I felt the need to give you my own personal Rango review: Just say no!

I didn’t receive the movie for free and no one asked me to do this, but I don’t want anyone else to go through the pain I went through watching this with my kids.

Our church showed this for a Family Movie night that we missed, so I promised the kids that we would rent it from Redbox another time. I didn’t even think about looking into the movie or checking to see if friends had seen it. We just rented it.

Bad idea.

I honestly can’t tell you what Rango was about, other than a lizard trying to pretend he was something he wasn’t in the Wild West while surrounded by lots of other curious characters. It wasn’t funny. It wasn’t cute. In fact, it was a bit dark.

I quickly lashed out on Facebook, wondering why my friends didn’t warn me, and quickly discovered that others were equally disappointed, disallusioned and otherwise dissatisfied.

One of my favorite comments was made by my friend Nick in FL:
Yes, despite it being touted as a “family film,” it is far from it. Piper and I rented it and enjoyed it, but we didn’t let our kids see it at all. People need to know that animation does not always equal kids!!!

I thought this was such an important reminder of ALL of us who are parents. I used to not let my kids see anything other than G films (they’re 7 & under), but after seeing the genius films Megamind & Despicable Me that had such great humor and a good life lesson, I let my guard down a bit.

I think the important thing to remember is to never rely on a rating alone, but make use of the resourced around you, including reviews, the internet and yes, close friends and family.
