Bob Goff brings Love Does to Nashville

1400203759.jpg 5 194x300 Bob Goff brings Love Does to Nashville
Part of me doesn’t want to let you know that Bob Goff (author of the incredible, two-sitting book “Love Does“) is going to be speaking in Nashville tonight because, selfishly, I’d love to be sitting front and center and pretend the two of us just happen to be chatting in a living room together.

But the passionate side of me wants to SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS (or at least the blogging equivalent to a rooftop) that you can here Bob Goff share his incredible stories for FREE tonight at 7pm at Trevecca Nazarene University.

I had heard of Bob Goff and seen his “UP”-like inspired book cover of “Love Does“, but didn’t know what all the hoop-la was about until recently.

The last time I was at Thomas Nelson for a meeting with my Tommy Nelson blogger team, I picked up a copy of “Love Does“. Last week during Spring Break, while one child was falling asleep on me, I plowed through half the book. First thing when I woke up, this time with a different child asleep on me, I ravenously finished the other half. (Hence the ‘two-sitting book’ description alluded to above…).

On one hand, I’m grateful to ‘meet’ someone that I can truly identify with – someone who’s brain goes 100 miles an hour and loves to meet Jesus through ‘ordinary’ people and everyday life experiences.

But more simply put, I was utterly inspired by someone who doesn’t just live life, but embraces every possible moment of it and sees every opportunity for what it is…an opportunity!

The difference between Bob Goff and most people is that he doesn’t just take time to strategize and plan and consider what could be done…he does it.

So I don’t care who you are or what you may be going through, I guarantee your life WILL be changed if you sit your rear end in one of those seats tonight at TNU (just don’t sit too long, because love doesn’t sit still very often icon wink Bob Goff brings Love Does to Nashville

And Bob, thank you for inspiring me, challenging me and, more importantly, returning my phone call. I promise we will have our trampoline adventure one day very soon…

I truly hope to see you there tonight. You can read more about my Tommy Nelson blog posts here.

Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan delights another generation!

It’s midnight and I just got back from seeing Peter Pan, starring Cathy Rigby, at TPAC in Nashville! I wasn’t asked to write a review, but I was so pleasantly surprised by how entertaining this show was that I wanted to let you all know that if you haven’t bought tickets for this show yet, do it now!

20130301 235709 Cathy Rigbys Peter Pan delights another generation in Nashville!

As soon as my son found out that Peter Pan was going to be opening at TPAC on his 7th birthday, his request was made official. So that’s what we did…

After dinner at his favorite (Outback), we made our way to TPAC for this show. One of the things I loved most was that it stayed very close to the classic Disney film we all love so much.

20130301 235733 Cathy Rigbys Peter Pan delights another generation in Nashville!

But what I didn’t expect was how absolutely entertaining this show was going to be! From Cathy Rigby’s high flying Peter Pan to the stupendous dance numbers, it embraced the simpleness of this classic while giving us great energy and humor that kept the adults AND kids in the audience on the edge of our seats.

I will warn you, the one thing that is different from the movie that totally freaked EVERYONE out was the mermaid – not only was she not like Ariel at all, she was actually quite disturbing, with freakishly long nails and a shriek that I thought was going to send my kids out to the lobby!

Although, one of my favorite moments of the night came in the lobby. No, not the Peter Pan cut-out I forced my kids to stand behind…

20130301 235743 Cathy Rigbys Peter Pan delights another generation in Nashville!

…but as we were leaving, we heard, “Make way for Peter Pan!”. A press person whisked Cathy Rigby right in front of us to go sign autographs for her fans. I said, “Britton, look – there’s Peter Pan!”. He looked at me funny and said, “That’s not Peter Pan; that’s an old lady!” True, my son, but if I can do 1/8 of the things that grandma did when I’m her age, I’ll be a happy camper!

