IMAX Chattanooga Kids Review: “10 million times better than I expected!”

20130323 210840 200x300 IMAX Chattanooga Kids Review: 10 million times better than I expected!
It would be one thing for me to tell you how great my first experience at the TN Aquarium’s IMAX theater was, but I thought it would be much more valuable for you to hear my kids’ review of their first IMAX movie.

About halfway through “Born to be Wild 3D”, my 7 year old son leaned over to me and whispered, “Mom, this is 10 million times better than I expected!”

You see, I can’t exactly remember the last time I saw an IMAX movie, but I’m pretty sure it dates back to the last time Michael Jordan & Bugs Bunny partnered together for a full-length film…

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The night before going on our first IMAX adventure, I decided to pump my kids up by showing them the Chattanooga IMAX movie trailers on YouTube. However I have to be honest; after watching the previews, my kids weren’t super excited about going to the IMAX.

Sure, the images were beautiful, but my kids were not instantly compelled to spend 45 minutes in a theater watching pretty pictures of animals.

We didn’t realize just how much those opinions would soon change…

We had three IMAX 3D movie choices:
*Born to Be Wild 3D
*Flight of the Butterflies 3D
*The Last Reef 3D

When our family was first invited to attend an IMAX movie after our day at the Aquarium, “Born to be Wild” came highly recommended. But I really thought my daughter would want to see the “Flight of the Butterflies” because the Butterfly Garden is one of our favorite experiences at the Aquarium’s Ocean Journey. We also thought the images from “The Last Reef” looked stunning, but none of us were compelled enough for that to be in the running.

So it came down to a decision between the first two, but we ultimately decided to go with the original recommendation we got because the story seemed the most interesting and heartwarming.

Born to be Wild 3D” narrated by Academy-Award® winner Morgan Freeman, documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people —saving these endangered species one life at a time.

BTBW POSTER IMAX Chattanooga Kids Review: 10 million times better than I expected!

The IMAX theater itself is something to behold, but once you put on those 3D glasses and the film starts, that’s when we were truly transported, both literally and emotionally.

I may have cried…

I am not your typical animal person: I’m allergic to most house pets, I get annoyed when I see dogs in strollers in stores and I don’t understand when people alter their travel plans for their animals.

Yet this film moved me.

Watching how these women dedicated their lives to rescuing, rehabilitating and returning these animals to their natural habitat was absolutely inspiring. And don’t even get me started on the stunning visual imagery and moving narration provided by Morgan Freeman.

Throughout this IMAX film, my kids kept leaning over to me and saying, “I’m so glad we didn’t go home early” and “I should have listened to you mom – this is better than I ever could have imagined!”.

Here are some closing comments directly from my kids. First, from my 8 year old daughter when asked what she would say to another kid, like her, who wasn’t sure if they wanted to see an IMAX movie:
It’s a lot funner than you think, it’s a huge screen, and Born to be Wild is the best (since that’s the one we saw). It was really, really good. It’s about elephants and orangoutangs. It was a great story about how two ladies who raised elephants and orangoutangs and how they released some into the wild because they were old enough. It was very cute and I loved it.

And from my 7 year old son when asked the same question (as if the “it was a million times better than I expected” comment wasn’t enough):
I didn’t really want to go because I didn’t think it would be so good… but it was really good.

Children under 3 are free at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater in Chattanooga, and if you want to add an IMAX ticket on to your Aquarium ticket, it’s only an extra $6 (Now that’s value!). The theater is about a block away from the Aquarium, so I recommend what we did: get to the Aquarium when it first opens, spend a couple hours there, catch a movie around lunch time, and then you can always return to the aquarium for more fun after the film is done!

Have you ever been to the Chattanooga IMAX 3D theater? If so, what was your favorite film?

Princess Fiona’s Cookie Castle Decorating at Gaylord Opryland

We recently got to experience Princess Fiona’s Cookie Castle Decorating experience Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN. It was actually the first thing we did after checking in for our Summer Fun with Shrek & Friends package and it was the perfect way to start our stay with our DreamWorks friends.

After we were seated in the Water’s Edge Dining Area (the same area where the Shrek Feast is held), a baker’s helper came out with Fiona. Even though she had a wireless mic on, it was hard to understand her, though I think she was setting up a story about how the Fairy Godmother had ordered a bunch of cookie castles and she wanted us to help her make them.

All our daughter cared about was that she got to see Fiona after taking care to braid her hair just like Fiona and put on her Princess Fiona Ogre ears….

