When does US Open Tennis 2012 Schedule Start?

usopen logo When does US Open Tennis 2012 Schedule Start?
Wondering when the US Open 2012 Tennis Tournament schedule starts? I was looking for the first day of the 2012 US Open tennis tournament start date online and had trouble finding it!

So like the Olympics, I figured if I was wondering, someone else might be too!

The US Open 2012 tennis schedule begins on Monday, August 27 and runs through September 9.

Technically, qualifying play has already begun at Flushing Meadows, but Official First Round tennis matches don’t begin until this Monday, August 27, 2012.

I have mixed feelings about the US Open because it’s one of my favorite tennis tournaments (the crowds, the city, the night matches, it’s in the USA!), but I’m also sad because it marks the end of the Grand Slam competition season until the Australian Open begins January 14-27, 2013.

I also have never been to the US Open.

Well, that’s a lie. I was finally able to go on Labor Day in 2000 when I was in NYC for a friend’s wedding, but it literally rained the entire day! I didn’t even get to see one ball bounce! So I just hung out on the grounds all day and soaked up as much history as I could!

For those of you that don’t know, I’ve played tennis almost my entire life, including as a college student at Emory University:

and as a G.O. for Club Med where I just recently returned to test my skills!

Princess Fiona’s Cookie Castle Decorating at Gaylord Opryland

We recently got to experience Princess Fiona’s Cookie Castle Decorating experience Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN. It was actually the first thing we did after checking in for our Summer Fun with Shrek & Friends package and it was the perfect way to start our stay with our DreamWorks friends.

After we were seated in the Water’s Edge Dining Area (the same area where the Shrek Feast is held), a baker’s helper came out with Fiona. Even though she had a wireless mic on, it was hard to understand her, though I think she was setting up a story about how the Fairy Godmother had ordered a bunch of cookie castles and she wanted us to help her make them.

All our daughter cared about was that she got to see Fiona after taking care to braid her hair just like Fiona and put on her Princess Fiona Ogre ears….

Kariss was especially excited to show Fiona the doll she found of her at a consignment sale, and Princess Fiona seemed equally excited to meet her mini-me:

We didn’t waste any time starting in on our cookie castle decorating. We had a choice of white or green castle (we chose green), then were given white frosting and a bunch of candy to decorate with. Considering my lack of decorating skills, the kids were very grateful that daddy made it to Opryland in time to assist with this project:

Our first born dove right into this project:

And while our first-born took painstaking care in choosing what candy to use where in the castle, our second-born took equal care in choosing which candy to eat first icon wink Princess Fionas Cookie Castle Decorating at Gaylord Opryland

OH, and he also found some creative uses for the squeezable frosting that was supposed to be used as our glue:

At the end of the construction process, the kids took part in a very cute ceremony where they each received unique names from the kingdom.

Princess Fiona seemed very grateful for their help:

And of course daddy couldn’t let Fiona go without a picture with the fair princess:

To be honest, I’m not sure if I would have traveled there exclusively for this event alone, but it truly was a great way to kick off our weekend, not to mention a fun activity we all got to participate in together as a family!

In exchange for my honest opinion, our family was provided this experience by Gaylord Opryland. I’d love to hear what you thought of this experience if you’ve taken part in it as well!

Summer Olympic Opening Ceremony TV time London 2012

The London 2012 Summer Olympic Opening Ceremonies are TODAY! And if you’re like me, you want to be sitting in front of your TV and not miss a moment of the Opening Ceremony…so in order to do that, make sure you’re tuned in to NBC at 7:30 EST/6:30 CST tonight.

For some reason, we had a hard time discovering this fact, so I thought I would share it on here for all of my fellow sports fans.

This Summer Olympics opening ceremony is special to me for several reasons:
1. My daughter just turned 8 yesterday and still believes that the opening ceremonies are a continuation of her birthday celebration icon wink Summer Olympic Opening Ceremony TV time London 2012
2. The above fact could be due in part to the fact that she knows I turned 21 the day of the Opening Ceremonies for the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, the summer after I graduated from Emory University. It was a day I’ll never forget.
3. My mom is from England and is here with us right now. (If you don’t already know, my son “Britton” was named after her homeland.)
4. As a former tennis pro and an aspiring Olympic athlete, there is something unexplainable that stirs within me during every Olympics. This event is truly one that brings the world together and I look forward to it every 2 years.

So in case you’re wondering what I’ll be doing tonight at 6:30, there you go (so don’t expect me to answer your phone calls for about 3 hours tonight either!).

