When Justin & Trisha Davis write a book, Beyond Ordinary results... When Justin & Trisha Davis write a book, Beyond Ordinary results...

When I learned my friends (and former campus pastors) Justin & Trisha Davis were penning their story, of course I wanted to read it to support them, but I’d figured I’d already heard it all before.

After all, they’d always been very transparent about the fires they faced in their marriage, both in personal conversations and from the pulpit.

I was wrong.

What resulted can be summed up best by the title of the book itself…”Beyond Ordinary“.

I took Beyond Ordinary with me on a business trip and devoured it; other than Love Does, this is one of the only “Two-Sitting” books I’ve read in a LONG time. That means I started it one night, got about halfway through and then got up early the next morning to finish it!

When I texted Justin & Trish before going to bed that first night to tell them how ensconced I was in their book, I think their initial concern was that the content was not deep enough. I assured them that the book was far from an easy read, but rather a compelling one.

Just look at what I did to this book!
IMG 0972 300x300 When Justin & Trisha Davis write a book, Beyond Ordinary results...

As much as I found myself laughing out loud, I spend equal time underlining, highlighting, starring and dog-earring some pages on both the top AND the bottom!

Their personal stories were relevant and their insights on God’s truth were fresh and practical.

And don’t assume that Justin & Trisha’s story is only valuable for couples trying to survive an affair; to the contrary. I believe it is a must read for all of us who are married who, whether we like it or not, are dangerously close to drifting towards such an event.

I am so proud of these two for not only actively pursuing God’s best for their marriage and their family but for ultimately running bravely towards helping as many couples as possible!

So go buy Beyond Ordinary while you can; I’m off to re-read all the notes I’ve scribbled in the margins…

Beyond Ordinary is just one of the fabulous books I’m highlighting in my Book Week 2013. Make sure to check them all out!

Jenni Catron’s “Just Lead” puts her practice onto paper

Jenni Catrons Just Lead puts her practice onto paper Jenni Catrons Just Lead puts her practice onto paper

As Book Week 2013 continues, I’m thrilled to bring you an insanely unique offering: “Just Lead” by my friend Jenni Catron and Sherry Surratt.

For the past year, I’ve been part of a group of special women thanks to Jenni. She had a passion to surround herself with like-minded, motivated and driven women that could share with and learn from each other. I would have been an idiot not to accept such an invitation to connect.

Last Fall, Jenni humbly asked if we’d be willing to work through a new book together…a book she was in the final process of writing and editing with her friend Sherry. That book was “Just Lead“. Of course we unanimously agreed to dig in.

I don’t think I’m overstating the fact that Jenni is a trailblazer in her field. Not only is Jenni a leader by title (the Executive Director of my multi-site church, Crosspoint), but more importantly, she leads in practice.

JC Press Shot 2011 290x300 Jenni Catrons Just Lead puts her practice onto paper

She is a constant student. She continually educates herself. She passes that knowledge to others. And most importantly, she executes.

For many years, the words “Women” and “Leader” were not allowed to be used bumped up against each other. Now that those barriers have been broken through, it’s important that we have solid resources to guide us in becoming the best we can be.

After reading through this manuscript with Jenni over the past months, it’s now my pleasure to share “Just Lead” with you as part of Book Week 2013!

That was going to be my whole book review of Jon Acuff’s new book, Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work that Matters Start Night with Jon Acuff. Start Book by Jon Acuff. Start says Sami..

One word. Done.

The book is called Start. Jon Acuff wants you to Start. So why would I waste any more words than that when you don’t need to read about this book, you need to start acting as a result of this book!

I know, I know, you haven’t read it yet.

So what.

Why let that one little detail get in the way of stopping everything right now to pursue your dreams?

jon acuff start sami cone 300x268 Start Night with Jon Acuff. Start Book by Jon Acuff. Start says Sami.

I got to attend Jon’s “Start Night” back in February and I was marked by his not-so-subtle brand of humility, humor and, most notably, passion.

Of course, the night would not have been complete without Dave Ramsey himself chiming in. He gave us insight as to why he believes Jon has been so successful – and how anyone can mirror that success:
Be Grateful. Be Good. Be Hard-Working.

Dave’s endorsement of “Start” resonated with me:
It moves the needle in people’s lives. It’s the book for the under-employed, the unemployed…or those that with they were. Go from average to awesome!

Jon explained how to accomplish that last sentiment very simply:
There are two paths in life: the road to average & awesome. To get to average, do nothing. <To get to awesome> be the person you think you can be. – be your secret self.