Kariss was especially excited to show Fiona the doll she found of her at a consignment sale, and Princess Fiona seemed equally excited to meet her mini-me:

We didn’t waste any time starting in on our cookie castle decorating. We had a choice of white or green castle (we chose green), then were given white frosting and a bunch of candy to decorate with. Considering my lack of decorating skills, the kids were very grateful that daddy made it to Opryland in time to assist with this project:

Our first born dove right into this project:

And while our first-born took painstaking care in choosing what candy to use where in the castle, our second-born took equal care in choosing which candy to eat first icon wink Princess Fionas Cookie Castle Decorating at Gaylord Opryland

OH, and he also found some creative uses for the squeezable frosting that was supposed to be used as our glue:

At the end of the construction process, the kids took part in a very cute ceremony where they each received unique names from the kingdom.

To be honest, I’m not sure if I would have traveled there exclusively for this event alone, but it truly was a great way to kick off our weekend, not to mention a fun activity we all got to participate in together as a family!

In exchange for my honest opinion, our family was provided this experience by Gaylord Opryland. I’d love to hear what you thought of this experience if you’ve taken part in it as well!

Shogun Restaurant Franklin TN Review: Early Bird not worth the Savings

20120719 131105 Shogun Restaurant Franklin TN Review: Early Bird not worth the Savings

If you’re thinking about dining at Shogun Restaurant in Franklin (Brentwood), TN, please read this review first. We recently went to take advantage of their Early Bird savings, but even this frugal girl would much rather have paid full price elsewhere in exchange for better food and a more comfortable experience.

Let me also preface this Shogun review by saying that I was not asked to eat there nor was I asked to write this review. I was purely going to the Shogun Restaurant because the only thing I wanted for my recent birthday was to have a Japanese dinner and learned about their special pricing from 4:30-6:30pm.

Unfortunately, it was a bit of a joke from the beginning. I learned it was a Hibachi grill, but we don’t necessarily like to eat Hibachi exclusively. So when I was told you could order from their regular menu from the Hibachi side too, we sat there so the kids could enjoy the show.

As we sat down, however, we opened the menu to find there were ONLY Hibachi offerings (as well as Sushi). The Hibachi chicken was only $11.95 for dinner, so we just decided to go with it anyway.

When the young waitress arrived, she seemed like she just had been working out and was called in to cover a shift, and was a little bitter about it. There was no smile, her hair was messily pulled back and she wore a very low cut tank top with a fleece jacket over it, with a logo from another establishment! Not to mention, she had a young man shadowing her (I’m guessing, because she never introduced him) who was much more professionally dressed, yet she treated him like a dog. She impolitely corrected him in front of us and it made all of us at the table feel awkward.

On to the food: the soup was literally stone cold, the portions varied greatly from person to person and ultimately we were told they had certain things, waited for them, and then finally were told they didn’t actually carry those items, thus making it a very disjointed meal where it seemed like one of us was always waiting on the other to eat because of the inefficient service.

Overall, the food itself was fair – nothing to throw away, but certainly not something I would be willing to overlook the poor service over in order to return to eat. And certainly not the meal I was hoping to have to celebrate my birthday.

They did sing a lovely traditional Japanese song and bring out some (frozen) cheesecake in honor of my big day, but again, not worth a return trip.

I wanted to share this with you as a perfect case in point: sometimes it isn’t worth “saving” money at a restaurant (or anywhere else for that matter!) if you’re not actually going to enjoy your overall experience. Of course, if you can find a coupon or discount for a place you LOVE, then by all means go for it!

So that being said, does anyone have a Japanese restaurant in Nashville that you actually love?

Aimco Nashville Hillmeade Apartments Bellevue TN Review: Not so Home Sweet Home

20120710 094855 Aimco Nashville Hillmeade Apartments Bellevue TN Review: Not so Home Sweet Home

If you’ve considered looking at Aimco’s Nashville Hillmeade Apartments…DON’T! Let me just save you the heartache right off the bat. Our family lived there for two and a half years and I can tell you one thing: it is not so “Home Sweet Home”.

Just to be clear, I’m talking about Hillmeade Apartments in Bellevue, TN in this not-so glowing review.

It all started out well enough; though the apartments are old, they offered a great value for the amount of space. In fact, they offered a multi-level, townhouse style apartment that seemed perfect for our family. Yet after moving 3 times in 9 months, we only cared about two things: SAFETY & CLEANLINESS (which, by the way, I was VERY clear to share with them from the beginning).

The most appalling of the community’s faults came after the Nashville Flood of 2010, just a few months after we moved in. While our apartment itself didn’t sustain any major damage, one of the handrails on the outside stairs leading down to our apartment disappeared shortly after. It may not seem like such a big deal, and it wouldn’t have been…had it been replaced promptly.

I wish I could list every call, email and inquiry I made about getting the handrail replaced.

I wish I could tell you that they responded promptly…but they didn’t.