Cathy flipped, sang, kicked, flew and sprinkled Pixie Dust like a champ. Considering she has four kids AND four grandkids, this Tony Award nominee knows the true meaning of entertainer.

Did we have a good night? Here’s all the proof you need:

20130301 235753 Cathy Rigbys Peter Pan delights another generation in Nashville!

As tired as this newly-crowned 7 year old was during the show, he stayed awake for the whole two and a half hours and waited until he got in the car to fall asleep.

Peter Pan runs through March 3, 2013 at Nashville’s TPAC.

UPDATE: As we were going through our day today, Britton turned to me and said, “Peter Pan was my favorite show I’ve EVER seen at TPAC”. Nuff said.

I was provided tickets for my family for this show, but no expectation was put on me to write this, I simply wanted to share with you all the fun we had!

Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must-Do’s 2012

IMG 7802 225x300 Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must Dos 2012
If you’re planning a visit to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel this Christmas in Nashville, TN, then you can’t afford to miss my “Must Do” list for Christmas 2012!

There are SO many amazing things to see and do at the Gaylord Opryland Resort hotel, especially during Christmas, that I decided to take my years of first-hand experience at the most “Christmassy” hotel in America and condense it into my top things to see and do while visiting Opryland.

I had the chance to speak with my friend (& General Manager of Gaylord Opryland hotel) Pete Weien about the 29th Annual “A Country Christmas” this year and we shared our favorite experiences Opryland has to offer this season:

First of all, here are some of my top tips for enjoying Christmas at Gaylord Opryland Hotel:
1. Take advantage of what’s free
There is so much to see and do just by simply walking around Opryland Resort: the nativity with the Christmas story being told, the beautiful lights lining the drive to the Magnolia Lobby, the new addition of the Nutcrackers throughout the resort this year and so much more! It’s worth the drive over just to walk through the property (But don’t forget your camera to take lots of pictures!)

2. Eat at an Opryland restaurant and Valet Park for free!
Yes, when you eat at one of the Opryland sit-down restaurants, your valet parking is validated! My favorites are the fries at the Irish Pub and the table-side freshly made guacamole at Solario.

3. Avoid the weekends
It is nearly impossible to get off the highway during the weekends, sometimes resulting in a 2-3 mile line off the exit. If you are planning a trip to ICE! or the Rockettes during the weekend, allow an extra hour just for travel/parking from the highway.

4. Park at Opry Mills
Now that the Opry Mills Outlet Mall is back open, we once again have a first-rate outlet mall right in our backyard…and it happens to literally be in the backyard of the Opryland hotel! Why not park in the Opry Mills lot situated between the Grand Ole Opry and the new Opryland Events center (where ICE! is) and then you’ll be perfectly poised to take in everything Opryland has to offer (ICE!, Rockettes, shopping and all that lives inside the Opryland resort!).

5. Wear Comfy Shoes
Gaylord Opryland is a lot of things…but it’s not small! You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure to invest a pair of cute shoes or boots ladies! (Remember point 4 above!). Pack a variety of shoes for the kids so they don’t get blisters and don’t forget a pair of flip flops for the indoor pool!

My next best advice would be to book a 3 day package at Opryland to take it all in at your leisure.

Book a Gaylord Opryland DreamWorks Christmas Package

If you have kids, they’re going to love the Christmassy Dreamworks Experience Package! For us, this is the ultimate way to enjoy ALL that Opryland offers during Christmas and not have to worry about opening our wallet once we’re there! Packages start at $199 and include the following:
Accommodations at Gaylord Opryland Resort, Upgraded ICE! VIP Experience ticket including front of line access to ICE! featuring DreamWorks Shrek the Halls, a piping cup of delicious hot chocolate and a Gingy Meet and Greet, ShrekFeast Interactive Character Meal (our kids’ favorite!), DreamWorks Character Holiday Meet & Greets, Scavenger Hunt featuring “Rise of the Guardians”, VIP seating for the Holiday Shrektacular, UPGRADED DreamWorks Collectible Madagascar Gift Bag Welcome Amenity with Package Check-In to also include Puss in Boots/Kitty Softpaws key chains and activity book, Souvenir Family Photo and even Special Wake-Up Calls by DreamWorks Characters!