The thing I like most about this book is that it moves you from inspiration to action.

So instead of telling you more of what I think, I’ll share what I know Jon wants you to do:

It’s time to punch fear in the face.
It’s time to escape average.
It’s time to do work that matters.

It’s time to START.

A Parenting Book Worth Reading: The Passionate Mom Book Review & Giveaway

1595555099.jpg 197x300 A Parenting Book Worth Reading: The Passionate Mom Book Review & Giveaway

One of the first pieces of advice I give parents-to-be is this: Don’t read any parenting books!

But The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill (director of iMom.com) is a parenting book worth reading…which is why I’m thrilled Susan offered me a chance to both review this book and offer a copy to giveaway to one of you!

Our parenting journey is just that…OUR journey. Which is why I usually tell new parents to stay away from all the ‘parenting manuals’ out there. While there are some fabulous reads, often they become a source of guilt and distraction rather than what they are meant to be, a source of help navigating one of the most important jobs most of us will ever have.

However, The Passionate Mom is much more than a manual; it is a thoughtful roadmap for how a passionate mom can parent almost any child…confidently.

And that is a key word, not only when it comes to parenting, but for life in general: confidence.

In fact, I was just listening to an old sermon from my Florida pastor, Dr. Tom Mullins, based on his book called The Confidence Factor. He mentioned an anonymous quote that stuck with me, “Confidence and courage come through preparation and practice.”

Did you hear that?

Parenting is not about perfection. This resonated greatly as I read a similar comment from Susan, “No mom can control her child’s future, but every mom can parent well.”

Just because we cannot control does not mean we cannot plan, prepare and practice. And I think no-one would be more surprised than Susan herself that she uncovered a parenting plan encompassing these principles based on the Old Testament book of Nehemiah.

In fact, Susan discovered a pattern of “P’s” in Nehemiah that provide the overall foundation for her book. I love how she showcases them right in the introduction of her book:

(Nehemiah) perceived the situation, he pondered every task, he was driven with passion to search for solutions, he prayed for direction, he patiently waited for opportunities, he methodically prepared to take action, he maintained his purpose, he developed the plan and he persevered through problems to the end.

The Passionate Mom, written by a mom of five, is such a worthwhile investment of your time, that I asked Thomas Nelson if I could give a copy away, and they agreed. So please take the time to enter to win a copy below or better yet, support my friend Susan and buy a copy from ThomasNelson.com right now! (You’ll also save 20% off when you click the link I provided).

Flight Park Nashville Airport Parking Review – a tale of poor customer service

To be completely honest, I gave a lot of thought as to whether I should write this review of Flight Park Nashville, whose airport parking services we chose to use this past week after purchasing a Groupon.

Realistically, sharing my experiences with my friends is what I did way before I started blogging (don’t we all?). But now that I have a public voice, with that comes responsibility.

But I was EXTREMELY disappointed in our experience with Flight Park tonight and would hate for any of you to be treated the way I treated.

The deciding factor for me in whether or not to write this unsolicited review of Flight Park airport parking was that a slightly similar experience happened with the Nashville parking service we typically use (Executive Parking), but with a MUCH different result. So if they had enough wherewithall to handle a mistake with grace and dignity, I don’t know why others couldn’t possess the same basic human skills as well.

UPDATE: I was contacted by Eric, the co-owner of Flight Park expressing his great concern over the fact that I had a less than desirable experience. He said in the 12 years he’s been in business, he’s had less than a handful of negative complaints. I truly appreciate the fact that he reached out to me and I suggested there needs to be a different level of customer service amongst his employees, especially those in an ownership role. He felt my blog post was very harsh, and did not appreciate that I said there was a lack of common sense used. Obviously, I’m not in the airport parking business and trust he knows how to run his business better than I do and that I may be an anomaly in this situation.

I ended the conversation by saying that regardless of whether or not we agree or disagree, I can’t change the way I was made to feel (much like I can’t tell my 8 year old daughter to stop crying when she’s upset, regardless of whether it’s a rational reason or not). Bottom line is this: I will accept the fact that what happened to me at Flight Park was not their usual level of service and the fact that Eric went through the trouble to rectify the situation speaks volumes to me. It’s just unfortunate that I was made to feel the way I did.

*****
Here’s the low down:
We arrived at Nashville International Airport around 6:30pm after logging a 12 hour day up to that point. We gathered our bags from baggage claim and called Flight Park as we were instructed to do. Making our way to the ground transporation with (admittedly) far too many bags and two small children was not what I would call a quick process, but, as I later explained to the manager, it’s not like I was hanging out, chit-chatting with the locals while smoking a cigarette either.

