Mother’s Day Presents: 3 Tips for Success

mothers day presents 3 tips success Mothers Day Presents: 3 Tips for Success

The perennial question when it comes to Mother’s Day presents seems to always be this: to make homemade or buy?

On the “Family Friendly Morning Show” this week I shared my 3 step to success to make this a happy Mother’s Day for every mom out there. If you follow these three steps to help you select 3 special gifts, you’ll find it hard to go wrong!

Mother’s Day Presents: 3 Steps to Success

1. Sentimental Mother’s Day Present

This is where the homemade comes in to the Mother’s Day present process. Have the kids paint a picture, make a card, form a clay pot…you get the idea. I would say  ’make mom a mix tape’, but then I’d be dating myself, wouldn’t I?

2. Practical Mother’s Day Present

If you’ve been paying attention since Christmas, chances are mom’s mentioned needed a new ‘something’. Whether it’s a new vacuum, sweater, throw pillow or screwdriver, it doesn’t matter – get it for her. Now this is why my 3 step process is so key: if you ONLY buy her this one practical gift, it seems insensitive. But if you present this gift along with something from each of the other two categories, you come off as thoughtful icon wink Mothers Day Presents: 3 Tips for Success Tricky, isn’t it? Oh, the female brain…

3. Wish-List Mother’s Day present

Now this one is a little trickier, especially if you’re on a budget. The wish-list can closely resemble something she’s mentioned that falls under the practical category OR it can be something she mentions often that never gets fulfilled – we’re talking something as simple as flowers up to an extravagant trip or piece of jewelry. Again, the idea here is to do something out of the ordinary that communicates to mom that you appreciate who she is, what she does and what she dreams about.

How to Help Kids Handle Hurt

How to Help Kids Handle HurtOne of the toughest jobs I face as a parent is how to help my kids handle hurt. I don’t care whether or not the hurt is physical or emotional (and I know there will be a TON of both of the course of my children’s lives), it breaks my heart as a mom!

Sometimes in an effort to be “SuperParent”, we miss out on being what our kids really need, the parent they’ve always known and loved. In times of hurting, kids don’t want different, they want what they already know. The more you can focus on reminding them of what they know is true, the more they will understand that tragedy is a part of life and they too can triumph over the pain.

In addition to the hurts our kids experience first-hand, there are a slew of others that they will be a by-product of: from things that will literally shatter their world like divorce & family death to learning about the ills of this earth, such as natural disasters and child poverty.

In the nine years I’ve been a parent, we’ve been through our fair share of disasters, both of the child-sized variety and the actual earth-shaking variety. If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that my adult-brain rationale is not very comforting to a hurting child.

So I’ve come up with a list of my top three pieces of advice I’ve complied, both from experts and personal experience, to help your kids when they’re hurting. You can read them over on Vanderbilt’s Wishing Well blog

7 Tips for Cheap Easter Baskets: Talk of the Town March 2013

cheap easter basket tips 7 Tips for Cheap Easter Baskets: Talk of the Town March 2013
pin it button 7 Tips for Cheap Easter Baskets: Talk of the Town March 2013

If you caught my segment on Talk of the Town on March 26, 2013, then you heard me give my top 7 tips for creating cheap, yet meaningful, Easter baskets that you’ll be proud to present to your family!

In case you missed my Easter Basket TV segment, I’ve broken down my tips for you here:

20130326 173258 7 Tips for Cheap Easter Baskets: Talk of the Town March 2013

1. Use a Homemade Easter Basket
-Have fun making an Easter basket with your kids or even covering up whatever bucket they used for Halloween with paper they’ve colored. Look around your house for plastic beach buckets, tin pails, even old Build A Bear boxes!

2. Invest in an Heirloom Easter Basket
-Even before our first child was born, my husband had a certain type of Easter basket he envisioned for our kids: white wicker with gingham basket liners. So before our firstborn could hold a basket, she already owned said trinket with her name embroidered on it from Pottery Barn Kids. When #2 came along, it wasn’t before we ordered his in green gingham. It might not be as cheap as making your own, but if it’s something you’ll keep and re-use year to year (as we have for the past 8 years), the cost definitely evens out.

3. Re-Use Raw Materials from Year to Year
-You can’t tell me it’s that hard to throw all those plastic eggs and Easter grass in the same box you keep your Easter baskets and other seasonal decorations. Nothing pains me more than watching people pay out their nose for those plastic eggs in March only to realize they’ll be 25 cents in a couple weeks and that it would have been so easy for them to save for next year!

