Saving Mr Banks Celebrates Mary Poppins 50 Anniversary DVD

saving mr banks poster Saving Mr Banks Celebrates Mary Poppins 50 Anniversary DVD

To say I have been excited about the movie Saving Mr. Banks would be an understatement.

Ever since I first heard the premise of the film earlier this year, I couldn’t wait to see it.

I may or may not have even tried to get my son to skip his school Christmas play so that we could attend the media preview. (Don’t worry, the school play won out.)

But this past weekend we actually paid money to go see Saving Mr. Banks in the theater… Something I don’t do very often out of principle…. but I simply couldn’t wait until the DVD came out for this one.

I really don’t have anything negative to say about this film, but I will make mention of one simple caution before I launch into my praise: the film is rated PG-13 and we still brought our seven and nine-year-olds to it. While they enjoyed it and there definitely wasn’t anything inappropriate in the film (other than the previews), it was definitely intense and full of emotion. I appreciated every ounce of it, but I just want all of you to make sure you don’t think you are bringing your kids to another version of Mary Poppins.

That being said, this was definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen. Not only was the story itself amazing, but it was told in such a beautiful, lovely, and cohesive way.

This is the first time Walt Disney has every been portrayed on film, and award-winning actor Tom Hanks more than did the role justice. Even though I obviously never had a first-hand experience meeting Mr. Disney, Hanks beautifully morphed into the icon. In fact, all of the characters were perfectly cast and transported us seamlessly into the time period of the making of Mary Poppins.

For those of you who have yet to hear about this film, it’s the story of how Walt Disney convinces P.L. Travers to let him turn her book into the now iconic film character, Mary Poppins. The film takes us back and forth between Travers’ childhood that led to the writing of the book and the ‘present day’ difficulties Disney had fulfilling the 20 year old promise he made to his two daughters to bring Mary to life on screen (sorry, May Poppins…never just Mary).

This film took me on a journey far beyond Jane & Michael could ever have experienced…and just in time…Saving Mr Banks celebrates the arrival of something truly special.

This seems to happen more often than not lately with the Disney movies: I end up liking them more once I watch them on DVD than I did when seeing them in the theater.

Maybe it’s because I get the chance to listen to it over and over and over (and did I mention over and over?) again in the back of the minivan as I drive around town, so I truly hone in on the script…which I have to admit made me laugh out loud.

When I asked my kids why the liked Planes so much, they said the loved the underlying storyline (no joke – their words exactly!). Basically, they LOVE a good underdog story icon smile Disney Planes DVD Review & American Airlines Giveaway

Disney Frozen Movie About and FOR Families

The new Disney FROZEN movie is not only ABOUT, but FOR families.

Screen Shot 2013 11 28 at 12.54.31 AM Disney Frozen Movie About and FOR Families

As you celebrate Thanksgiving today, I know many of you like to take this opportunity to catch a new movie with your families.

Since Disney’s Frozen just opened on November 27, I’m sure a lot of you (including the friends we’re celebrating Thanksgiving with) plan on seeing Frozen this weekend. In fact, I’ve already received multiple text messages asking what I thought of the latest of the Disney movies. So let me share a few thoughts with you…

First of all, Disney was kind enough to allow my family to attend an advance screening of Frozen, which is why I should be qualified to share a review with you. However, about halfway through the film, my son started to feel sick, so I spent the last half of the movie in and out of the bathroom with him icon sad Disney Frozen Movie About and FOR Families

We also missed the major plot twist at the end, so don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you!

Here’s the overall synopsis:
In “Frozen,” fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad) in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.

Things I enjoyed:
* I normally don’t like 3D films, but this movie was truly stunning in 3D (especially the new Disney Short that appears before the feature).
* The sisters start out as young girls, and they are SUPER cute! (My daughter can’t stop singing the song little Anna sings). On that note…
*Olaf the snowman was HILARIOUS! Great voice, great moments, great lines….simply great.
* If you’ve missed the Disney musicals, they’re Baaaaccccck!

