Meal Plan Monday: July 30, 2012

monday meal plan 300x153 Meal Plan Monday: July 30, 2012 Here’s my Meal Plan Monday for the week of July 30, 2012.

I’m noticing a trend for our Augusts…it seems to be a time of great uncertainty and fluctuation with summer ending, school beginning and the crop of other things that always seem to emerge to disrupt our schedules AND budgets. So this year, as last year, we’re planning to eat as exclusively from our stockpile as possible.

Of course we’ll still be taking advantage of our local farmer’s market for fresh eggs & produce. And I know we’ll be eating out some because our anniversary is the 2nd & my mom’s birthday is the 5th, which makes sticking to a strict budget even more important this month.

I’ve also been talking about another free meal planning service besides this blog, “Food on the Table”. You can still get it for free, but only with this unique code: SUMMERFREE. This is a great way to get new ideas for your own meal plan…PLUS you can choose to tailor it around your favorite stores to shop at!

I’m keeping breakfast & lunch the same this week just to streamline our process. Feel free to fill-in with what works better for your family.

Keep in mind, we base a lot of  our dinners below on the  Whole Foods meal plan from eMeals, (just remember that if you want the actual recipes, you’ll have to subscribe to eMeals yourself icon wink Meal Plan Monday: July 30, 2012

Free Nashville Ballet Class for National Dance Day July 2012

20120126 090044 300x224 Free Nashville Ballet Class for National Dance Day July 2012

In honor of National Dance Day (July 28, 2012), the Nashville Ballet will be offering free dance classes! Not only that, they’ll be teaching choreography from “So You Think You Can Dance” to record and submit to the show!

For the second year in a row, Nashville Ballet will serve as Nashville’s official location of National Dance Day on Saturday, July 28, by offering free sample classes and choreography provided by the Fox hit realty show (& my personal favorite show!) So You Think You Can Dance.

“Through dance, we have the power to express our feelings, tell a story, accomplish our fitness goals and have fun,” Nashville Ballet Executive Director Angie Adams said. “We want to offer as many opportunities as possible for members of the community to experience the transformative power of dance.”

Nashville Ballet’s National Dance Day will offer free classes in ballet, hip hop, contemporary and dance conditioning with elements of yoga and Pilates. All class participants will have an opportunity to learn choreography provided by SYTYCD, and perform as a group. The performance will be recorded and submitted to the SYTYCD website.

Here are the classes students can choose from between 10 am and noon:

10 – 10:30 a.m.                  All participants warm up with yoga/Pilates/conditioning class
10:45 – 11:15 a.m.            Choose amongst ballet, hip hop or contemporary
11:30 a.m. – Noon           Choose between Zumba or hip hop SYTYCD choreography

SYTYCD Executive Producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe instituted National Dance Day in 2010 to encourage Americans to engage in the kind of fun physical activity they see profiled each week on the television show. Lythgoe’s initiatives to increase physical activity through dance and raise awareness for dance education across the country were recognized by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) in 2011.

National Dance Day classes at Nashville Ballet are free and open to men and women ages 13 and up. Advance registration is not required to participate. Participation will be offered on a first come, first served basis as space permits. Sample classes on National Dance Day are offered at the School of Nashville Ballet during the fall semester, which begins Monday, August 6 and is currently open for enrollment. Students who enjoy National Dance Day sample classes can enroll online at any time.

Students interested in enrolling in the School of Nashville Ballet are invited to attend one of two open houses Saturday, August 4 at each School of Nashville Ballet location – in Nashville and Brentwood. The open house at The School of Nashville Ballet in Nashville will be held 10 a.m. to noon, and at the School of Nashville Ballet Brentwood Campus 2 to 4 p.m.

I’ll be making an airport run this morning icon sad Free Nashville Ballet Class for National Dance Day July 2012 but I hope to see a lot of you dancing along!

Just out of curiosity, would you choose the Hip Hop or Zumba choreography class?

The Birthdays of July 26

20120725 212956 The Birthdays of July 26

July 26 is very special to our family because there are actually 3 of our family members with the same birthday! Our July 26 birthdays are:
*My daughter, Kariss (who turns 8 today)
*My father in law, Rick Sr. (who you may know from this blog as “Dad Cone” if you’ve been following his health journey after being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor this summer)
*Ricky’s Uncle David (his mom’s brother)

Kind of crazy, isn’t it?

