Oreck Air $500 giveaway: Why you need this…

Several months ago I was invited to a Nashville Oreck Air blogger event. Always on the lookout for natural ways to improve the air in our home for my allergy prone family, I jumped at the chance to join in and hear what all the buzz was about around their new Oreck Air purifier.

I was immediately impressed by the statistics (the clean air delivery rate, the Panasonic filter, the smart technology that saves energy & money, along with a lot of other technical terms that set them apart from any other competition icon wink Oreck Air $500 giveaway: Why you need this... , but what impressed me more was the CEO and the people behind the brand.

I have been to few other events where the head of the company is not only so passionate about their product, but the reason behind the product: ultimately making a difference in the lives of the people who will trust it enough to bring it into their home.

I came home from the event and immediately put the iPhone looking contraption in my living room. To be completely honest, while it looked fun, I couldn’t tell a great deal of difference. After a week, I decided to try it in my kids’ room, thinking that was where I really wanted the air to be the most clean. Again, not noticeably different, but there was a peace of mind that came from knowing what was being filtered from their air.

But then we moved…

If you’ve been following my story over the past couple months, then you know we just moved into what I hope will be our forever home. While we love it, there was a MAJOR issue: the odor.

The previous inhabitants partook in tobacco of some sort on a very regular basis, as was evidenced by the discolored walls and permeating smell. In an effort to eradicate this overwhelming odor, we knew we had to do 3 things before ever moving in: Re-paint, Replace the carpet & clean the air ducts.

We completed all 3 of those tasks within two weeks of each other. And while it helped, it didn’t solve the problem entirely. In fact, when we just returned from being gone for over a week, the smell in the Master Bedroom seemed to have gotten worse…to the point that it gave me a debilitating headache and prevented me from sleeping our first night back.

That’s when it dawned on me – why not bring the Oreck Air down from the kids room and try it in our bedroom?! Brilliant! Why hadn’t I thought of this before?

Within seconds, the colored sensors let me know it was working. Within minutes, literally, I could tell it was working! That night I was able to sit in my own bed for the first time without having to be surrounded by candles & other irritating air fresheners to mask the odor – it was simply gone.

Now just like I can’t tell you all the technical specs of the Oreck Air (though I’m sure a good Google search would satisfy the itch for those of you that are techy like that icon wink Oreck Air $500 giveaway: Why you need this... , I can’t promise that this air purifier will get rid of all ominous odors in your home. However, I can offer you my personal testimony.

In fact, I haven’t written a review of the Oreck Air until now because frankly, I didn’t feel like I could tell you anything remarkable that I had experienced personally with the machine. But now I’m ready to sing its praises from the roof-tops!

If you have pets, if you have kids…heck, if you’re breathing, you need to look into the Oreck Air. And fortunately, you don’t have to look far, because I’m giving away an Oreck Air purifier ($500 value) RIGHT HERE to one lucky SamiCone.com reader!

Home Air Duct Cleaning Tips

So by now you know that the primary goal to prepare our new home before moving in was to get rid of the strong tobacco smell. To best do that, we decided on the following 3 things (in this order):
1. New Paint
2. Remove old carpet and replace with new carpet
3. Clean the Air Ducts

We got great referrals for the first two (Scott from Pro-Home Solutions for the paint & Lowes in Dickson for the carpet/install), but I was on my own for the air-duct cleaning.

I started with the usual techniques: Google searches and ads from the Val-Pak home mailer. I made a couple calls and got the standard quotes, but still felt confused about what exactly I should be looking for and what questions I should be asking.

Then I happened upon Mr. B’s Air Ducts. As the “Frugal Mom” on NewsChannel5 here in Nashville, I had remembered that he had been a featured business on the station before because of his positive reputation (an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau).

When I called and spoke to Mr. B himself (aka Warren – yes, he really does answer his own phones after all these years in business!), what impressed me most was that he seemed more concerned about educating me to make sure I asked the right questions about having my air ducts clean than he was about making me his customer.

He proceeded to tell me two things in particular that set him & his company apart in my mind:
1. This is ALL he does – they’re not there to clean windows, sweep chimneys, etc, they specialize in cleaning air ducts. Plus his employees are exactly that – his employees (not contract laborers). In his own words, “I personally do not believe anybody in this industry will out clean me…People can out-price me, but they can’t out-clean me.” (Though his price was still much lower then many of his competitors!)

2. His cleaning technique – there are many people in industry that strictly do “vent line cleaning”; they offer a low price to get in the door, but all they do is vacuum the lines and spray chemical into the air returns.