Screen Shot 2013 11 28 at 12.55.11 AM Disney Frozen Movie About and FOR Families

Things that puzzled me:
* Speaking of music, even though my kids can’t stop singing a couple of the songs, I didn’t leave with any of them stuck in my head like normally happens with great Disney movie soundtracks. Don’t get me wrong, the characters’ voices were AMAZING, I just didn’t get lost in the music like I’d hoped I would (although Olaf’s song about summer totally had me cracking up!)
* One of the major areas of tension in Frozen never seemed to get revealed/resolved, and that still has been causing me great angst. You know me, I just love transparency – even for my Disney friends icon wink Disney Frozen Movie About and FOR Families
* As Disney does so well, they do a great job at tugging at our heart strings. I don’t know if my heart is just getting weaker as I get older, but I really wished they weren’t so tough on their main characters so early! I may be a softy, but I just wanted to jump through the screen and hug those girls!

disney frozen movie poster Disney Frozen Movie About and FOR Families

When one friend asked, “Is Frozen worth seeing in the theater or should we wait for DVD?”, I had to turn to my daughter, since I hadn’t seen the movie from start to finish.

She answered with an emphatic, “YES! See it in the theater!”

In fact, my son just asked me, “Mom, when is Frozen coming out on DVD?” So even though he only saw bits and pieces of it, Frozen was a hit for the younger crowd as well.

I can’t say it’s my favorite Disney film, but I also don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you take the family to see Frozen in the theaters this Thanksgiving, especially with the beauty of the 3D.

No matter what you do this Thanksgiving, I pray you have an amazing day. I’m thankful for each of you!

Sofia the First Floating Palace PrimeTime Movie features Ariel

As if we didn’t like Sofia the first enough already, now she has one of my favorite princesses joining her for an unforgettable under the sea adventure this Sunday night.

SOFIA TFP Logo Large FNL 300x280 Sofia the First Floating Palace PrimeTime Movie features Ariel

Filled with plenty of references to the original Little Mermaid movie, this PrimeTime episode of “Sofia the First: The Floating Palace” merges everything we already love about Ariel with the new charm Sofia brings to the scene.

My kids kept shouting out things like, “Mom, those are the fish from the Little Mermaid” or “That seahorse could be Sebastian’s brother!”. Obviously, no detail is too small for the folks at Disney…

For those of you who are already fans of Sofia the First, you know that Sofia becomes a princess when her mother marries the king. But just because she is a princess now, doesn’t mean she knows how to be a princess.

Her new father, King Roland, gifts her with an amulet and whenever she finds herself in a sticky situation, one of her princess friends appears to help her out.

In this very special episode, “Sofia the First: The Floating Palace” takes Sofia and her family on an extraordinary journey to Merriway Cove, where Sofia meets a young mermaid named Oona. After helping Oona untangle her fin from a net, Sofia’s magical amulet transforms her into a mermaid too, allowing her to explore the underwater world with her new friend. During their adventure, Sofia learns that mermaids mistrust humans and are angry that her family’s floating palace is in their cove. When Oona is captured by a horrible sea monster, Sofia – with a little help from Princess Ariel – must find a way to save her and create harmony between their two worlds.

133296 0073 300x168 Sofia the First Floating Palace PrimeTime Movie features Ariel

While any Sofia movie is a special event, this one hour prime special features our family’s favorite princess, Ariel, voiced by the incomparable Jodi Benson.

Jodi not only voices Ariel, the mermaid princess whose voice she first gave life to almost 30 years ago, but she also voices Queen Emmeline in the episode too.

I had the opportunity to chat with Jodi, who, like me, is the mother of two children of her own.

Of course, I had to start off by asking Jodi some hard-hitting questions about this Sofia PrimeTime feature, like how Ariel is able to return back to her mermaid state (“just like Sofia, she has the power to transform between her mermaid tail and land legs at will”) and confess my annoyance at the fact that an evil character like Cedric keeps reappearing in every episode (“it keeps the tension in the air, which keeps the boys intrigued”).

And when I asked Jodi how she kept the voice of Ariel alive and consistent all these years, her answer was quick and simple:
“It’s who I am-Ariel is me. For 28 years I’ve been living Ariel; it’s never far from me.”

But perhaps the most poignant moment for me was how Jodi we are face into every aspect of you she is and what she does. In fact, her very first words when we started our interview together spoke volumes:
“This has been an incredible God journey for 28 years…”

“The older I get, the simpler my life gets,” Jodi went on to say, “as a Christ follower, it’s a living, eating and breathing. I need to give credit to God and glory to Christ. We’re called to be light and salt. What I do for a living is my ministry…I need to represent my Jesus well.”

And represent she does.

133296 00731 300x168 Sofia the First Floating Palace PrimeTime Movie features Ariel

I’m also thrilled to let you know that Jodi (as Ariel) sings a powerful and beautiful duet with Sofia called “The Love We Share” which speaks about being devoted to family. Believe it or not, I even took notes on the song as they sang it because I didn’t want to forget the message it was sharing. Listen to just a few of the lines:
“Joining together is the key…the love we share can set them free… (let’s)learn to work in harmony”

Of course, my absolute favorite line (as a mom) came when Queen Emmeline wisely instructed her kingdom in patience, saying “Everyone must be given the chance to do the right thing.”