Bonus info: I also found out that Bravo will be carrying Olympic Tennis starting tomorrow (Saturday), so that gives me another reason to watch Bravo besides Top Chef marathons icon wink Summer Olympic Opening Ceremony TV time London 2012

Gaylord Opryland Country Christmas 2012 Announcement “Shrek the Halls”

20120718 162553 Gaylord Opryland Country Christmas 2012 Announcement Shrek the Halls

Have you heard the news? Gaylord Opryland made their 2012 Country Christmas announcement yesterday, and this year’s celebration will feature Shrek & Friends in a new ICE! adventure “Shrek the Halls” November 16, 2012 – January 1, 2013.

20120718 161256 Gaylord Opryland Country Christmas 2012 Announcement Shrek the Halls

Even though the temperature’s were skimming 100 degrees at yesterday’s press event, it was Christmas in July at Nashville’s iconic Gaylord Opryland resort! All of our favorite Dreamworks characters were there to help make the announcement and even start hanging some of the millions of lights that will go up by November to transform the resort into the most “Christmassy Hotel in the Nation” (as deemed by the Travel Channel).

You can watch just a little bit of the celebration here:

Another new addition to the 29th annual Country Christmas will be the Lorrie Morgan Enchanted Christmas Dinner & Show. This Grand Ole Opry member will replace the Louise Mandrel show you may recall from year’s past. Lorrie will be joined by her family of musicians to take audiences on an “enchanting journey through Christmases past & present, featuring songs from Lorrie’s popular Merry Christmas from London album along with many hits of her platinum-selling 16-album career”. Though I’ve enjoyed past shows, I can’t way that they have always been engaging for younger audiences, so I’m looking forward to seeing what this new show has to offer for families of all ages.

In addition to the 2 million twinkling lights, other returning favorites include the Holiday Shrektacular, Holly Jolly Town Square, The Hall of Trees and more. You’ll also be able to see one of my favorite shows, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes at the iconic Grand Ole Opry house right next to the Gaylord Opryland Resort.

If you just can’t wait five months for all this fabulousness, don’t forget that you can still celebrate Summer Fun with Shrek & Friends through September 2, 2012.

And of course, what’s a trip to the Gaylord Opryland Resort without a relaxing cruise around the Delta. I don’t care how many times we’ve done this boat ride, it never gets old!

Learning the “Balancing Act” at the Nashville Southern Women’s Show

Up until yesterday if you had asked me, I would have been quick to tell you that Sami Cone and the Southern Women’s show did not mix.

But when the “Balancing Act”(from Lifetime TV) asked me to come discover more about their 2012 Road Trip in conjunction with the show, I was eager to learn. I wanted to hear more about how they connect with their audience and who they partner with (after all, aren’t we all living our own “Balancing Act”?!)

My first surprise, however, was to discover that before you even enter the exhibition hall, you can experience the legacy of Princess Diana through a museum-quality exhibit that includes photos, videos and a collection of some of her iconic gowns, including the infamous “Travolta Dress” worn at the White House:

In fact, you can even take your own picture with Princess Di through the miracle of modern technology!
20120413 125328 Learning the Balancing Act at the Nashville Southern Womens Show

Once inside the expo, it wasn’t hard to find the pink pavilion and the “Balance Your Life” stage. I got right down to learning about the partners, such as Big Fish games & Moda by Sofia (activewear designed to fit a women’s curves – love!). I also had the chance to hear about the importance of Vitamin C through Altrient & meet Cheryl, one of the fittest women in the country:

One of the highlights of the pavilion was talking with Lynette of Demand Cures, one of the only charities that puts 99 cents of every dollar donated to the cause! A cancer survivor herself, you’ll be hearing more her and her story in an upcoming “Real Women” story:
20120413 123210 Learning the Balancing Act at the Nashville Southern Womens Show
To be honest, I was surprised to find what a big health component there was to the Southern Women’s Show! St. Thomas Health is even on site giving mobile mammograms that could be free based on your income (they also accept insurance).

But when I met Claire Ratliff of Laughing Penguin Publicity, publicist for Southern Women’s Show, I challenged her to tell me why the show is really worth my (and my readers!) time and money. After all, why would I want to pay to get in to an event that’s just trying to sell me something? (Or at least that was my perception).

Claire assured me the show was “more than just shopping, though many of the retailers offer very special discounts on their products during the show”. It’s more about coming to one place to encourage women to put themselves first, “we talk about doing it, but rarely put it into practice. The program features exhibitors who have something educational to offer to round out our lives”.