I know not everyone can afford the time or money for an Opryland Christmas package, so if you absolutely have to pick and choose, here are my favorite Gaylord Opryland offerings in order of preference this Christmas:
IMG 7662 300x300 Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must Dos 2012
1. The Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular
The Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular happens to be one of my favorite shows of all time (yes, I said it…and I’m not just including Christmas shows in this category!). What these women do with their legs is AMAZING, and it keeps getting better and better every year. We are so lucky to have the show right here in Nashville at another institution in its own right, the Grand Ole Opry, and it is the perfect show for families of all ages to get into the Christmas Spirit. (Read my full Rockettes show review…)

IMG 7818 225x300 Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must Dos 2012
2. ShrekFeast Interactive Character Meal
Outside of Orlando, I’m not sure where you can find character dining like this! Guests are treated to the high quality food you’ve come to expect from Gaylord Opryland while also being visited by DreamWorks characters like Shrek, Fiona & Puss in Boots. Kids love the “Swamp Juice” and “Green” chocolate fountain for dessert. I love the wide array of choices for adults too, such as the fresh berry selection and custom egg station. (Read my full Shrek Feast review)

IMG 7650 300x225 Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must Dos 2012
3. ICE!
ICE! is quite a phenomenon…especially if you live in an area (like Florida or Texas) where snow doesn’t typically fall. It takes 40 artisans from China over 3 months to create this indoor winter wonderland that depicts some of your favorite fairy tale characters. This year’s ICE! takes you through the story of “Shrek the Halls!” with Shrek, Fiona and all their friends. I think this year’s ICE! is better than ever, but even in saying that, it is a pretty hefty price tag considering it’s 9 degrees in side and you can’t stay in there that long! If you’re looking for ICE! ticket discounts at any of the Gaylord resorts, I’ve got those for you too icon wink Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must Dos 2012 (Read my ICE! review here…)

There are also a ton of other offerings at Gaylord Opryland this Christmas, such as Lorrie Morgan’s Enchanted Dinner Show and the Holly Jolly Town Square, but they’re not worth the investment in my honest opinion. I’d much rather spend my money on staying in the hotel and enjoying my surroundings rather than a dinner show with my family.

IMG 7764 225x300 Gaylord Opryland Hotel Christmas Must Dos 2012

Of course, don’t forget the other free fun, like pictures with Santa and the DreamWorks Scavenger Hunt. However, I don’t think there’s anything our family enjoys more than waking up to the voice of our favorite Shrek character, opening up the doors to our veranda and sitting out on our balcony and enjoying the atrium.

I hope you have the chance to enjoy Christmas at Gaylord Opryland not only this year, but for many years to come! What is your favorite part of the Gaylord Opryland resort at Christmas?

ICE! at Gaylord Opryland featuring is BACK and cooler than ever for 2012 – literally!

This year’s theme is based on the new short feature “Shrek the Halls” and not only felt cooler in temperature than the past years, but seemed much more intricate than ever before.

20121116 102353 Opryland ICE! 2012 Shrek the Halls cooler than ever literally!

The sculpture work in ICE! has always been beyond impressive, with over 40 artisans from China lending their talents for over 3 months to sculpt the millions of pounds of ice blocks that it takes to create this winter wonderland. But for some reason, this year’s “Shrek the Halls” themed ICE! seemed even more impressive than past years.

20121116 102402 Opryland ICE! 2012 Shrek the Halls cooler than ever literally!

The representations were more detailed and true to form, the colors were brighter and the story told through the sculptures was even more fascinating.

20121116 102411 Opryland ICE! 2012 Shrek the Halls cooler than ever literally!

