, we finally landed on the Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp (I’m a sucker for anything that ressembles a fruit pie) and the Warm Molten Chocolate Cake with Fresh Berries. Need I say more? Delish.

Let me end by saying that this is not your average hotel restaurant (though I also cannot explain in words how great it was to be able to just walk out of the restaurant, up to our room and fall into our Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed – pure heaven!). Perhaps even better was that we found out you can tweak anything in -house AND order off the Porter’s menu in your room! Boy, would I have been in trouble if I had known that before dining there…

Whether you live in Chattanooga or are just planning a visit, I highly recommend planning your own two day getaway to the Sheraton Read House Hotel and Porters Steakhouse. I promise, you will not be disappointed with the experience.

moz screenshot Girls Chattanooga Getaway Weekend In all my years of marriage, I’ve never managed a girls’ getaway Weekend. But by now you all know how fond I’ve become of Chattanooga as a vacation destination, both for it’s proximity to so many major cities (including Nashville and Atlanta!) as well as it’s fabulous activities.

The stunning Sheraton Read House lobby

So when I was presented with the opportunity to return to the Sheraton Read House Hotel to review the grand re-opening of Porter’s Steakhouse, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to make a girls getaway weekend out of it. So I invited one of my best friends, Alexis, to drive up from Atlanta and meet me for a night out on the town. (Plus she just got a new camera for her birthday so she could take some of these fabulous photos for this post icon smile Girls Chattanooga Getaway Weekend

Of all the downtown Chattanooga hotels, we’ve found a favorite in the Sheraton Read House Hotel. Conveniently located on Broad Street, you get the charming history of Chattanooga mixed with all the best modern conveniences, including access to the best downtown Chattanooga restaurants, events, and cultural icons.

Of course, what girls getaway weekend would be complete without a trip to the spa? After a quick check in to our courtyard-view room at the Read House, we headed over to the day spa & salon that was voted as having one of the top therapeutic massages in Chattanooga in 2009: In the Buff Salon and Day Spa. I’ve traveled around the world and experienced my share of pampering, but this was truly one of the best massages I’ve ever had! (Not to mention how everyone there truly went out of their way to make us feel special).

The location of our relaxation!

As difficult as it was to drive back to the hotel after our afternoon of relaxation, we somehow managed to pull ourselves together and get ready for dinner at the newly renovated Porter’s Steakhouse. Famous for their pepperloin, they are the only Prime Steakhouse in Chattanooga. We had heard multiple rave reviews about the Black Mission Goat Cheese Tart, so we knew we had to start off with that, but I never could have imagined the flavors we were about to experience throughout the rest of the meal! I don’t consider myself a big meat eater, but I indulged in the lamb while Alexis sampled the Filet Oscar…and we couldn’t stop eating off of each others plates in addition to our own. It was truly a memorable meal in a beautiful setting with a fabulous friend.

The new Porter's Steakhouse

It was so great to be able to just walk back to our room after an amazing meal, settle into our Sheraton Sweet Sleeper bed and stay there until late the next morning (well, not exactly late, but anything after 7am for a mom with multiple, small children is considered sleeping in!).

After a quick trip to the Starbucks in the lobby, we headed over to the Chattanooga market, which it turns out they have every Sunday from 11a-4p. A great mix of local farmers, artisans, and food vendors, we got lost in sampling scrumptious cheeses and oogling over some adorably unique kids clothes. I’ll leave you with a few pics of the market to tempt you with… (especially loved the unique threads of Jules for Kids – I can guarantee you’ll be seeing more of her soon!)

Monday's Menu Plan: July 20, 2009

We’re still on the road! After a great birthday spend with friends and family at Disney World, we’re now in south Florida. While our eating schedule is altered a bit, I still wanted to give you all a plan for the week so you have something to work off of. Remember, keep mixing in those fresh summer fruits and veggies while you can still get them (so inexpensively!). Take advantage of items like corn that you can cook once, but eat off of for awhile (cook on the grill for dinner one night, then cut the remaining off the cobb for a fresh salsa or salad the next night and then a chowder the night after that!). Once I’m back in my routine again, I’ll get more recipes posted for those fun summer nights!