It appeared that we just missed a shuttle pulling away from us as we made it outside, so we proceeded to the pickup location. Seeing as it was in the teens and we just emerged from 70 degree weather, we weren’t thrilled about waiting outside, but we also didn’t’ want to risk missing another shuttle by waiting in the ‘waiting room’.

We noticed both of their competitors each had two shuttles come while we continued to wait, so I called again. They said two shuttles were on their way. When we finally saw a shuttle, they announced they couldn’t stop where we were standing – apparently, we were on the left side of the sign instead of the right (a detail that they failed to mention to us, but in all fairness to them, did turn out to be on the bottom of the back side of our parking receipt).

The shuttle driver shouted so much as that out the window as he passed by us. By the time we got the kids and the luggage together and made our way to the right pickup location, the shuttle had filled again and left us on the sidewalk.

So I called again.

They assured me a second shuttle was on its way, and it did show up a minute later.

To our surprise again, we let ourselves into a shuttle with absolutely no heat going on. After our family and another couple loaded in and the driver finished loading the bags, we had to ask for him to turn the heat on.

He radioed ‘base’ and told them our names and that we were on our way back. When we arrived, we found our van with the trunk open, front windows down, and the heat blaring out the car at 84 degrees.

But here’s the kicker: it had been running for 25 minutes!!!!

Would you EVER sit anywhere in your car and let the engine run with full heat and open windows for 5 minutes, much less 25?

Not this girl.

Perhaps my mistake is that I operate in this world with a basic understanding of common sense and expect others to do so as well. Obviously, my expectations are too high.

When I went in to the office, they let me know I had no balance because of my Groupon. I questioned whether or not to say anything else because there was another customer in there and while I believe in being honest, there’s no need to embarrass anyone.

However, they asked how I was, so I proceeded to tell them how shocked I was that our engine had been left running for so long. Here are a few of the responses I got back from them:
“How do you know it was 25 minutes?”
“What’s wrong with that?”
“Why did you wait so long before getting on the shuttle?” (This is when I offered then the above-mentioned cigarette smoking comment along with the question of whether or not they’d sit in their car in a parking lot with the engine running for 25 minutes).

I got blank stares. I got snarky comments thrown my way. He made his frustration with me clear. There may have eventually been a pathetic apology, but it was masked with a blatant disregard for any sense of customer service.

He asked me what I wanted, to which I replied, “I want to understand why this happened and I don’t want this to be how my vacation ends).

I got nothin’.

So I walked away, but when I met up with my husband a few steps later and he noticed the workers rolling their eyes and obviously talking unkindly about me as I walked away, I marched myself back in there to confront the men.

WHen asked why they would do such a thing, he denied any such action. When I asked for a manager’s card, he said he was one of the managers. When he then tried to ‘make it right’ by offering me $3 for a gallon of gas, I was mortified.

Really?

I suppose you get what you pay for.

At the very end of the exchange, the second worker decided to pipe up in his company’s defense and said that they left windows open because ’90% of cards these days auto-lock once the engine is running, so it’s for everyone’s safety’…because leaving the trunk flung open isn’t protection enough against a lock-out?

Again, I don’t understand the lack of common sense.

I finally walked away, realizing this wasn’t how I wanted my vacation to end and coming to MY senses that I wasn’t getting anywhere with these people.

****

(Afternote: I’ve sat on this for a week or so and debated again whether of not to publish this, but ultimately decided to post because it met the criteria for everything else I post…to help YOU!)

Has anyone else in Nashville (or where you live) experienced something similar when it comes to a service like this?

New American Girl Caroline Giveaway (Historical Doll)

Meet Caroline Lo Res 250x300 New American Girl Caroline Giveaway (Historical Doll)

UPDATE: This American Girl doll giveaway has ended, but you can enter my new My American Girl doll giveaway now!

At long last, the new American Girl doll is here and she is the newest in their historical doll collection! Her name is Caroline and you can win her in this American Girl giveaway!

If you’ve read my other posts on American Girl this summer, you’ll remember that I’m a new convert to the American Girl brand…in large part thanks to understanding that American Girl was created by educators for the purpose of teaching young girls history through the stories of girls like them through the ages.

I fell in love with the girls’ stories when we visited the American Girl Place Chicago and even got teary-eyed as their stories came to life and I imagined what it must have been like to be a little girl living through WWII (a war my own father fought in!) or to be a young black girl in the South during the time of the Underground Railroad. They paint a picture of history that our daughters will never get in their textbooks alone!

