A Day of Anniversaries & New Celebrations! Top Ten Tuesday

boho rick sami cone 300x199 A Day of Anniversaries & New Celebrations! Top Ten Tuesday
Over the past few months, I’ve come to realize just how many milestones in my life have occurred on Tuesdays…and today is no exception. In fact, today is a day of multiple anniversaries and new celebrations!

First of all, I appeared on Talk of the Town again today highlighting Back to School Bargains – marking my 2 year anniversary with the show!

I also launched my site redesign (thanks to the amazing talents of Jeff Master!)…what do you all think?

Something new to celebrate: I’ve joined the team over at the Family-Friendly Morning Show with Doug & Jaci Velasquez as their Savings Expert!

But the most important anniversary/celebration of the day: it’s my 8th wedding anniversary!

I can’t believe I’ve been married to Ricky for eight years now – what a ride it’s been…and I can’t imagine anyone else I’d rather ride on this journey of life with icon smile A Day of Anniversaries & New Celebrations! Top Ten Tuesday

So to celebrate my man, I want to dedicate this Top Ten Tuesday to him:
1. He loves me
This may go without saying, but there is something powerful in knowing that you are loved by someone. He has no hesitation in showing or telling me he loves me – and I love him for it.

2. He is talented in areas I’m not
We always joke that he is more equipped to run our household than I am, yet he supports me in my desires to ‘play house’. While he never steps on my toes when it comes to doing things around the house, he’s quick to assist and take over when I need him to.

3. He is a hard worker
This man has a work-ethic like none other. Not only does he get things done faster than anyone I’ve ever seen, his standard of quality is so high. This is what makes him such a good leader: he leads by example.

4. He has a servant heart
If I had to describe him in one word, it would be selfless. He never thinks of himself first, and while I think that it gets him in trouble sometime, it also sets him apart in so many ways. I admire him for this because it’s not one of my best qualities…

5. He appreciates who I am as a woman
Again, may seem like a given, but he still thanks me for giving birth to our children! (And rightfully so, in my opinion!) This just goes back to his servant’s heart – that he never takes anything for granted.

6. He loves being with our family
If given the choice of doing anything at all, I think he would choose to just be with us, regardless of what we were doing. That’s saying something.

7. He’s a head taller than me
Don’t think I’m silly, but when I prayed for my husband, I prayed for someone a head taller than me so when we hugged, I fit right in under his chin….bliss…

8. He comes with his own catch phrases
Don’t ask – you just know if you know him…

8.5 His names
I love that you can immediately tell how someone knows Ricky & from what era they met him based on what name they call him by.

9. He never forgets anything – literally
This man still remembers the phone numbers of everyone he’s grown up with. He never forgets a face (or someone’s drink, for that matter, which comes in handy since he works at Starbucks). It’s endearing and annoying all at the same time (especially for this girl who’s ALWAYS forgetting things!)

10. He loves God
I honestly don’t know how marriages survive without something bigger at the center. He and I are both imperfect, flawed human beings who, when we let ourselves get in the way, can get pretty annoyed with each other. But when we step back, get outside of ourselves and remember, “we love because He first loved us“, this marriage thing works pretty well.

Babe, happy 8th anniversary. Thank you for loving me and I promise to love your Forever and For Always A Day of Anniversaries & New Celebrations! Top Ten Tuesday icon wink A Day of Anniversaries & New Celebrations! Top Ten Tuesday

Remembering the Nashville Flood Anniversary – One Year later

nashville flood tee Remembering the Nashville Flood Anniversary One Year later
Today is May 2, 2011….on year later after the epic Nashville Flood. Many people will be remembering the Nashville Flood anniversary in many different ways today.

It still seems surreal to think back to that day only a year ago. None of us knew what was to come. None of us….
In fact, we were hosting a garage sale with a friend and taking the kids to a birthday party, not knowing that only hours later people would be losing both their homes and their lives because of this deadly storm.

Here’s how it started in our own backyard:

While we may have been slow to comprehend what was happening around us, it did not take long to discover the devastation. Our church, Crosspoint, delayed the opening of our new Bellevue campus to mobilize volunteers into our community….one of the hardest hit in all of Nashville.

While the kids and I were not able to volunteer inside the devastated homes, we found other ways to help and meet daily needs: organizing supplies, helping with office needs and shuttling items to and from the disaster site. The images we saw immediately after the storm of our own friends’ homes were surreal:

What hit even closer to home was driving through the neighborhood we had just moved out of, knowing we too could have been one of the many families who had lost everything:

Last year, our news event was shared with others: the Times Square bomber and the BP oil spill in the Gulf. This year, it seems history is once again repeating itself. People around the world are waking up to the news that Osama bin Laden had finally been killed by American troops, nearly 10 years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In addition, hundreds are still missing and without homes after the devastating tornadoes that hit Alabama and much of the SouthEast.

Still, the one thing that remained true and resounding last year will be said this year: Nashville was and is one of the most resilient communities ever in the face of disaster and continues to be forward-looking, neighbor-helping and thankful for what we have rather than grieving what we’ve lost.

Of course, it helps when we have so much to be grateful for and so many who have come alongside to help in our time of need. In addition to all the people that came together within our community and across the country, many local celebrities, including Amy Grant and our friends from Tenth Avenue North, put on the “Love Your Neighbor” Benefit Concert. Amy also had some interesting advice to share with flood victims:

*Two weeks after the flood last year, I recorded my thoughts in my Nashville Flood Manifesto.
*Four months after the flood, the historic Grand Ole Opry re-opened on September 2nd with a “Spirit of Nashville Day“.
*And of course a short six months after the flood that completely devastated so much of the iconic Gaylord Opryland resort & hotel, it celebrated its Grand Re-Opening on November 15, just in time for all the Christmas festivities! My husband and I were lucky enough to be part of the Opryland Grand Re-Opening weekend and it once again reminded us of why we’re so proud to live in this town!

So much has happened in this past year, but amidst everything else that is going on in the world today, I wanted to take the time to stop and remember where we were a year ago and how far we’ve all come…together.

We are Nashville!!!