I wish I could tell you my then 5 year old son didn’t slip and fall on the ice 7 months after the handrail went missing….but I can’t.

I wish I could tell you that after the fall & injury, the Hillmeade community apologized and immediately rectified the situation.

Nope.

It was a YEAR LATER when I finally contacted someone on the regional level that things started moving. Even then, I was still told blatant lies, ranging in everything from “We need to get approval from someone in an office higher than us” to “it’s been back-ordered”. When it was eventually replaced, it was with a shoddy, rusty handrail that was obviously not new – not that I wanted a new hand rail – but I was told the delay was because we were waiting on a new handrail.

Pathetic.

Oh, and did I mention I didn’t feel comfortable even stepping foot in the Hillmeade apartment office for the last year I lived there?

This was partly due to the community manager entering the apartment un-announced one day with the regional director and never saying a word to me. This was particularly offensive because at that point we had lived there a year and I had never once seen or met the woman. To be honest, I thought she was a ‘ghost manager’ and they just signed her name to the emails to give an air of authority. Not even a “Hi, sorry you’ve been having so much trouble. My name is Lynn and I hate that we have to meet under such circumstances.”

I guess that was too much to ask.

After that episode (did I mention I was still in my pajamas when the Aimco entourage showed up without notice?), I felt violated and belittled. The district manager at the time (who was actually the 2nd I had dealt with and has now moved on as well) pretty much told me he had a hard time believing how I was being treated because his staff was ‘award-winning’.

I realize this is turning into quite the venting session, but let me just mention one more reason I didn’t feel comfortable stepping inside the apartment office: the ‘award-winning’ staff (in particular, the gentleman who leased us our apartment and continues to work there today, despite what I’m about to tell you):
*He told me I was a fool for buying vitamins from a “multi-level pyramid scheme” when I went to pick up a box at the office.

*When I asked about the type of air filters used in the apartments (we were trying to rule out some allergy issues), he said not to worry about is because “they’re the cheapest crap you can get”.

*When friends of ours went to tour the apartments and my girlfriend got there first, he refused to give her information about all the apartment layouts until she picked just one. Once her husband arrived, he said, “I’m glad you’re finally here because I wasn’t getting anywhere with your wife!”. (They didn’t end up living there…surprise, surprise).

*Another friend of ours we met while living there also happened to be an apartment manager. He cornered her when she was in the office and questioned her about her community, asking what kind of money was in it and freely offering that “this was just a temporary job until he could find something better”.

I decided not to subject myself to that kind of treatment anymore after that.

The final straw was when we found a hole in our sub-floor (yes, literally a hole in the concrete under the carpet) and we didn’t receive so much as an apology. When I once again confronted the district manager (the 3rd since we’d lived there), her explanation was, “How could we possibly know there was a hole in the floor when you moved in?”

I documented every grievance we had, tried contacting a variety of employees at a number of levels and every interaction basically went the same way: I’d have a nice conversation, get cautiously optimistic that our issues were being heard, then get pushed on to someone else or simply never get contacted back from that point on.

My only concern in writing this is to make sure another family doesn’t suffer the same fate we did. I even went so far as to warn their national media representative about my concerns and the fact that I was going to write a blog post on our abysmal experience with Hillmeade (since I thought it would be unfair for her to have to deal with the backlash when she wasn’t the one who caused it).

Once again, we had a very nice conversation and she even followed up with me when I didn’t expect it. Yet when I tried to contact her by phone AND email after that to confirm the conditions of our move out, I once again got ignored.

I can’t tell you how worthless it made me feel as a human being.

What’s interesting was that in our folder was a multi-page train of emails (that a Hillmeade employee gave me at move out with our move-out papers) that included phrases like, “…right now it is just more important that we get her moved out without incident.” and “we don’t need any bad press”. I wish they had chosen to have more direct communication with me than each other…

I didn’t enjoy spending countless hours on the phone telling my tale or on the computer documenting their errors and oversights.
I didn’t particularly appreciate the fact that I didn’t feel comfortable in my own home.
And I certainly didn’t enjoy that my family’s safety was put at risk repeatedly, yet when I tried to bring it to someone’s attention, I was made to feel utterly insignificant.

What’s even more interesting was that they obviously liked us and our apartment enough to feature us in their Hillmeade website; when they informally surveyed the maintenance men about which home was always the nicest when they entered, the consensus was ours. We took pride in our home and wished the property managers would have shared just an ounce of that care and concern.

So if you are looking for apartments in Nashville, TN or are considering moving here, please stay far away from Hillmeade apartments. I don’t think I’ve ever used this blog as a place to rant, but I simply couldn’t let anyone else live through the torment that we experienced in our years there.