While my heart leaned toward a historical American Girl doll, I completely understood my daughter’s choice when she decided on McKenna (the 2012 Doll of the Year) as her very first American Girl doll for one simple reason, “Her story is my story mom!”.

But when I learned that American Girl was adding their newest historical doll this September, I had to have a sneak peak! In fact, I shared Caroline on TV during my  Talk of the Town “Save vs. Splurge” segment as the perfect gift for a family to join together to buy their little girl for a special occasion.

Caroline immediately won the hearts of the viewers and the crew and I heard mention of words like “Exquisite”, “Quality”, “Beautiful” and even “I’m Shocked!” over how well made and stunning the dolls actually are. (I guess I’m not the only cynic in this world!).

Carolines Skiff LR 300x292 New American Girl Caroline Giveaway (Historical Doll)

So now, 200 years after America secured its standing as a truly independent nation, I’m happy that I can introduce you to American Girl’s newest historical character, Caroline Abbott!

Caroline, an independent and adventurous nine-year-old girl whose story is set near Lake Ontario during the War of 1812, learns to face her most challenging moments using her heart as her compass. Going above and beyond to help those around her, I love that Caroline gives of herself without expecting anything in return—becoming the kind of real everyday hero that any girl can be. More importantly, Caroline shows girls today how to stay steady and believe in themselves during difficult times.

American Girl’s vice president, Jean McKenzie gives further insight into why Caroline was created:
“Our newest historical character, Caroline, is a brave, independent girl who teaches girls today that they can navigate life’s challenges by staying strong, making good decisions, and taking action. We know our fans will be inspired by the stories of Caroline, who shows girls that they can set their own course to help make changes for the greater good.”

I was so inspired that I couldn’t wait to give Caroline to my daughter!!!

But then I paused.

Hadn’t we just said that an American Girl doll is special and that we didn’t want her collecting EVERY single doll, but rather getting to know the doll through her stories and finding that special doll she identified with (like we did with McKenna)?

Yes, we did.

So we came up with what I think is the perfect solution (and to be honest, what I believe to be the original intent of the creators of American Girl): we’re going to introduce Caroline to Kariss through her stories first.

Caroline launches with six historical books written by author and social historian Kathleen Ernst…that should give Kariss plenty of time to get to know not only who Caroline is, but the period in which she grew up. Once she reads more about Caroline, then we’ll determine if and when she’s ready to meet her face to face icon smile New American Girl Caroline Giveaway (Historical Doll)

But I also realize that many of you are like me and either couldn’t afford an American Girl doll for your daughter or didn’t understand the heart behind the company until now and thus have not bought an American Girl doll. So I want to change that for one lucky reader…

The American Girl Doll company has been gracious enough to give me one American Girl Doll set to give away which includes both the Caroline doll and her first book, “Meet Caroline”. My only request is that this go to a girl who does not yet have an American Girl doll.

Yes, I realize I can’t legitimately track or prove that you don’t have an American Girl doll if you enter, but I’m going to trust that you, my faithful readers, will be honest in letting this doll be someone’s very FIRST American Girl doll!

So if you have a daughter, grand-daughter, niece, neighbor, or little friend that you know would LOVE this doll, I hope that you will enter the contest below and get the chance to meet Caroline for yourself!

UPDATE: Giveaway has ended – Congratulations to Sara R!

American Girl generously provided me with Caroline to both review and to giveaway. This post expresses all my own thoughts and I can’t wait to hear what you think about her too!

My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families

My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families

When I first heard about My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Royal Pony Wedding My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families coming out on DVD, I thought it would be so cute to get for my 7 year old daughter.

After all, I had grown up with My Little Pony and thanks to the rebirth of some of the classic 80′s toys I grew up with (& the princess dress up clothes you can get for My Little Pony at Downtown Disney!), my daughter now loves My Little Pony too.

I thought it was cute how the ponies were capitalizing on the royal wedding trend which was fine by me. Having British heritage, we’ve loved following the royals and all their adventures in the last year in particular.

So I didn’t even bother to read any other reviews before asking to review My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Royal Pony Wedding My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families.

I should have.

Don’t get me wrong, the ponies are as cute as ever (though a little too computer generated for my taste). But the modern My Little Pony movies seem to have a darker side then their predeccesor’s from a few decades ago.