Here’s what happens when Mr. B’s comes to your house:
They go under your house, cut an access hole into the trunk line (main artery) and then attach a HEPA vacuum system. They then come back to each line in house, brush it and air sweep it straight to trunk line so as not to bring any debris back into breathing atmosphere.

Once every vent is brushed/swept to trunk line, they go back into crawl space/basement and the clean trunk line all the way back to HEPA vacuum with brushes & air sweeps.

Last but not least, they literally look inside the line to make sure they got everything out of it. It’s then sealed back up with sheet metal, zip screws and foil tape and then they clean the return line out the same way.

3. Ok, I know I said two things, but this was what really sealed the deal for me: They use no chemicals in the house whatsoever. Everything they do is all natural. Warren told me, “We want you and your family to breathe a fresher air in your house, not a chemically induced air”.

When I asked if this was typical in his industry, he said, “most use a product and call it ‘sanitizing’. They will tell you it gets rid of mold and mildew. If they do, you need to find out what’s the root issues going on and not simply put chemicals in your breathing environment. If you were to actually have mold, that equals a moisture problem and needs to be addressed on its own”.

I didn’t hire him on the spot; though I probably should have. I made other calls and no-one could educate me or answer my questions the way Warren did. When I did call back to hire his company, I asked if he could further educate me so that I could share this valuable information with all of you!

Home Air Duct Cleaning Tips & Questions to Ask

Most air-duct cleaning companies will ask you how many floors your house is, how many vents & returns you have, as well as how many square feet there are, here are the questions you should ask them:
*”What kind of equipment do you use?” <You’ll hear something like brushes & air sweeps (like Mr. B’s) or a roto-brush, for example (which is a glorified shop-vac with a 2 inch vacuum hose and can only reach branch lines).

* “Do you clean vent lines or air ducts?” <It’s important to understand the difference between vent line cleaning & air duct cleaning
* “Are you going to use any chemicals in my home?”
* “Are there any fees beyond the quoted price?”

>With Mr. B’s, when you’re quoted a price, that’s exactly what it is. No-one’s going to try to change it. You can also rest assured that all workmanship is guaranteed 100% satisfaction…plus most houses will be good for 5-7 years in normal living conditions.

Oh yeah – do you want to see what they found in my air-ducts?

Those filters started out light green!

Now I know why it smelled like smoke…they actually found a pack of cigarettes in the air-ducts ( in addition to a lot else, as you can see from the pictures above).

I was appalled, to say the least.

So if you suffer from allergies, have funky smells in your home, have moved into a new home like my family, or simply want to create a healthier breathing environment for your family, I would consider looking in to having your air ducts cleaned. Just make sure to follow our guidelines above to ensure that you bring the best person for the job into your home! (Of course, if you live in the Nashville area, give Mr. B’s Air Ducts a call… any tell him Sami says hi!)

I was not paid for this article; rather I asked Mr. B if I could share his wisdom because I was so impressed with the time he took on the phone with me (on multiple occasions!)…though he did give me a bit of a discount in return for sharing my honest experience here icon smile Home Air Duct Cleaning Tips

Our House Day 15: Writing Home Blessings on Bare Floors

Here’s what’s going on in our house on day 15 since buying our home: we’re writing home blessings on our bare floors.

Since we were taking up the old carpet and replacing it, we wanted to take the opportunity to write scripture and blessings on the foundation before laying the new carpet.Ricky & I wrote the scripture that we pray with our kids every night (and have since they were born), Proverbs 6:20-23, in their rooms along with prayers for them and we wrote prayers for our marriage and what our home represents in our bedroom.20120515 215434 Our House Day 15: Writing Home Blessings on Bare Floors20120515 215446 Our House Day 15: Writing Home Blessings on Bare Floors

There’s just something special about knowing we got to strip the house of what it was and build a new foundation of what we hope and pray and it will be, not only for our family, but for all who walk in it.

Home Ownership Day 14: Laying Carpet & Cleaning Air Ducts

20120514 103631 Home Ownership Day 14: Laying Carpet & Cleaning Air Ducts

Back working in the new house today!

It’s day 14 of home ownership for us and I managed to make it back into the new house (after my emotional moment last week) just in time to meet our friends from Lowes who are laying carpet today and Mr. B’s who are cleaning air ducts today.

