A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway

STF BTN 400x100 activities A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway

When Sofia the First came on the scene last year, we celebrated with a princess party that even the boys enjoyed because of the ‘prince’ly swords and mentions in ‘Royal Prep’ Academy.

Our kids (6 & 8 at the time) LOVED the new addition to the Disney Junior TV lineup…with one exception: they couldn’t watch it.

Not because I wouldn’t allow them, but because Sophia the First came on TV while they were at school.

We had recently done away with our DVR to save money in our monthly budget. So though they had found a new favorite show, it seemed like they would never be able to watch it again.

But then the Easter bunny delivered the new Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway DVD with sing-along, there were some happy faces in the Cone family!

The one thing Disney has always done a brilliant job with his appealing to both boys and girls alike, no matter whether it’s a pirate movie or a princess movie.

The one disappointment was that the kids were expecting there to be some Sofia the First A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway episodes on the DVD as well, but it was just the full-length original movie. My daughter especially enjoyed all the add-ons that came with the film however, so that kept her intrigued and entertained.

IMAX Chattanooga Kids Review: “10 million times better than I expected!”

20130323 210840 200x300 IMAX Chattanooga Kids Review: 10 million times better than I expected!
It would be one thing for me to tell you how great my first experience at the TN Aquarium’s IMAX theater was, but I thought it would be much more valuable for you to hear my kids’ review of their first IMAX movie.

About halfway through “Born to be Wild 3D”, my 7 year old son leaned over to me and whispered, “Mom, this is 10 million times better than I expected!”

You see, I can’t exactly remember the last time I saw an IMAX movie, but I’m pretty sure it dates back to the last time Michael Jordan & Bugs Bunny partnered together for a full-length film…

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

The night before going on our first IMAX adventure, I decided to pump my kids up by showing them the Chattanooga IMAX movie trailers on YouTube. However I have to be honest; after watching the previews, my kids weren’t super excited about going to the IMAX.

Sure, the images were beautiful, but my kids were not instantly compelled to spend 45 minutes in a theater watching pretty pictures of animals.

We didn’t realize just how much those opinions would soon change…

We had three IMAX 3D movie choices:
*Born to Be Wild 3D
*Flight of the Butterflies 3D
*The Last Reef 3D

When our family was first invited to attend an IMAX movie after our day at the Aquarium, “Born to be Wild” came highly recommended. But I really thought my daughter would want to see the “Flight of the Butterflies” because the Butterfly Garden is one of our favorite experiences at the Aquarium’s Ocean Journey. We also thought the images from “The Last Reef” looked stunning, but none of us were compelled enough for that to be in the running.

So it came down to a decision between the first two, but we ultimately decided to go with the original recommendation we got because the story seemed the most interesting and heartwarming.

Born to be Wild 3D” narrated by Academy-Award® winner Morgan Freeman, documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people —saving these endangered species one life at a time.

BTBW POSTER IMAX Chattanooga Kids Review: 10 million times better than I expected!

The IMAX theater itself is something to behold, but once you put on those 3D glasses and the film starts, that’s when we were truly transported, both literally and emotionally.

I may have cried…

I am not your typical animal person: I’m allergic to most house pets, I get annoyed when I see dogs in strollers in stores and I don’t understand when people alter their travel plans for their animals.

Yet this film moved me.

Watching how these women dedicated their lives to rescuing, rehabilitating and returning these animals to their natural habitat was absolutely inspiring. And don’t even get me started on the stunning visual imagery and moving narration provided by Morgan Freeman.

Throughout this IMAX film, my kids kept leaning over to me and saying, “I’m so glad we didn’t go home early” and “I should have listened to you mom – this is better than I ever could have imagined!”.

Here are some closing comments directly from my kids. First, from my 8 year old daughter when asked what she would say to another kid, like her, who wasn’t sure if they wanted to see an IMAX movie:
It’s a lot funner than you think, it’s a huge screen, and Born to be Wild is the best (since that’s the one we saw). It was really, really good. It’s about elephants and orangoutangs. It was a great story about how two ladies who raised elephants and orangoutangs and how they released some into the wild because they were old enough. It was very cute and I loved it.

And from my 7 year old son when asked the same question (as if the “it was a million times better than I expected” comment wasn’t enough):
I didn’t really want to go because I didn’t think it would be so good… but it was really good.

Children under 3 are free at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater in Chattanooga, and if you want to add an IMAX ticket on to your Aquarium ticket, it’s only an extra $6 (Now that’s value!). The theater is about a block away from the Aquarium, so I recommend what we did: get to the Aquarium when it first opens, spend a couple hours there, catch a movie around lunch time, and then you can always return to the aquarium for more fun after the film is done!

Have you ever been to the Chattanooga IMAX 3D theater? If so, what was your favorite film?

I normally can’t stand 3D movies, but this was the first movie, animated or otherwise, where the 3D effect actually enhanced the film rather than being distracting. Tinker Bell: Secret of the Wings surprises me

image001 250x300 Tinker Bell: Secret of the Wings surprises me

Today (October 23, 2012) marks the release of the newest Disney DVD title starring Tinker Bell: Secret of the Wings!

My family had the chance to see a preview in theaters last weekend and I can’t say I was highly anticipating it. After all, this isn’t the first Tinker Bell sequel and when I see something releasing straight to DVD, it usually sets off a red flag in my mind that equates to “not as good as the original”.

But my daughter loves Tinker Bell and both kids jump at the chance to see movies on the big screen, so we went.

Instead of eating popcorn, I had to eat my words.

As I sat watching Secret of the Wings, I found myself wanting to watch it again…before it even ended! The story not only details the difference between the sinter and summer fairies, but more importantly, uncovers that Tinker Bell has a twin sister: Periwinkle!

Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu-ray makes dreams come true

CinderellaDiamondEditionBlurayComboArt 248x300 Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu ray makes dreams come true

At the stroke of midnight on October 2, 2012, Disney fans’ dreams come true because the Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu-ray + DVD combo makes it’s highly anticipated release from the Disney vault!

Of course we’re HUGE Disney fans, but as the mom of 2 small kids, we haven’t always felt comfortable allowing our kids to watch many Disney movies. Many have evil and scary villains that would actually give the kids’ nightmares. Even some of the powerful music (such as that that accompanied the Beast from “Beauty & the Beast” even struck fear in our kids.

But not Cinderella.

It was the one Disney movie we never had concerns with and freely showed our kids. We love Cinderella’s ‘stick-to-it’ attitude, her persevering joy and her uncompromising work ethic. Even the adversity she faced with her ‘wicked’ step-mother brought up great conversations at an early age.

So you can’t imagine how excited we were to hear of the release of the Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu-ray! Not only is this original classic appearing for the first time in high definition with enhanced picture and sound for a new generation to enjoy, but it also comes with a wide array of bonus features, including:
*A never before seen alternate opening sequence
*A new Disney Princess Fantasyland sneak peek
*The real fairy godmother story
*2 deleted scenes
*games & activities
And our personal favorite bonus feature:
*The new (& highly anticipated) Animated Short: Tangled Ever After

Disney Channel’s Doc McStuffins DVD giveaway

Our favorite new Disney Channel series, Doc McStuffins, has released it’s first ever DVD…and I have a copy to giveaway to one lucky SamiCone.com reader!

My daughter fell in love with Doc McStuffins from the minute it aired on Disney Channel & Disney Junior, but her love for the show got even stronger after she got to meet (AND interview) the show’s creator, Chris Nee:

See you real soon!

Targeted at children ages 2-7, “Doc McStuffins,” Disney Junior’s newest hit animated TV series is now available for the first time ever on Disney DVD and Digital Copy.  “Doc McStuffins: Friendship Is The Best Medicine” includes a DVD featuring five full length episodes, each consisting of two 11-minute stories, a Digital Copy of the episodes – perfect for kids to watch anytime, anywhere – and also comes packaged with Doc’s special Big Book of Boo-Boos with fun activities plus character and boo-boo bandage stickers.

This is not one of those frilly DVDs you often find that is over as soon as it starts. The Doc McStuffins fun goes on and on, which kids can keep enjoying even after the DVD stops with all the extra add-ins included in the case.

We’re a big fan of this show and the real-life applications it includes. As a mom, it’s obvious when a show is not designed by a parent…and you can tell that Doc McStuffins is a show created by a mom for kids AND moms alike!

My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families

My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families

When I first heard about My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Royal Pony Wedding My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families coming out on DVD, I thought it would be so cute to get for my 7 year old daughter.

After all, I had grown up with My Little Pony and thanks to the rebirth of some of the classic 80′s toys I grew up with (& the princess dress up clothes you can get for My Little Pony at Downtown Disney!), my daughter now loves My Little Pony too.

I thought it was cute how the ponies were capitalizing on the royal wedding trend which was fine by me. Having British heritage, we’ve loved following the royals and all their adventures in the last year in particular.

So I didn’t even bother to read any other reviews before asking to review My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Royal Pony Wedding My Little Pony Royal Wedding DVD Review: Not for all families.

I should have.

Don’t get me wrong, the ponies are as cute as ever (though a little too computer generated for my taste). But the modern My Little Pony movies seem to have a darker side then their predeccesor’s from a few decades ago.

It all started out innocently enough, but the plot took a drastic twist when the supposed bride turned very evil. I certainly wasn’t expecting the dark theme masked within a My Little Pony wedding movie.

Another mistake I made was that I wasn’t sitting and watching it with my children. The video actually contains multiple ‘episodes’ and the first finishes with a “To be continued” into the second episode with again, the evil undertone cliffhanger. I came up to watch with them about halfway through the first episode and was shocked at what I saw.

Not “Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen anything like this before” shocked, but “Why is this necessary in a My Little Pony movie?” kind of shock.

I’m all for suspense and antagonists to develop a plot, but this was entirely unnecessary…especially for this age group.

I did allow my kids to watch the second episode so I could finish the story to see if it resolved, but then that was it.

Considering how many other artfully crafted kids’ DVD’s there are on the market today, I wouldn’t waste your time on this one.

The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect…

p581502387 2 The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect...

Yes this is a Lorax movie review, but it might not be what you would expect…

I try not to get my hopes up too high for kids’ movies these days. Even though I love a good animated film (especially those that keep in mind that parents are usually watching the movie with their kiddos), I try not to let my expectations get too high.

However, when it came to The Lorax, I have to admit, I was pumped for this one!

It goes without saying that this is a Dr. Seuss classic. But what excited me more was that the creators of Despicable Me were also a part of the creative team behind this film.

A slight aside: I LOVED Despicable Me The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect... Now that’s the perfect example of a kids’ movie I had very low expectations of and to this day, still can’t get enough of! It’s cute, it’s clever and more importantly, shares a great message with my kids.

All the things The Lorax wasn’t.

I feel like there was a HUGE amount of hype, promotion and partnered advertising that went along with The Lorax release…and perhaps that’s what sent my expectations over the moon, but I have to admit that the film was just average.

Now don’t get me wrong, I didn’t despise it like I did Rango. No sir. In fact, my kids loved it. But in terms of shelling out my movie dollars, it’s not where I’d choose to spend mine.

7E217846 2BAD 40CD 8C19 E0F1DE6CAAE2 258x300 The Lorax Movie Review: Not what you might expect...

The DVD was just released on August 7, 2012, but I’d recommend renting it first to see if it’s something you want to add to your movie collection.