If your little princes and princesses simply can’t wait any longer to catch a glimpse of this Sofia special, here’s a video trailer they can watch:

You can watch Sofia and her family take to the high seas for this first-ever “Sofia the First” primetime special, “Sofia the First: The Floating Palace,” when it premiers SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24 (7:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel and THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28 (7:00 p.m., ET/PT) on the 24-hour Disney Junior channel.

Multiple sources confirm a miracle healing of a seven year old boy in Nashville, TN recently.

Things looked bleak for second grader and Disney fan, Britton Cone, as he started out his Fall Break recently.

Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review

I remember first seeing the previews for Disney Teen Beach Movie Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review when we were in the theater at another Disney movie event.

My initial thought was, “there is no way I’m going to let my kids watch that.”

Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review

Although we love most things Disney, I don’t allow my kids to watch the Disney Channel, except for Disney Junior. At the ages of six and nine, I’m just not ready to expose them to preteen shows that have a bunch of drama and nonsense; I figure there is enough time for that later when they will actually be asking for it.

To me, this movie seemed to represent everything I was trying to protect my kids from.

I was wrong…and that’s why I wanted to share this Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD review with all of you!

When Teen Beach Movie Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review aired on a Friday night, which happens to be our family fun night when we typically eat pizza and watch a movie, it was hard to resist their plea to have that be our selection for the evening.

My husband is out of town, so I decided that as I sat and watched it with them, if anything questionable came up, we would simply turn it off… And I wasn’t afraid to tell them exactly that.

The more we watched, the more even I got sucked in today catchy tunes and the story that was reminiscent of the best of the old classics that I had loved so much. It gave me a vehicle to talk to them about the new genre of musicals and to even tell them about some of my favorites like West side story on which this movie, I can only assume, was very loosely based.

As you all now, I’m a sucker for anything that has to do with dance, and this movie did not disappoint in that area. The choreography, while still embracing all the classic beach movie moves, was actually quite intricate for what I would’ve expected from a teen movie.

And of course there’s the music.

Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review

I feel like they took the best elements of the Beach boys, Grease, and the Mouseketeers to create original songs that both kids and parents could enjoy over and over again together.

In fact, my son has never asked to listen to music before and all you want to do is listen to the music from Teen Beach Movie Soundtrack Disney Teen Beach Movie DVD Review.

I suppose it goes without saying how my kids feel about it, but just in case you’re wondering, here is a sign I found he had made after picking him up from church the other day:

Disney Planes Review

My Disney Planes Review:

 Disney Planes Review

There has been a lot of skepticism about the new Disney Planes movie. And after seeing it I can say I am still ambivalent on my Disney planes review.

Even my kids were split in their opinion. My son thought it was awesome, but my daughter thought it was just okay.

I think perhaps my husband said it best. He still vividly remembers sitting in the movie theater with our son watching “Cars”. Our little man was barely able to keep the 3-D glasses on as he sat in his booster. As he watched the high-energy race scenes, he got so excited as he screamed and raised his hand to high-five him. My husband says it was a moment in time he will never forget.

In the words of my husband,”it just didn’t pack the energy and excitement I was hoping for”.

For me, I was hoping to see more of the cars characters intermingled into the movie since it has been touted as “from high above the world of cars”.

I can’t say I’d advise you to go see this film in theaters; though it’s cute, Disney Planes is not worth the full price of admission.

When your child wants to cook you breakfast in bed, the feeling of sweetness can quickly be overtaken with feelings of anxiety:
*Will they get syrup all over my white sheets?
*What will the kitchen look like when they’re done?
*Will they really expect me to eat whatever they cook???

As it turned out on this particular day, my kiddos were just trying to get ME to wake up to cook THEM breakfast IN MY BED!

The nerve.

Still, it’s hard to say no to these sweet faces, especially when they want to spend time with me on a Saturday morning. So while I cooked, I presented them with the option to watch the newest Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD title, Quest for the Crystal Mickey, that just released this May.

My kids are now 7 & 8 and while they still have a strong affinity for all things that have to do with Mr. Mouse himself, they’ve shied away from watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse recently because they’re getting “too old for that stuff”. Still, I thought the Indiana Jones-like theme and character representation just might entice them…