I learned SO much after talking to Warren, owner of Mr. B’s Air Ducts, when it comes to not only the importance of cleaning your air ducts, but also the important questions to ask when choosing someone to come in to your home to clean your ducts…so I’ll be sharing those with you soon…

Looking back, if I had it all to do again, I would NOT have both teams come it at the same time again. We didn’t have much choice in this situation just because of our time frame combined with the availability of both crews, but just keep that in mind if you’re planning something similar (not so much for ourselves, but for the ease of both crews having to work around each other).

Please pray we get this all done this week!

This is why I cried today: Home Ownership Day 10

This is why I cried today:

I know it’s day 10 and the last video I did was on day 4, but I haven’t been to the house in a few days. There’s still so much work to do packing & cleaning in our current house, not to mention my regular workload!

Just in case any of you thought I had this whole game of life figured out icon wink This is why I cried today: Home Ownership Day 10

It’s been a wonderful, yet overwhelming process, to be completely honest. I have to keep reminding myself to live in the moment and to reflect on the fact that we’re healthy, our children are with us and we have each other. If God has brought us this far, he can certainly catapult me past my fatigue & stress!

Have you ever had one of those ‘pull the car off the side of the road to cry’ days?

Day 4 of Owning a Home: mudroom cleanup & bedroom paint

It’s Day 4 of owning our home and we’re still hard at work getting things cleaned up and painted.

I’m focused on removing the wallpaper border from the mudroom, as well as debating if the color we chose for our two master bedrooms is going to work or not.

The painting has started (ceilings first) and so mom and I are starting the cleaning in the kitchen…

I can’t tell if the green is throwing us off, or if it’s just too purple (believe me, I never thought those words would ever come out of my mouth). What do you think of the paint color?

Home Ownership Day 3: Painting & Kitchen Cleaning

It’s Day 3 of home ownership for us and we’re already starting on painting and cleaning the kitchen!

Yes, we are blessed that we have about a month before we have to be out of our old place, so we really want to do things right so that once our furniture is in, we’re done!

The painting has started (ceilings first) and so mom and I are starting the cleaning in the kitchen…

Some tips on cleaning, even if you’re not moving right now, but holds especially true when cleaning the kitchen:
1. Clean from top to bottom and side to side
2. Move appliances away from the wall and clean behind them, as well as the areas that have been covered
3. Use hot, soapy water to wipe down the outside and inside of drawers & cabinets.

Do you have any tips on cleaning the kitchen quickly and effectively?

Day 2 of Budget Home Renovation: Painting Prep Video

It’s Day 2 of our budget home renovation and we’re moving right into painting prep!

Because of our need for quick turnaround time, we’re bringing in our new friend Scott (of Pro Home Solutions) to help us paint, but we’re helping our budget by doing some of the prep work. We’ve always painted our homes ourselves with “oops” paint found at the major home improvement stores, but because we needed to get rid of a strong tobacco smell and stains, this is what we’re doing:

Some tips we learned to save on your painting budget, even when hiring a professional:
1. Do all the prep work yourself: remove all window hangings, light switch plates, etc.
2. Fill the nail holes and sand them
3. Save the trim for yourself and paint it after the professionals do the walls & the ceilings
4. Paint the majority of your home in the same color – this saves on labor and supplies because the painter isn’t taking the time to switch brushes and doesn’t have to buy a lot of individual gallons of paint color

Do you have any tips on how to save on painting your home on a budget (other than doing it yourself!)?

Home Inspection before buying our house

If you heard our big news we shared yesterday, then you know we’re buying a house!

Now that we’ve made the big reveal, I wanted to catch you up on the process it took to get here. We put in an offer on the house on April 2, it was accepted by the seller the next day, and then accepted by the bank on April 4! This is amazing for two reasons:
1. We had to give our notice to vacate our apartment on April 4. I turned in the notice at 4:30pm, feeling completely peaceful it was the right decision, even though we didn’t know where we’d go if this house didn’t work out (we found out at 6pm that the bank took the offer!)

2. This was a short sale, and we’d be warned and counseled by many people that we love and respect that this process could take upwards of 6 months and most likely wouldn’t go through. Not only did the bank accept our offer two days after we made it, they did not even counter our offer!

Again, the fact that the entire process took exactly 4 weeks to close (from the time we submitted our offer) still baffles me.

Even though the house was being sold as-is, we still wanted to go through with a home inspection so that we knew where we stood with every aspect of the property. Here’s what was going through our minds that day:

Luckily, aside from a few minor tweaks, the house is very structurally sound and in good shape. Now we just have to make the house our own!

I’ll show you what we decided to tackle first tomorrow…
