unorthodox easter story An Unorthodox Easter Story : Tommy Nelson March Blog

Today you can find me over at the Tommy Nelson blog with a bit of an Un-Orthodox Easter story.

Growing up, I really didn’t give religion much of a chance…let alone a relationship with Christ.

As an only child who grew up with parents of different religions (a Jewish father and an Anglican mother from England – neither of whom regularly practiced their faith, mind you…), you could say I was a bit confused.

Take it from someone who came to know Christ later in life, Easter represents a time when people are seeking to know more about Jesus…or at least are much more open to hearing about Him because of the way the world celebrates. This fact alone makes the road easier to invite others to listen to your Christ story.

And that’s all you need to share with people who ask: your storyRead the rest of my post over on TommyNelson.com

But before you jump over to the Tommy Nelson blog to read a little more about my un-Orthodox Easter story, why not enter to win one of my newest, favorite Tommy Nelson books: Sheila Walsh’s “Shine Your Light” devotional.

If you love Gigi, God’s Little Princess (which I just heard even Suri Cruise is a HUGE fan of…to the point that she’s asked people to start calling her Gigi!), then you will really fall in love with Gabby, God’s Little Angel.

One thing all kids can appreciate is the comfort of knowing angels watch over them, but Gabby makes being an angel even more relatable to the minds of our little ones. Plus, what little girl wouldn’t love this sparkly title?! (If you can’t wait to see if you’ve won, then you can save 20% off this title at ThomasNelson.com when you use code SAMI20).

What you may not know…

I’ve loved writing all my life, but you may not know that my passion for learning started very early on. In fact, I used to be known as “Doogie Howser” (those of you over the age of 30 will understand that reference icon wink What you may not know...

I earned that moniker because I started public school at the age of 6…but I started in the 3rd grade. I skipped K-2nd grade because I had a 9th grade reading level, in addition to already knowing multiplication, division, cursive and a variety of other subjects beyond my age. Thus began my propensity for over-achievement and trying new things! (If you want to learn even more about me, you can read the beginning of “My Story“).

Throughout my life, I’ve always enjoyed blazing a slightly different trail than everyone else. Even when I wasn’t sure of what was to come, I started with what I did know to be true. Case in point:

Before I really knew what I was getting into when I started blogging, I knew that Go Daddy was the place to go to grab my domain for the best price.

That was years ago, yet I still turn to Go Daddy every time I have a new web idea pop into my head (which is probably more often then it should be!) icon wink What you may not know...

Though I originally discovered Go Daddy for the value, I stayed with them for the customer service. The first time I had a question, I was shocked to discover that not only did I get to talk to a real person who I could actually understand, but they were willing to help me solve my website issues even though it wasn’t a problem that stemmed from their servers.

Turns out I wasn’t the only one who thought so. Did you know that their customer care center is award-winning and available to help online 24-7-365? Go Daddy’s staff is renowned for their tech-savvy, experience and professionalism…all of which I’ve experienced first-hand.

As the web’s largest domain name and hosting provider, they make it easy for anyone to get online with do-it-yourself website builders, Web hosting and more.

There’s a lot you don’t know about Go Daddy, including all the tools they have for bloggers. Check out www.godaddy.com to learn more.

I shared a little known fact about myself, so now it’s your turn! Join the conversation for your chance to win 3 year Unlimited 4GH Hosting from Go Daddy!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Go Daddy. The opinions and text are all mine.

Do You Lack Margin?

Do you lack margin?

No, not notebook paper, though that’s a good imagery example. Think of the blank space that surrounds the text of a book or the lines of the afore-mentioned paper….that area is referred to as the margin.

Do you have that same space in your life? Or do you find yourself constantly running late, barely making appointments or running errands right before the stores close?

I’m ashamed to say I’ve lived my life with very little margin. Always hoping to squeeze in one more activity, conversation or task, I leave little room for error, much less a spare deep breath.

It’s this topic that inspired my latest vlog:

If you’re looking for even more guidance in this area, you can read my review of the book Margin, by Richard Swenson, or buy Margin from Amazon.com. (Obviously, I still need to work on applying the principles I read!)

How do you add margin to your life? Do you struggle with this as much as I do?

Kevin Mawae Testimony

When I heard our pastor tell us that we were going to watch a tape of an ex-NFL player’s personal testimony for our message today, I chuckled to myself. I figured they just wanted to phone in the Thanksgiving Sunday service because everyone was too stuffed or tired at the end of this holiday weekend to get up and preach.

Boy was I wrong.

Kevin Mawae just retired from the Tennessee Titans this year and now attends Crosspoint Church and coaches at Vanderbilt University. Though I never reached the level of professional sports that Kevin did, I related to him on so many levels, especially as an athlete and someone who did not grow up in the church.

I recently came across a quote from Oscar Wilde that truly summed up why I blog:
The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. it is never of any use to oneself.”
I didn’t plan on taking notes, but found myself continuing to write quote after quote. I thought he said too many good things to keep to myself, so I wanted to share them with you in hopes that it might encourage you wherever you may find yourself on this journey of life today:

(Everything below taken from Kevin Mawae’s testimony given via video at Crosspoint Church on 11/28/10)

Joy is a lifestyle.
You have to ask yourself, “What’s important, where are your priorities & what defines you?”

When asked about how he was able to retire from the NFL with such piece:
At the end of the day, guys who can’t walk away (from the NFL) are afraid of what’s ahead or don’t know how they are…I know who I am – I know my identity & what defines me.

Understanding Your Purpose -God has a purpose for everybody.
Kevin was told by the pastor who married him after his brother was killed in a car crash: “You don’t lack the knowledge of who Christ is, you lack the knowledge of what he can do in your life.”

