Top 10 Back to School Shopping Money Saving Tips 2012

I have so many back to school savings that I still want to share with you and since school starts for so many kids this week, I thought I’d share my top 10 back to school money saving tips for 2012 in one post here!

Whether you’re looking for the 2012 Tax Free Days or one of the many teacher discount events, I’ve got the top 10 tips I’ve come up with in my years of back to school shopping just for you:

Back to School Bargains

1. Office Supply Store Extreme Deals: all the office supply stores (like Staples, Office Max & Office Depot) will be competing for your business in the coming weeks by offering a lot of freebies and penny deals, so you’ll want to stock up! Here are just a few things to keep in mind:
-Sign up for their free store rewards cards
-Teachers get a special rewards card and often get extra items beyond the limit (for example, 25 instead of 2 per customer at Staples)
-Be careful of extra purchase requirements – some may say “free”, but will require a minimum purchase or it will only be free after rewards from that store. Calculate the final cost before purchase!

2. Consider Investing in a Lifetime Guarantee
-While this may not seem like such a deal up front, knowing that you can spend money on a backpack now and never have to replace it is a smart buy! Places like Lands End & L.L.Bean offer exactly that.

3. Look for Added Value
-For example, Toys R Us is offering a free lunch bag with backpack purchase.

4. Shop all year long
-I know this doesn’t help you now, but be looking for deals on school supplies all throughout the year. Items you know you’ll need (like glue, pens, folders, markers, etc) will go on clearance several times throughout the year, so stock up when you can.

5. Teacher Appreciation Events
-Several retailers (like Banana Republic & Ann Taylor Loft) offer special teacher discounts or Rewards Cards (like mentioned above) ALL the time. Some will even hold teacher appreciation events before school starts (especially office supply stores…many of which will be this coming first weekend of August), so it never hurts to ask at your favorite store!

6. Mayor’s First Day Festival Transitions…
-in Nashville, The Mayor’s First Day festival transitions to the inaugural First Choice Festival, which is also free,  and will take place Oct. 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at McGavock High School, 3150 McGavock Pike. Representatives from all public schools will be invited to share information about their programs and unique features in order to help families make informed decisions.

7. Tax Free Weekend
-TN Tax Free Weekend is this weekend: August 3-5, 2012. That means that clothing and school supply purchases $100 or less, as well as computers $1500 or less are all tax free!

8. Shop Consignment Sales for School Uniforms & Sports Gear
-Search consignment sales before school starts, especially for uniform essentials, shoes and sports gear
-WeeWares is a consignment sale going on this week, August 2-5, at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, with most items going half price on the 7th. (plus you’ll be helping out our family – we’re consigning there too!)

9. Donate
-With all these deals going on, please consider picking up extra supplies and donating them to a local school, shelter or ministry. There are also a lot of back-to-school drop offs going on right now that would love the extra help!

10. Ask Other Parents for Hand Me Downs
-Whether it’s passing down a textbook or uniforms that are now too small, one of the best places to get your school necessities at a steal are by asking other parents at your school! Many schools now even have their own Facebook page or private website where you can look for such things.

Last thing to consider: spend time comparing prices online before wasting gas driving around from store to store.
Better yet, shop online through sites like Ebates & Savings.com to get cash back on your purchases and take advantage of special coupon codes!

Free Walt Disney World Vacation: No Park Ticket Needed!

IMG 1863 300x225 Free Walt Disney World Vacation: No Park Ticket Needed!
People are always coming to me and asking how to get a free Disney World vacation. After living in Florida for 9 years, we learned a thing or two about Disney vacations and now we love passing that information on to our friends!

The best thing is that there are a lot of great FREE activities around the Walt Disney World Resort that make you feel like you’ve experienced Disney without ever stepping foot in the theme parks! You’ll also want to be sure to check out all my other Disney Deals & Reviews before heading to the happiest place on earth so you’ll maximize your time and money while you’re there.

Disney World Hotels

While it’s not FREE, staying at a Disney World hotel is magical any way you look at it (and there is FREE transportation around the resort if you stay on any property – this includes buses, boats and of course, the monorail!). I can’t tell you how many times we’ve driven through Florida and all we did was stay at the Pop Century for a night and visit Downtown Disney…and that’s still a great Disney vacation in their eyes!

Here are just a few of our FREE Disney favorites:

1. Downtown Disney

    1. As I just mentioned, DOWNTOWN DISNEY is a great way to see all things Mickey without spending a dime (that is, if you can get out of there without spending any money at the numerous shops and restaurants!). They have fountains for the kids to run in, a LEGO playland and play stations, a toy store complete with Mr. Potato Head and My Little Pony play stations, and so much more!

2. Disney Vacation Club

    1. Of course the club itself isn’t free (Disney’s version of time share), but learning about it is. They transport you to their sales center, have a FREE Kids Clubhouse for your kids to play in (professionally supervised) while you’re there, offer you FREE refreshments in air conditioning (this alone is worth the trip after a hot day in Orlando!), and take you for a FREE Ice Cream Sundae in the Ice Cream Parlor before taking your picture and giving you a FREE copy before leaving! This presentation lasts about an hour an did I mention you also walk away with a $15 Gift Card for every person in attendance? That’s right! Even the kids got one! So for an hour’s worth of time, we walked away with $60 – we’re going to Chef Mickey’s tomorrow!

3. Character Dining

    1. Again, this isn’t necessarily a freebie, but there are a lot of great character dining experiences around Disney World, many of which are in the hotels, which means you don’t have to pay for a park ticket to partake! As most of you with little ones know, all they really care about at Disney is seeing the characters, so one of my favorite tips to tell people is to book a character breakfast; it’s the least expensive meal and you have all the characters come to YOU at your table instead of waiting hours in lines with sweaty people inside the theme park. Trust me, it’s worth it.
Now that we did our Vacation Club experience, we have money to go to Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary Resort in the morning and meet the Fab 5 (Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, Goofy) for FREE!

