Radio City Rockettes Review – much more than just a kick line!

My Radio City Rockettes Review:

radio city christmas spectacular 300x217 Radio City Rockettes Review much more than just a kick line!

The first thing I thought to myself when the Radio City Rockettes took the stage in their Christmas Spectacular was, “these girls are so much more than just a kick line!”

Naturally, the Rockettes are famous for their kicks, but what I didn’t realize was that their Christmas Spectacular was exactly that, a show of spectacular proportions.

…and don’t start thinking that just because it’s in Nashville we’ve got the B-team…that couldn’t be further from the truth either. Having seen the original show in NYC, I was a bit skeptical about the caliber of talent we’d get. The truth is that everyone involved in the show, down to even the youngest performers, was top quality and goes through the same audition process as the girls in New York.

In this two hour show, you’ll see a variety of dance and song styles, along with amazingly ornate costumes; it’s no wonder so many girls grow up dreaming of becoming one of these lovely ladies. Even Santa himself makes appearances throughout the show with a message tailored to the Nashville audience icon wink Radio City Rockettes Review much more than just a kick line!

A new holiday tradition for our family!

It’s so hard to pick a favorite part of the show:
-my son loved the classic March of the Wooden Soldiers with their famous chain collapse at the end
-my daughter loved the classic Santa outfits in their famous Christmas routine that closed out the first Act
-I loved the homage to the nutcracker with all the dancing animals
-my husband loved the 5th Avenue New York City scene that showcased most of this talented cast on stage at once!
-my mother in law thoroughly enjoyed all of the show, but was feeling a bit sad that it left out the true meaning of Christmas…until we got to the end of the show:

The Grand Finale is a live nativity that tells the story and significance of “One Solitary Life”. With everything from camels to wise men, the entire cast comes together to beautifully depict why we celebrate Christmas and how the life of Jesus has had more impact on our world than any other in history. As the entire audience rose to the singing of the Hallelujiah chorus at the end of the show, it was hard not to be moved.

As we drove home tonight, my husband looked over at me and said that, “No matter how we need to make it happen, this has to be a part of our family Christmas tradition from this point forward.” I couldn’t agree more.

The best part is, you still have time to see this show with your friends and family before Christmas!

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular runs through December 24th at the Grand Ole Opry House and there is still a great special they’re running on tickets:

My family & I leaving the Grand Ole Opry House after the Rockettes

My only caution would be to allow yourselves PLENTY of time to get there. The traffic was backed up onto the highway for both the Opryland exit and the Opry Mills exit. We’re lucky we only missed 5 minutes of the show, but others were still streaming in when the first act was ending. There are definitely increased traffic challenges with Opry Mills still being closed, so keep that in mind. The good news is parking is free for the show!

A Look Inside the Gaylord Opryland Grand Re-Opening

IMG 1449 300x225 A Look Inside the Gaylord Opryland Grand Re Opening

Ricky & I at the Grand Re-Opening Celebration

While the Gaylord Opryland Resort officially opened on November 15th, Ricky & I got to be part of the Grand Re-Opening Celebration November 18-21.

It’s been reported that the hotel spend somewhere between $5-7 million on the weekend’s festivities designed to win over conference and event planners, so I was thrilled beyond words to be the only “mommy blogger” invited to take part.

Read my quote in The Tennessean about what Opryland means to families

Yes, we ate amazing food. Yes, they treated us to star-studded private concerts. Yes, we experienced all the holiday splendor Opryland has to offer.

But more than that, we were frequently moved to tears throughout the weekend because of what the Re-Opening of Opryland means to so many of us, especially here in Nashville. Beyond the jobs being replaced and the economy restored, Opryland and its Stars (employees) embody a spirit of pride, determination and values that is second to none. From the VP all the way down to the room attendants, we personally benefited and grew from the experience they created for EVERYONE on property (not just the VIPs).

What we love about Opryland is that whether you stay overnight in their luxury accommodations or go visit the 2 million lights for free with your family, they are committed to helping your family make memories that will last for a lifetime.

I know you all want to see a glimpse of the inside, so let me share just a piece of the beauty that is the newly renovated Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Resort:

Opryland General Manager, Pete Weien, gave members of the media a walking tour through the hotel and shared his first-hand flood experience with us. You’ll also notice the set-up for the Grand Re-Opening celebration behind him in the picture below.

IMG 1396 300x225 A Look Inside the Gaylord Opryland Grand Re Opening

The resort also added a new Mexican restaurant (Solario), moved the Jack Daniels Bar to “The District” area of the hotel (due to noise complaints from guests) and created the Conservatory Bar & Ravello in its place. If you saw any of the media coverage during the flood, you’ll recall these areas were under 10 feet of water:

One of our favorite new features in the hotel: interactive maps that not only help you know where you are, but will print directions to tell you how to get where you’re going! You can also use the touch screen to check weather, attractions and so much more.

A quintessential Opryland photo

We got to experience some great food while staying at Opryland. One of our favorite experiences was at Cascades, where my husband enjoyed a traditional American lunch (including their famous Crab Bisque) and I enjoyed some yummy Japanese food from Wasabi’s:

The Grand Re-Opening Ceremony was a cross between Cirque du Soleil and the Olympics, all performed right in the center of the Delta Atrium:

The Finale of the Grand Re-Opening Celebration

We even ran into Nashville Mayor Karl Dean on our way to the Keith Urban concert! Ricky has actually been mistaken for him here (well, we were in Cracker Barrel after all), but I don’t see the resemblance. What about you?

Separated at Birth?

I may be one of the only women in the world who is not a fan of Keith Urban, but after seeing him perform live, I must say he puts on an amazing show. He has a big heart and plays a mean guitar. Plus I appreciate that he circled the crowd while still playing and singing – Nashville loves you, Keith:

Guy Fieri cooks live (& entertains)

Guy Fieri even came in to cook for us on Saturday. He made great food, kept us laughing, and even brought me up on stage to play a version of “Minute to Win it” (again, I know, shocking to all of you that I got on stage in front of all these people icon wink A Look Inside the Gaylord Opryland Grand Re Opening

There’s so much more I could share with you, but I’ll have to post more pictures later of some of the other fun things we did.

Make sure you don’t miss my video of Santa arriving to the Opryland Lighting Ceremony too!

Gaylord Opryland Christmas Lights & Grand Re-Opening!

IMG 1368 300x225 Gaylord Opryland Christmas Lights & Grand Re Opening!

Gaylord Opryland Resort if officially back and we got to be there!

Yes, it’s true. Ricky and I are thrilled to let you all know that not only is Gaylord Opryland open for business again, but they are bigger and better than ever.

This weekend is their official grand re-opening after a six and a half month renovation following the devastating Nashville Flood. With a total of $270 million in rebuilding costs, the heart, drive and splendor of Gaylord Opryland is absolutely breathtaking.

The weekend kicked off with a lighting ceremony that featured highlights of all of their Country Christmas festivities and finished with a bang – literally! After Santa arrived on a float with Kris Kringle from “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” (the star of ICE! this year), the lights were turned on, fireworks blazed and the crowd roared.