Share Your Story
God can change the lives of thousands through one person.

Everyone thinks you gotta get good before you get Christ, but the reality is you can’t get good without him.
If I was perfect, Christ wouldn’t have needed to die. God doesn’t expect perfection; He expects forgiveness. He wants you to bring whatever you have to Him.

When asked about being a godly husband:
*Get in the Word – critical for being a servant leader
—you can’t be a godly spouse without knowing who God is!
*Be accountable

When asked how his life changed once he accepted Christ in the mid-’90s:
A 180 degree turn doesn’t happen overnight just because you accept Christ.
-It’s not like a Ferrari that turns on a dime. It’s more like a cruise liner that takes three miles to turn.
God doesn’t want you do it on your own; He’ll make that turn for you.

At the end of the day, it’s about leaving a legacy.

Thanks, Kevin, for sharing your testimony so transparently today! I love the life-changing power of a single person’s story!

My Story

This weekend I attended the Relevant Conference in PA and came away with two very important points I personally needed to be reminded of and take action on:

  1. Submit to God’s plan for both my life and my blog
  2. Share my story

As I met new people at almost every meal and workshop, part of my story would unfold amidst the conversations. I quickly realized that the story of my life, whether interesting or not by anyone’s definition, needed to be shared. And not so much because of the places I’ve traveled to or because of the things I’ve accomplished, but because my story may help others write their story.

You see, I’ve always been passionate about mentoring and passing on what’s been passed to me, but I’ve been remiss about sharing on this site some of the very personal and tangible ways God has both blessed me as well as held me in those moments I’d rather forget.

So as the sun rises here in Harrisburg, won’t you indulge me in allowing me a few moments to share a bit about myself? Moving forward, I promise to unpack some of these tidbits a little further and actually reveal what I’ve learned about God and myself as a result of each of these experiences. I hope too that you will find the strength to share your own story, perhaps even on this site in the days and weeks to come.  But for now, let me open my life up to you with some (little known) facts:

*I was born Samara J’aime Strauss in Chicago some 35 years ago. Samara means “guarded by God” in Hebrew and J’aime is literally “I love” in French. My father is a first-generation, Jewish American whose parents hail from Eastern Europe & the Ukraine; my mother is a native of England. This was my father’s second marriage, he was 49 when I was born and my parents are 20 years apart. I am an only child (though I have 3 older half-brothers) and my parents divorced when I was seven.

*I skipped K-2nd grade and entered public school as a third grader when I was six.

*I competed in a variety of sports growing up, but eventually decided to focus on tennis, where I competed in high school (as a very short first singles player) and college (at Emory) and eventually became a professional for some time, which afforded me the opportunity to work for Club Med and travel/live in the Baja of Mexico and Paradise Island, Bahamas until a back injury took me to Florida.

*I have a passion for performing – singing, dancing…you name it! I just found out the show “Glee” was patterned after my high school show choir, New Directions (though I don’t see myself in any of the characters) I founded and coached a collegiate dance team during my time as a professor at Northwood University in Florida (go Blue Storm!) and love to encourage others to let loose on the dance floor, even if just at weddings and conferences J

*I earned my BA in Education & French from Emory University in Atlanta then went on to earn my MA in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (so what if my main motivation for going there was because Michael Jordan did too? Don’t judge me.) I started on my doctorate just before getting married, but that quickly came to a hold after my first daughter was born.

*After moving to Florida, I worked at the MLB Spring Training home of the St. Louis Cardinals and the (then) Montreal Expos. Being a Cubs fan, the former was difficult for me to work with, but loved the underdog Expos where my ability to speak French especially came in handy.

*During my time at Roger Dean Stadium is when I came to truly know the Lord…which led me on a Missions trip to Mexico in 2000 where I would ultimately meet my sister-in-law (though I wouldn’t meet her brother/my husband until two years later) and leave my job at the stadium to become the Director of Cultural Arts/adjunct professor at Northwood for five years.

*Once told I was going to die because of an unknown disease during my collegiate years, I would eventually be diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue syndrome in the late ‘90s. After two years of suffering, I found a specialist who helped transform my health naturally and three months later I competed in the Ms. North Carolina USA pageant (a step up from having won “Young Woman of the Year” in Chicago when I was 15!)

*Because of my illness, I was told I’d never be able to conceive a child much less carry one to full term. Once again, I surprised the medical community and now have two beautiful children who were born within 19 months of each other.

*My husband and I have a passion for mentoring newly married couples. As we’ve both been products of marriages that have ended in divorce, we recognize the dire need for support, accountability and transparent communication when it comes to thriving within a marriage relationship. We don’t necessarily know the right answers, but we’re happy to share what we’re doing in an effort to help others grow in their relationship with each other and God.

*After four moves in a 12 month period, we are finally happy residents of Nashville! Through my blogging and writing, I’ve also been afforded the opportunity to become the “Frugal Mom” on NewsChannel5’s “Talk of the Town” where I get to share my tips with others on how to maximize their life and focus on sharing experiences rather than gathering more stuff.

Again, I share this not to boast or draw attention to myself, but to encourage you to share your own story and give you a transparent look into mine. I’ve learned MANY lessons along the way and look forward to sharing them with you over the coming days, weeks and months as long as you promise keep an open-mind and be willing to also turn the magnifying glass around into your own life and find the purpose God has for you.

While we may not always understand in the moment why we must walk through the path God has us on, we can trust that He will always walk alongside us. I challenge you not just to look down at your own footprints, but to look ahead at others who may be trying to pave the way for you as well as those who may be following you. When you pursue your life with passion, your life will be filled with purpose.

Until next time,