4. Fireworks

    1. Disney is known for its great fireworks spectacles and luckily, they can be seen from many locations as well. For instance, we just stood on the balcony outside of our room on the 4th floor of the Pop Century resort and watched fireworks from BOTH the Magic Kingdom and Epcot simultaneously! And we didn’t have to fight the crowds getting out of the parks and onto the buses when the show was all done icon wink Free Walt Disney World Vacation: No Park Ticket Needed! The Boardwalk/Beach Club hotel area is also a great spot for viewing Epcot’s nightly display and poolside at The Grand Floridian is a lovely spot to catch the Magic Kingdom’s show.

5. Boardwalk/Beach Club

Just as it sounds, the Boardwalk hotel area is a lively place to walk around, shop and watch street performers and other families enjoying their vacation. Just around the corner at the Beach Club they have a nightly bonfire on the beach where you can roast smores and catch a FREE Disney movie under the stars!

6. Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground

This is a hidden jewel on the grounds. You can take a bus or a boat (from outside the Magic Kingdom) to the campgrounds where they not only have the famous “Hoop Dee Doo Musical Review” and one of our favorite restaurants, Trail’s End, but they also have a FREE petting zoo, great playground and beach volleyball courts.

Our new favorite freebie is Chip & Dale’s Campfire – a must see where you can meet the famous twosome, enjoy live music and even watch a Disney movie outside under the stars!

7. Animal Kingdom Lodge

When this hotel first opened, it was one of our favorite places to stay because no-one knew about it and it was SO reasonable for a “luxury” class hotel at Disney. They feature a 33-acre wildlife preserve that boasts over 30 species of wildlife that roam amidst 3 lush, tropical savannas. You can observe exotic animals from special viewing areas throughout the Resort as well as from the balconies of select Guest rooms. They also have great children’s activities all day, such as chalk rubbings in the lobby and stories by the fire pit outside. While it’s way out of our price range now, it is one of the most unique places we’ve ever experienced.

8. Pools & Playgrounds

Every Disney resort has at least one pool, and many boast three or more. They all are themed according to the hotel and most also offer fun fountains or water slides. The pool at the Beach/Yacht Club alone could be it’s own waterpark! Each resort also has fun playgrounds for the kids, as well as daily activities (the Pop Century featured a kids musical parade through the dining hall tonight that anyone could be a part of!)

Monthly Savings on Household Items: Talk of the Town Video August 30

Watch the Talk of the Town video from the August 30th show: Monthly Savings on Household Bills

Are you joining me after seeing my segment on Talk of the Town today?  Don’t worry if you missed any of the tips. I’ve got all the details for you right here!

Monthly Savings on Household Bills

Don’t let money slip out of your fingers every month! Here are some simple ways to save on your monthly home bills:

Electricity:
NES has a page on their website, dedicated to helping you save money: http://nespower.com/WaysToSave.html – If you own your own home and have had NES service for one year, you definitely want to take advantage of the FREE in home evaluation, but the web page also includes the following:
·         Free do-it-yourself energy audit and free conservation kit
·         In-Home Evaluation Program with incentives up to $500 for making energy efficiency upgrades
·         Free online PowerWise Bill Analyzer to calculate your energy usage and identify ways to save
·         Power Saver Calculators
·         Various rebates, incentives and low-interest financing
·         Helpful energy saving tips
·         “How-to save” videos on our YouTube channel

Home Communications:
*Look for ways to bundle the items below. Often times you can save a great deal if you stay with one company. At the same time, if you’re not, use that to leverage a better deal when you call customer service.

Aside from bundling, here are a few other ways to save in these specific home communication areas:
Internet:
*Comcast just launched their “Internet Essentials” program:
Internet Essentials Provides Low-Cost Internet Service, Affordable Computers and Digital Literacy Training to Families with Children in the National School Lunch Program. Service Details:
Internet Essentials participants will receive:
·         Residential Internet service for $9.95 a month;
·         No price increases, no activation fees, or equipment rental fees;
·         A voucher to purchase a low-cost computer for $149.99 + tax;
·         Access to free digital literacy training in print, online or in person.

Additional benefits include a complementary Norton™ Security Suite ($160 value) for comprehensive online security protection. Families who qualify will be enrolled for 3 years! Even if you don’t qualify for this program, this is definitely something we need to spread the word about.

*If you find yourself needing internet both at home and on the go, considering turning your cell phone into a hot spot! Cell phone carriers, like Sprint, now sell smart phones that can also act as a mobile hot spot. We pay less than $30 a month and can connect up to 5 devices to the hot spot! Plus it has access to the same coverage area and 3G/4G network as the phone does!

Cable:
We all love to watch tv, but cable can be so expensive! If you’re considering cancelling your cable altogether, know that you can still watch your favorite shows on free online stations like hulu.com. Also, all the major networks let you watch their shows through their website. Some tv’s now are even WiFi enabled, or you could hook up your computer to the tv if you want to watch on a bigger screen!

Phone:
So many people are completely getting rid of their home phones altogether since you can now get free long distance on your cell phone. However, Magic Jack is another low-cost alternative if you just have to have a home phone and/or local phone number. This service costs less than $20 a YEAR and runs through your internet (so yes, you do need internet service for it to work!). The good news is that you can take your Magic Jack to ANY computer and your phone number will follow you.

Heating/Cooling:
-Keep your thermostat set on a constant temp without constantly adjusting it.
-Make sure vents/ducts are clean and clear from obstacles, especially dryer vents.