At the same time, the attraction seemed even colder than ever! Of course, we all received the standard-issue blue parkas before entering to help stay warm in this frozen maze of scenes from DreamWorks’ animations’ Shrek the Halls that is kept at an average of 9 degrees, but we were still shivering. Of course, it would have helped if I’d brought gloves!

Nashville Ballet Nutcracker 2012 Youth Cast Auditions – Kariss Made it!

IMG 6406 300x300 Nashville Ballet Nutcracker 2012 Youth Cast Auditions Kariss Made it!

I know I told many of you that Kariss was taking part in the Nashville Ballet Nutcracker 2012 youth cast 2012 auditions…but what I forgot to update you on was the fact that she made it!

Yes, my 8 year old daughter who just started taking ballet for the first time this fall (with the exception of the Rec Center class she took in Florida when she was 3) not only survived her first professional audition, but she actually got into the highly prestigious Nashville Ballet 2012 Nutcracker cast.

I can’t even imagine her auditioning just a few years ago, so I’m so proud that she even put herself out there for this opportunity, but now that she’s made it, of course we’re all even more proud of her efforts!

I have to admit, I had a lot of pre-conceived notions about what life behind the scenes of the Nashville Ballet Nutcracker would be like, and so many of those have been shattered already. We’ve been delighted with her experience at the school of Nashville Ballet thus far, especially when it comes to the instruction she’s been receiving. The instructors are disciplined and professional. but so delightful with the girls.

So of course I wondered how things would change when it came to preparing for one of the biggest events of the year for the Nashville Ballet. I asked the company if I could document Kariss’ journey as a first time youth cast member, and they graciously agreed.

For the next two months, I’ll be sharing Kariss’ rehearsal schedule, costume fittings, press appearances and of course, the final performance!

So stay tuned to get an insider’s view into the glorious Nashville Ballet and the holiday magic that is the Nashville Nutcracker!

Top 6 Frugal Family Tailgating Fun Tips

Have you ever considered tailgating with your entire family? Well look no further, I have the top 6 Frugal Family Fall Tailgating tips you’ll need to get the party started without breaking the bank!

Fall is here and that means it’s time for some of our favorite sports! Here are just a few ways to save on this unique style of fall, family fun:

1. Why not tailgate with other families at your kids’ sporting events?
Create great family memories with fun ways to involve the whole family (not to mention share the cost). Plan on getting to your kids’ games a little earlier or even go to a local high school football game with another family to start your own tradition!

2. If you are going to a pro event, take advantage of what local teams are already offering.
For example, here in Nashville, our pro hockey team (the Predators) offer a Plaza Party that begins 2 hours before every home game. There’s a great crowd that comes out, and on weekend games they have a band, kids activities, face painters and more. Many NFL & NBA teams do something similar.

3. If you’re going to invest in tailgating gear, find multi-purpose items to spend your money on.
(for example my favorite piece is a folding chair that doubles as a cooler from Rakuten’s Buy.com)

*** On 10/11 only, click on Rakuten’s Buy.com HALLOWEEN PROMOTION where you get 15% back on your order in Rakuten Super Points PLUS another $5 off your order of $50 or more! ***

4. Use your stockpile to supply basics for your party food (drinks, meat, crackers, etc.), then build the rest of your menu around that.
Or pick items that will double duty. For instance, I had a lot of taco kits & barbeque sauce on hand already, so I bought a pork roast that I slow cooked with BBQ sauce and Coke that can double as BBQ pork sandwiches (with cole slaw) as well as BBQ pork tacos! (Recipes found in Ultimate SEC cookbook).

5. When you do plan the rest of your party food, pick a fun focal point:
A great dip in a football bowl, cups guests can take home, cupcakes with team logo, etc.

6. Have games for the kids to keep them busy while the big game is going on…even if you’re just ‘tailgating’ at home! (flag football, cornhole, etc)

What are your favorite ways to tailgate with your family, especially when kids are involved?