As soon as I heard ‘educational’, I perked up. As a perpetual learner, I’m always looking for people who help educate and challenge others to think about why they do what they do. She immediately took me to talk to Deidre Hall (you know, “Marlena” from “Days of our Lives” who was there to educate women and share her food & beauty books that she co-wrote with friend Lynne Bowman). What transpired over the next hour totally blew me away, but I’ll have to share that story a little later.
20120413 123227 Learning the Balancing Act at the Nashville Southern Womens ShowBoth Deidre & Lynne are at the show all weekend, so be sure to stop by and tell them “hi” from me! You’ll also have to stop by to see my friends Greg & Twila at “Twila’s Boutique” and Stacey at “Miche Bags”.

I found out the show does cost $10 to get in, but you can get discount coupons at your local Kroger, plus I have another way for you to get your money back:
If you test drive a Chevy at the show, you’ll receive a $10 Starbucks gift card – so it’s almost like going to the show for free!

Have you ever been to a show such as this? What’s your take on it?

Opryland Family Fun Night with Shrek & Friends

We got to take part in the Dreamworks Experience when it first debuted at Gaylord Opryland Resort last November, but when we were invited to the new Family Fun Night with Shrek & Friends, we were excited to check out this new offering.

This one night extravaganza was a great 24 hour getaway where the kids got to meet, dance and play with some of their favorite Dreamworks characters, but more importantly, our family got to spend great quality time together! While the kids would probably say they liked the dance party best (& getting to spread blankets out on the dance floor to watch a movie before going to bed), I would argue that having a Shrek themed breakfast delivered to my room was the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.

Don’t worry if you missed it – there will be more Dreamworks Experiences coming this Spring Break & summer (I’ve even heard there are birthday party packages for the Dreamworks lover in your family!). Of course, you can count on me to keep you posted on the best deals to take advantage of these getaways icon smile Opryland Family Fun Night with Shrek & Friends

Nashville Ballet classes not just for the pros!

There may be a misconception going around that Nashville Ballet classes are just for the pros (or at least people aspiring to become professional ballerinas). To be honest, I was one of those who believed that myth.

I figured surely, my seven-year-old daughter who had never taken a ballet class (besides the community center at the age of three), would not fit into a class at the Nashville Ballet…right?

But when I found out she could try a class for free, we jumped at the opportunity!

20120126 090021 Nashville Ballet classes not just for the pros!

One of these things is not like the other...

Even though they do have a center in Brentwood, we chose to take a class at the original Nashville Ballet facility. On the outside, the building did not look quite as grand as I had expected. But don’t let external appearances fool you; what awaited us inside was quite special.

Admittedly, there was not a lot of space for all the parents and young girls preparing for class to move around. Frankly, I was concerned at whether the instructor could manage this crew that I saw before me! But all worries ceased when Ms. Z emerged from behind the studio door.

She quickly and effectively put all the girls in one line to take them back to the studio. Her professional, strict, yet kind demeanor immediately put me at ease at the prospect of leaving my daughter in her care for an hour.

Typically parents are not allowed back into the studios (for obvious reasons: space, chaos, distractions, etc). But since I had previously arranged a tour with Jan Morrison, head of their PR, Britton and I got to see not only the studios, but some of the marvelous ‘backstage’ areas of the Nashville Ballet!

A few things notably impressed me and stood out about taking classes at the Nashville Ballet:
1. Anyone can participate
As I mentioned above, everyone it welcome! You could be wanting to introduce your two year old to ballet with a Mommy & Me class, or you may want to take a community adult ballet class.

2. They focus on technique
One of my biggest pet peeves with so many ballet studios is that they charge SO much money for classes and a recital, but they don’t teach any technique and by the time you get to junior high and realize dance is really something you want to pursue, you have to re-learn everything! (I’ve seen it happen!). At the Nashville Ballet, not only are the classes fun, but they teach you a solid foundation to build on as you grow in your skills.

3. No recital/costume fees
Assuming you can afford to put your child in ballet in the first place, most people cannot afford the fees associated with the end-of-the-year recitals. A basic costume can easily cost $80 – and don’t even get me starting if your child has to perform in morn than one dance….Forgetaboutit! At the Nashville Ballet, they have a FABULOUS costume closet, and they actually let their students use it!

4. It’s the Nashville Ballet!!!
How many people can say they’ve taken ballet classes from professional ballerinas at a professional ballet company? Yes, all the instructors are former principal dancers. Score. While your child is practicing in one studio, the principal dancers may just be practicing in the studio next to them so they can watch after class. Score again. Plus, guess where they draw talent from for their professional productions? That’s right – their students! Even though some auditions are open, it’s going to be natural for them to look to their own talent pool when a need arises. It’s just an amazing environment to learn and grow in.

Did I mention you can take a trial class for free?

I haven’t yet decided if Kariss will continue her classes there, but only because we’re trying to protect her time involvement in after school activities and she’s already committed to cheerleading this semester. But I do admit I’d love to see that little girl prancing on the Nutcracker stage next Christmas…