It all started out innocently enough, but the plot took a drastic twist when the supposed bride turned very evil. I certainly wasn’t expecting the dark theme masked within a My Little Pony wedding movie.

Another mistake I made was that I wasn’t sitting and watching it with my children. The video actually contains multiple ‘episodes’ and the first finishes with a “To be continued” into the second episode with again, the evil undertone cliffhanger. I came up to watch with them about halfway through the first episode and was shocked at what I saw.

Not “Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen anything like this before” shocked, but “Why is this necessary in a My Little Pony movie?” kind of shock.

I’m all for suspense and antagonists to develop a plot, but this was entirely unnecessary…especially for this age group.

I did allow my kids to watch the second episode so I could finish the story to see if it resolved, but then that was it.

Considering how many other artfully crafted kids’ DVD’s there are on the market today, I wouldn’t waste your time on this one.

The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect…

p581502387 2 The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect...

Yes this is a Lorax movie review, but it might not be what you would expect…

I try not to get my hopes up too high for kids’ movies these days. Even though I love a good animated film (especially those that keep in mind that parents are usually watching the movie with their kiddos), I try not to let my expectations get too high.

However, when it came to The Lorax, I have to admit, I was pumped for this one!

It goes without saying that this is a Dr. Seuss classic. But what excited me more was that the creators of Despicable Me were also a part of the creative team behind this film.

A slight aside: I LOVED Despicable Me The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect... Now that’s the perfect example of a kids’ movie I had very low expectations of and to this day, still can’t get enough of! It’s cute, it’s clever and more importantly, shares a great message with my kids.

All the things The Lorax wasn’t.

I feel like there was a HUGE amount of hype, promotion and partnered advertising that went along with The Lorax release…and perhaps that’s what sent my expectations over the moon, but I have to admit that the film was just average.

Now don’t get me wrong, I didn’t despise it like I did Rango. No sir. In fact, my kids loved it. But in terms of shelling out my movie dollars, it’s not where I’d choose to spend mine.

7E217846 2BAD 40CD 8C19 E0F1DE6CAAE2 258x300 The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect...

The DVD was just released on August 7, 2012, but I’d recommend renting it first to see if it’s something you want to add to your movie collection.

American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

During our recent “Luxury for Less” Chicago Road Trip, we were treated to quite the Chicago family experience: an American Girl Dinner at American Girl Place Chicago, followed by the ultimate American Girl themed “Chicago’s First Lady” River Cruise!

I’ll share more about our experience at American Girl Place Chicago in the coming days, but I didn’t want to wait any longer to share about the Chicago River Cruise because this weekend will be your last opportunity to cruise with American Girl and Chicago’s First Lady cruises for the summer!

Although I’m a native Chicagoan, I haven’t been back in years, and this was my first trip where my kids were old enough to walk by themselves icon smile American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review Considering they’re now 6 & 8, I had a lot I wanted to show them in a short amount of time.

So when the opportunity arose to see Chicago via a river cruise (one of the the best ways to take in the highlights of the city) via an American Girl infused tour, we jumped at the chance!

American Girl Place Cafe

The evening started with dinner at the American Girl Place Cafe. My initial impression was nothing less than impressive. Immaculately thought out and decorated, this cafe was a little girl’s dream cafe, while also being equally inviting for the entire family.

Case in point: after we were welcomed, the hostess immediately went to get a doll chair so Kariss’ new doll (McKenna) could join us at the table, but they also had “loaner” American Girl dolls (even boys!) so even if you don’t have a doll, you don’t feel excluded from the fun.

The most memorable part of our meal happened almost immediately upon sitting down.

I mentioned thoughtfulness when it came to the cafe. This was demonstrated in 3 very specific details as soon as we were seated:
IMG 5375 300x225 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review
1. There were bows on ponytail holders being used as napkin rings that we could take home with us (brilliant)

IMG 5384 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

2. They brought a box of family questions for us to ask each other and discuss during our meal, further encouraging the family bonding experience (and staving off the question, “What can we do ’til our food gets here???”)

IMG 5377 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

3. This is the most brilliant part: they immediately brought us an appetizer sampler plate with equal portions of a variety of fun and healthy foods for our entire table! Things ranging from cut vegetables and cheesy potato bites to artichoke dip & cheese. The minds behind American Girl proved to me once again that not only do you not have to ‘dumb down’ things for kids, but that with just the slightest creative effort, you can make a HUGE impact on your family at mealtime!