4. Decorate Your Own Easter Eggs (both real & plastic!)
-For most kids, the egg hunt is more highly anticipated than the actual eggs themselves. Take the eggs mentioned in tip #3 along with some paint pens and let your kids have at it! For the hunt, you can add a coin to each or even a Bible verse on a small strip of paper if you want to have something inside them. Or just skip the plastic eggs altogether and dye your own hard-boiled eggs…but if you do go that route, make sure you don’t forget where in the house you hide them! (Or better yet, opt for an outdoor egg hunt icon wink 7 Tips for Cheap Easter Baskets: Talk of the Town March 2013

5. More is not Always Better
-When you consider all the candy and tchotchkes (which is essentially a Yiddish term for ‘junk’) kids will be receiving from school, relatives and community events, the burden is truly off of us as parents to be the sole source of Easter Basket wonder. If your kids are used to getting presents in their Easter baskets, try to opt for one ‘meaningful’ gift instead of a bunch of trinkets that will be easily forgotten about.

20130326 173310 7 Tips for Cheap Easter Baskets: Talk of the Town March 2013

6. If you’re going to give candy, go for the good stuff you know they’ll love
-Skip the generic, pastel foil wrapped solid mini chocolate eggs. They’ll just end up melted in your car’s backseat floor mat. If you’re going to buy your kids Easter candy, go with something you know they’ll love (or at least something you’ll love since they’ll most likely be sugared out before they even get to Easter morning!). I’m very partial to Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs – I’d argue that they are the best candy of ALL time…not just amongst its Easter candy cohorts.

7. Look around you
-We’ve learned that our kids are just as excited to receive ‘momentos’ from us or small objects we, as their loving parents, assign meaning to just as much (if not more) than another dollar store stuffed animal that will just end up in a garbage bag during your next move.

A Working Mom on the Go with a Hectic Schedule: How to Keep a Clear Head

0 93887 634947033454127885 A Working Mom on the Go with a Hectic Schedule: How to Keep a Clear Head

As a working mom on the go, it’s tough to keep a clear head!

So when Mucinex® approached me about tips to keeping a clear head while balancing my hectic schedule, I happily accepted the opportunity.

After all, I’m always getting asked how I do what I do.

To be honest, I don’t think there’s a magic answer.

I’m passionate.

I’m driven.

I don’t sit still well.

But that being said, there are a few things that need to happen for this well-oiled machine to keep running day to day regular smile A Working Mom on the Go with a Hectic Schedule: How to Keep a Clear Head.

Seriously though, life is tough…especially if you’re a wife, mom, employee, care-taker (the list could go on). So here’s what you have to do:

1. Find a system that works for you
Whether it’s a time-management app on your phone, taking a timer with you into every room so you stay on task, or taking one day a week to unplug from technology, it’s important to assess your needs in light of your personality.

I like a combination of online calendars with notebooks I can write in to stay on task. I keep a running to-do list, so there’s never a moment I don’t have something to do.

2. Know when to unplug
I alluded to this in the previous tip and I mean it: It’s important to set aside time to unplug: literally.

This has been a hard one for me to learn, but we only have one shot at this life. While I enjoy working hard, I also want my family to recognize my face and not just the back of my head staring at the computer. Think to yourself, “If I lost my family tomorrow, would what I’m doing right now be worthwhile?” Scary thought, right? Our family recently had a life-changing, near-death experience and it brought this point to life in a very real way.

3. Only say yes to what you’re passionate about.
Once you eliminate the ‘good’ things in your life and focus on only doing what is ‘great’, you’ll find you’ll have a clearer vision laid out before you. Make sure to include your family in these conversations too. It’s important for them to know why you’re doing what you’re doing and then you have a better chance of not only receiving the support you need, but also actually completing the project at hand!

Keep in mind, I haven’t perfected any of these; it’s a day by day process. In case you thought I had my stuff together, check this out:

Moe’s Catering: 4 Time & Money Saving Tips!

20121228 065326 Moes Catering: 4 Time & Money Saving Tips!

Although we moved into our house almost 6 months ago, it fell right in between the end of school and finding out about my father-in-law’s brain tumor.

Needless to say, we were not in the party mood at the time.

Fast forward to this month, and we realized we were finally ready to welcome people in to see our new place, so we decided to have a housewarming/Christmas party all at once.

Yes, we love to entertain, but there is a key point I have learned: when my husband is in charge of all the food, he doesn’t have fun and his own party. Since I wanted this to be an especially fun night for him after all he has been through this past year, I desperately wanted to offer our guests something that was fun & delicious to eat yet easy to serve during the event.