It’s interesting because when it comes to Kariss’ birthday, I feel like we’ve already celebrated it (She had a McKenna American Girl birthday party earlier this month), but we still want to do something special for her today. Yet when we asked her what she wanted to do or where she wanted to eat, she kept drawing a blank.

Doesn’t that seem odd for a kid when given carte blanche to do whatever they want?

After more prodding, we finally got something: She wanted to stay home. She wanted to play. She wanted us.

I wrote a post earlier this year on how the best present for our kids is our presence. Although we love being a family on the go, I guess we may have been gone a little too much this summer. We moved into a new house at the end of May and between travel, work and family issues, it seems like we’ve hardly been here!

So we’re getting back to basics today, shutting down the electronics and playing some serious games of tickle monster, monsters in the bushes, spy, gymnastics and whatever creative games her 8 year old brain comes up with.

Oh, and I think she want’s some Sweet Cece’s too icon wink The Birthdays of July 26

So please join me in wishing my baby girl the happiest birthday an 8 year old could ever have!

*On a side note, if you’re wondering why I haven’t posted on Dad Cone in awhile, it’s for two reasons: 1. there hasn’t been a lot of change in his condition and 2. it’s not exactly my story to tell. While I wanted to have a concise way to share about his story in a way I relate best (writing) so the most people could be praying, I’ve also come upon a little backlash for it. Realizing it’s not my life, I’ve decided to not write about the details of his days for awhile. PLEASE, continue to pray and should there be any major developments, I promise to pass the facts along. Thanks for understanding xoxo

Free Summer Fun on a Budget: Talk of the Town July 24, 2012

talk of the town sami 300x200 Free Summer Fun on a Budget: Talk of the Town July 24, 2012
It’s still summer, but school is right around the corner! So if you want to continue some summer fun on a budget while still encouraging the kids to learn and play, I’ve got some free summer fun you can take advantage of right in your home and around Nashville!

NewsChannel5.com | Nashville News, Weather
I shared these tips on Talk of the Town on July 24, 2012, so if you watched the show and missed any of the details, here you go:

I wanted to make sure I accomplished a few very important things with my kids over the summer: learn more about music, get comfortable on the computer, teach them tennis and read more.

As a wife, blogger & mom who has never homeschooled (or thought anything of the sort was possible), my ideas for how to structure summer learning, yet make it fun, didn’t exactly come together as quickly as I would have liked. But then I discovered I could accomplish several of these objectives with just one program: QuaverMusic.com

I was excited to find this learning resources in our local community – QuaverMusic.com has developed a new program for teaching kids about music using the latest technology (and fun kids will appreciate!). Quaver himself is a bit of a mad scientist (think Bill Nye the science guy, but for music!) who is obviously passionate about passing on his love for music to kids. There is an entire DVD system designed for music educators and homeschool parents, but there are also amazing YouTube videos and free activities on their website where kids can not only learn about general music & theory, but also create their own music!

If you’re on the go but stuck inside, I’ve found that doing an App search on my smart phone will turn up a lot of great free educational games for school aged kids, including everything from Sight Words to Math games!

Of course, if you want to get the kids out of the house to learn and play, I’ve found a lot of great free summer fun around town too!

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is always free for children 18 & under. If you are a Bank of America card holder, you can also get in free the first weekend of every month (same program applies for The Country Music Hall of Fame).

If you want to get outside, check out the great TN parks. If you want to cool off, head to the Cumberland Park splash pad downtown. To get in touch with nature, head to Edwin Warner park closer to Bellevue/Belle Meade and explore their free Nature Center (you can also get free guided tours with reservations).

If the heat’s got you beat and you want to continue learning about TN in air conditioning, head to the TN State Museum where the permanent exhibits and Military Museum are ALWAYS free! Of course, the TN Public libraries are offering great storytimes, concerts and more throughout the summer (just consult with your local branch). And don’t forget the fabulous puppet theater at the main branch downtown!

Do you have a budding fireman on your hands? Most fire stations will give tours with advance notice (and kids will usually get a cool fire hat & sticker too!)

*Monkey’s Treehouse in Bellevue is also free from 5:30-7pm tonight (July 24)

I’ll also be teaching a Savings Nation Grocery Workshop from 6:30-8pm tonight at Grace Christian Academy in Leiper’s Fork. For more information or to find out how to book your own workshop, contact me.