To be honest, the meal itself was not notable. I ordered a roasted chicken & vegetables that was very average, as was the pizza my son ordered. Surprisingly, the stuffed shells that my daughter ordered (and that they custom tailored for her with olive oil instead of red sauce) was delicious!
IMG 5381 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

And the meal truly ended with something special: a beautiful dessert sampler for each of us that had ties to three different American Girl dolls
IMG 5383 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

I can’t say that I would go back to the cafe for the food alone, but when you take the entire experience into consideration, I believe it was well worth it.

Chicago’s First Lady River Cruise

After dinner, we headed to the main floor of American Girl Place Chicago to board the buses that would take us to the river so we could board our cruise. The docent rode on our bus and shared some wonderful history that I wasn’t even aware of as we drove down Michigan Avenue.

I really thought my kids would be thrilled with the “boat ride”, but seeing as we’d already spent the morning at the Legoland Discovery Center and the afternoon at American Girl Place, there were pretty pooped and not sure what to expect. Still, we had a perfect summer night to be on the water and I encouraged them to take in as much as they could.

IMG 5393 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

We even passed by Marina Towers, the iconic twin flower-shaped buildings where my parents used to live!
IMG 5398 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review
I also think this would have been a great experience to do with your extended family or as a special treat with multiple families so the kids had friends to share in the experience with.

After cruising for about 45 minutes, we made a turn to head back and captured this shot of our family in front of the skyline:
IMG 5403 225x300 American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review
I will say, this is about the time when my kids lost interest. While the description of the cruise suggests it’s appropriate for girls ages 8 & up, I would venture to say that unless your child is at least 10, they’re not going to stay engaged for the entire river cruise.

While our docent from the Chicago Architectural Foundation was beyond knowledgeable, from a kids’ perspective, her presentation was just a little too heavy in architectural history and a little too light in American Girl references. Although I thought the cruise was thoroughly engaging, most of the kids ended up on the large center bench of the top deck huddled around an iPad icon wink American Girl Chicago River Cruise & Cafe Review

If you ask me, the entire cruise was stunning, but the most beautiful moments of the night came towards the end at sunset:

Shogun Restaurant Franklin TN Review: Early Bird not worth the Savings

20120719 131105 Shogun Restaurant Franklin TN Review: Early Bird not worth the Savings

If you’re thinking about dining at Shogun Restaurant in Franklin (Brentwood), TN, please read this review first. We recently went to take advantage of their Early Bird savings, but even this frugal girl would much rather have paid full price elsewhere in exchange for better food and a more comfortable experience.

Let me also preface this Shogun review by saying that I was not asked to eat there nor was I asked to write this review. I was purely going to the Shogun Restaurant because the only thing I wanted for my recent birthday was to have a Japanese dinner and learned about their special pricing from 4:30-6:30pm.

Unfortunately, it was a bit of a joke from the beginning. I learned it was a Hibachi grill, but we don’t necessarily like to eat Hibachi exclusively. So when I was told you could order from their regular menu from the Hibachi side too, we sat there so the kids could enjoy the show.

As we sat down, however, we opened the menu to find there were ONLY Hibachi offerings (as well as Sushi). The Hibachi chicken was only $11.95 for dinner, so we just decided to go with it anyway.

When the young waitress arrived, she seemed like she just had been working out and was called in to cover a shift, and was a little bitter about it. There was no smile, her hair was messily pulled back and she wore a very low cut tank top with a fleece jacket over it, with a logo from another establishment! Not to mention, she had a young man shadowing her (I’m guessing, because she never introduced him) who was much more professionally dressed, yet she treated him like a dog. She impolitely corrected him in front of us and it made all of us at the table feel awkward.

On to the food: the soup was literally stone cold, the portions varied greatly from person to person and ultimately we were told they had certain things, waited for them, and then finally were told they didn’t actually carry those items, thus making it a very disjointed meal where it seemed like one of us was always waiting on the other to eat because of the inefficient service.

Overall, the food itself was fair – nothing to throw away, but certainly not something I would be willing to overlook the poor service over in order to return to eat. And certainly not the meal I was hoping to have to celebrate my birthday.

They did sing a lovely traditional Japanese song and bring out some (frozen) cheesecake in honor of my big day, but again, not worth a return trip.

I wanted to share this with you as a perfect case in point: sometimes it isn’t worth “saving” money at a restaurant (or anywhere else for that matter!) if you’re not actually going to enjoy your overall experience. Of course, if you can find a coupon or discount for a place you LOVE, then by all means go for it!

So that being said, does anyone have a Japanese restaurant in Nashville that you actually love?