It didn’t take long for us to realize the festivities should actually be at ‘fiesta’ and that we wanted Moe’s to be there too!

While catering from most places can quickly get expensive, there were a few things that we loved about the catering offerings from Moes:
1. Ready to Go!
You have the option to either have food pre-made for you by Moe’s if you’re in a time crunch, or they can bring a anything to you and set it up just like they would in their restaurant.

Since we knew a lot of kids a be coming, we went for the taco bar so that people could customize their food the way they wanted.
Tip: Don’t order food for exactly according to the number of people coming; instead, supplement a bit with chips/salsa… See number two below.

20121228 065334 Moes Catering: 4 Time & Money Saving Tips!

2. Chips, Salsa and Queso!
Yep. You know it. Isn’t this the reason we all truly love Moe’s?

I’ve always appreciated the fact that Moe’s is one of the few places that offers free chips and salsa with your meal. While these items are not free with catering, they are extremely inexpensive, and can make up for some of the food that you don’t have to order in number one above.

As an example, many of us love making taco salad, so the chips went further than the actual makings for the tacos.

Tip: Ask for a variety of salsas. They will stretch and you can make a large crowd happy with very little effort.

3. Moe’s provides everything!
From the warming racks and heating elements, to the plates, utensils and napkins, Moe’s thinks of everything. They will even set it up completely and there is no need to return anything at all to the store. For me, that is one of the biggest drawbacks of hosting a party is the setup and cleanup, and with Moe’s catering, they take all the hassle out of it for you.

Tip: Think of the money you save just on plates, napkins & cutlery alone since Moe’s brings all of that too!

4. Who doesn’t love Mexican food?
Well, I’m sure there are some of the crazy people out there who don’t, but as a rule, it is a universally loved food that is easily customizable. We even added on some of our favorite toppings like cilantro and jalapenos to our taco bar.

Tip: Once again, supplement with add-ons that cost less than the meat itself, or just opt for one protein like we did, instead of two, to save even more!

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Michelle Hussung, the Director of Catering for Moe’s Southwest Grill six Middle Tennessee Locations. She made the process so easy all the way from talking me through the ordering process to ensuring everything was properly set up the day of the event. It’s that level of service we’ve come to expect from Moe’s and they didn’t disappoint…even when in our home!

The word “Catering” has been a buzz word for “expensive” for me in the past, but no more! I now know that Moe’s can actually bring me food (that’s already prepared and ready to eat!) for just as good of a deal, if not better, than if I bought it myself (not to mention the time saved in the kitchen before and after my party).

Thanks, Moe’s, for making our party a low-stress success!

Have you ever catered an event for less than if you had done it yourself?

Disclosure: The catering for our event was provided for us as part of my participation in their Moe’s Blogger Advisory Council this year. It was my pleasure to not only take part in this group, but to share in more detail why Moe’s is one of our favorite places to eat as a family!

How to Save on Fall Makeup

20121019 085908 How to Save on Fall Makeup

If you’re looking for ways to save on that Fall makeup transition so many of us love to make, look no further! Below are the best Frugal Fall Makeup Tips I shared on Talk of the Town today.

1. Don’t overlook the drug stores! The brands they carry have come a long way in the past few years, but don’t forget to do your research first: use beauty lists from Glamour or InStyle, which always include drugstore finds, to discover “Editor’s Picks” and “Consumer Top Buys”. Even better – most drugstores have great return policies. For example, CVS will allow you to return any product within 60 days with a receipt for a full refund.

2. Don’t skimp on a good set of brushes…but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money. My favorite inexpensive brushes are from makeup artist Sonia Kashuk at Target. You can find individual brushes for as little as $3, but they have a great Essential Brush Kit for only $25!

3. You can look like a celebrity for less these days! Mass retailers have partnered with makeup professionals and celebrities to create high-end lines at affordable prices. CVS has the Nuance Line by Salma Hayek and Target has the Jemma Kidd line – both give department store quality products at drugstore prices.

4. Just because you’re saving money doesn’t mean you have to forsake your favorite department store brands… just wait to buy your favorite items until the have their “Bonus Buy Event”. Usually if you spend $35 – 40, you’ll receive a bag of full-size goodies. And if you have heard about a specific department store item, ask the makeup counter if they have a FREE sample for you to try.

5. Not wanting to take the plunge to drugstore brands but don’t have the budget for department store brands? Check out sample box programs like GLOSSYBOX How to Save on Fall Makeup that let you try those brands before you buy them! You’ll get between five and seven large size samples of department store brands delivered to your mailbox for around $20.00 a month.

Home Air Duct Cleaning Tips

So by now you know that the primary goal to prepare our new home before moving in was to get rid of the strong tobacco smell. To best do that, we decided on the following 3 things (in this order):
1. New Paint
2. Remove old carpet and replace with new carpet
3. Clean the Air Ducts

We got great referrals for the first two (Scott from Pro-Home Solutions for the paint & Lowes in Dickson for the carpet/install), but I was on my own for the air-duct cleaning.

I started with the usual techniques: Google searches and ads from the Val-Pak home mailer. I made a couple calls and got the standard quotes, but still felt confused about what exactly I should be looking for and what questions I should be asking.

Then I happened upon Mr. B’s Air Ducts. As the “Frugal Mom” on NewsChannel5 here in Nashville, I had remembered that he had been a featured business on the station before because of his positive reputation (an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau).

When I called and spoke to Mr. B himself (aka Warren – yes, he really does answer his own phones after all these years in business!), what impressed me most was that he seemed more concerned about educating me to make sure I asked the right questions about having my air ducts clean than he was about making me his customer.

He proceeded to tell me two things in particular that set him & his company apart in my mind:
1. This is ALL he does – they’re not there to clean windows, sweep chimneys, etc, they specialize in cleaning air ducts. Plus his employees are exactly that – his employees (not contract laborers). In his own words, “I personally do not believe anybody in this industry will out clean me…People can out-price me, but they can’t out-clean me.” (Though his price was still much lower then many of his competitors!)

2. His cleaning technique – there are many people in industry that strictly do “vent line cleaning”; they offer a low price to get in the door, but all they do is vacuum the lines and spray chemical into the air returns.

Here’s what happens when Mr. B’s comes to your house:
They go under your house, cut an access hole into the trunk line (main artery) and then attach a HEPA vacuum system. They then come back to each line in house, brush it and air sweep it straight to trunk line so as not to bring any debris back into breathing atmosphere.

Once every vent is brushed/swept to trunk line, they go back into crawl space/basement and the clean trunk line all the way back to HEPA vacuum with brushes & air sweeps.

Last but not least, they literally look inside the line to make sure they got everything out of it. It’s then sealed back up with sheet metal, zip screws and foil tape and then they clean the return line out the same way.

3. Ok, I know I said two things, but this was what really sealed the deal for me: They use no chemicals in the house whatsoever. Everything they do is all natural. Warren told me, “We want you and your family to breathe a fresher air in your house, not a chemically induced air”.

When I asked if this was typical in his industry, he said, “most use a product and call it ‘sanitizing’. They will tell you it gets rid of mold and mildew. If they do, you need to find out what’s the root issues going on and not simply put chemicals in your breathing environment. If you were to actually have mold, that equals a moisture problem and needs to be addressed on its own”.

I didn’t hire him on the spot; though I probably should have. I made other calls and no-one could educate me or answer my questions the way Warren did. When I did call back to hire his company, I asked if he could further educate me so that I could share this valuable information with all of you!

Most air-duct cleaning companies will ask you how many floors your house is, how many vents & returns you have, as well as how many square feet there are, here are the questions you should ask them:
*”What kind of equipment do you use?” <You’ll hear something like brushes & air sweeps (like Mr. B’s) or a roto-brush, for example (which is a glorified shop-vac with a 2 inch vacuum hose and can only reach branch lines).

* “Do you clean vent lines or air ducts?” <It’s important to understand the difference between vent line cleaning & air duct cleaning
* “Are you going to use any chemicals in my home?”
* “Are there any fees beyond the quoted price?”

>With Mr. B’s, when you’re quoted a price, that’s exactly what it is. No-one’s going to try to change it. You can also rest assured that all workmanship is guaranteed 100% satisfaction…plus most houses will be good for 5-7 years in normal living conditions.

Oh yeah – do you want to see what they found in my air-ducts?

Those filters started out light green!

Now I know why it smelled like smoke…they actually found a pack of cigarettes in the air-ducts ( in addition to a lot else, as you can see from the pictures above).

I was appalled, to say the least.

So if you suffer from allergies, have funky smells in your home, have moved into a new home like my family, or simply want to create a healthier breathing environment for your family, I would consider looking in to having your air ducts cleaned. Just make sure to follow our guidelines above to ensure that you bring the best person for the job into your home!
