What you may not know…

I’ve loved writing all my life, but you may not know that my passion for learning started very early on. In fact, I used to be known as “Doogie Howser” (those of you over the age of 30 will understand that reference icon wink What you may not know...

I earned that moniker because I started public school at the age of 6…but I started in the 3rd grade. I skipped K-2nd grade because I had a 9th grade reading level, in addition to already knowing multiplication, division, cursive and a variety of other subjects beyond my age. Thus began my propensity for over-achievement and trying new things! (If you want to learn even more about me, you can read the beginning of “My Story“).

Throughout my life, I’ve always enjoyed blazing a slightly different trail than everyone else. Even when I wasn’t sure of what was to come, I started with what I did know to be true. Case in point:

Before I really knew what I was getting into when I started blogging, I knew that Go Daddy was the place to go to grab my domain for the best price.

That was years ago, yet I still turn to Go Daddy every time I have a new web idea pop into my head (which is probably more often then it should be!) icon wink What you may not know...

Though I originally discovered Go Daddy for the value, I stayed with them for the customer service. The first time I had a question, I was shocked to discover that not only did I get to talk to a real person who I could actually understand, but they were willing to help me solve my website issues even though it wasn’t a problem that stemmed from their servers.

Turns out I wasn’t the only one who thought so. Did you know that their customer care center is award-winning and available to help online 24-7-365? Go Daddy’s staff is renowned for their tech-savvy, experience and professionalism…all of which I’ve experienced first-hand.

As the web’s largest domain name and hosting provider, they make it easy for anyone to get online with do-it-yourself website builders, Web hosting and more.

There’s a lot you don’t know about Go Daddy, including all the tools they have for bloggers. Check out www.godaddy.com to learn more.

Lysol No-Touch Kitchen System Review: a 3-in-1 cleaning power punch!

I feel like we’ve done a pretty good job at simplifying the cleaning systems around our house.

We’ve taken out unnecessary cleaners under every sink and simply put the essentials on each floor. But the one area I’ve been left puzzled about is the kitchen…

It’s been particularly unsettling to me because even though I wouldn’t consider myself a total clean freak, the kitchen is the one area of our home that I expect to be completely clean and sanitized.

The only problem was that along with that compulsion came many cleaners around and under my sink: a hand wash, a dish cleaner and a surface cleaner. It got to where people would stop to wash their hands and not know which way to turn!

Ever since I bought a no-touch soap dispenser as a wedding gift a couple years ago, I’ve been intrigued by the concept. After all, if you have to touch the soap dispenser to wash the bacteria off of your hands, aren’t you just double contaminating? But that still didn’t solve my kitchen product confusion.

Well now with the new Lysol No Touch Kitchen System, someone has finally solved my kitchen product dilemma and discovered one solution for both a clean kitchen and healthy hands!

Lysol understood that the more cleaning products you touch around the sink, the more dirt can spread around the kitchen and thus the more germs you can spread on your hands (Just take take the Undercover Kitchen System Challenge and you’ll see in plain view what I’m talking about…I only scored a 4 out of 8!).

With the No Touch Kitchen System, there now exists an automatic, hands-free dispenser designed specifically to clean your dishes, kitchen surfaces, and hands, thereby reducing your exposure to dirt and germs.

We’ve been trying the sparkling tangerine scent in our house for the past few weeks and I have to say, I love the convenience (and the streamlined look) of only having one product on my kitchen sink. It’s also really helped to clarify what to use when I’m asking my husband or kids to help me clean up in the kitchen.

If I had to criticize one thing, it dispenses more liquid soap than I would normally use if I was pumping myself. I feel like this is going to make me go through it faster and not be as great of a value as if I had control over the pump amount.

I’m not sure why no-one came up with this little gadget before now, but I’m sure glad they figured it out!

The episodes they converted to Blu-ray are: Pistachio, The Wizard of Ha’s, Moe and the Big Exit, LarryBoy and the Bad Apple, Big River Rescue, and Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Noah’s Umbrella.

If you’ve been used to watching the DVDs, you’ll be SO impressed with the clarity of the Blu-ray – it really does make a noticeable viewing difference! In addition to the viewing quality, you’ll also notice a few Blu-ray exclusive goodies on discs as well.

My Little Pony: A DVD blast from my past

The phrase everything old is new again was never more true than it is today.

In the past few months, I’ve found myself (TWICE now!) going back on my word of not buying my daughter any toys at a consignment sale when I came upon two of my own childhood favorites: Rainbow Brite & a Cabbage Patch doll. I literally was rendered powerless to say no because of the rush of happy memories that flooded me when I saw the dolls.

Even more recently, I experienced that same rush of fond childhood memories when I discovered the new My Little Pony Friendship is Magic: the Friendship Express DVD in my mailbox!

I was mildly obsessed with My Little Pony when I was a little girl. Maybe because they were so colorful and maybe my mom simply indulged me because they were so affordable icon wink My Little Pony: A DVD blast from my past

Whatever the reason, I’m thrilled that they’re making a comeback so my little girl can start building her own wonderful memories.

As a mom, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there are actually six episodes on the DVD. I have a hard time spending money on animated DVD’s that only serve up a half hour of entertainment. My kids were both home sick last week, and I couldn’t believe how long this DVD held their attention (both because of the length and story-lines).

The only thing that confused them a little bit was that the title story-line didn’t appear until a little later in the DVD and it seems there were some “mean ponies” in the initial episode, but all resolved for good…just as it should in the land of My Little Pony.

If you just want a simple way to re-live your own childhood or share it with your little girl, start out with this free My Little Pony coloring sheet:

Luck, Preparation & Opportunity

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. So naturally everyone starts conjuring up images of rainbows and pots of gold.

Others of us (who have food on the brain a bit more!) immediately start wondering when it’s acceptable to start eating corned beef, cabbage and potatoes.

Being from Chicago, my mind also drifts to parades downtown and turning the river green.

Even if you’re not Irish, chances are you’ve looked forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in one way or another. But regardless of what St. Patty’s Day stirs up in your own mind, there’s one topic that seems unavoidable this time of year: LUCK.

The “Luck ‘O the Irish” is infamous, and frankly, even those who aren’t Irish (or superstitious) hope a little of that good fortune will come their way!

While I can’t say I believe fully in this brand of “luck”, I can say that there’s something for finding yourself in the right place at the time…and then being prepared to take advantage of that moment.

Even Oprah herself seems to agree with me:
Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

Take for instance my radio gig.

I was at the station picking up a deal I bought on the Discount Shopping Club Live show. It was the end of the day and the program manager happened to be walking out the door to go home. We introduced ourselves and for the next three minutes as we shared an elevator and walked out to the parking lot, I talked with him about why I loved their station, but also how I thought I could add a much needed component that was lacking in their programming.

I now host that very show icon smile Luck, Preparation & Opportunity

Was that luck? Maybe. But I prefer to think that I had been preparing myself for an unknown opportunity. Luck my have brought me to that moment, but skill and preparation helped me deliver once I was there.

Have you ever experienced a similar situation? Or maybe you simply had a good, old-fashioned lucky day recently!

International Delight wants to hear about your lucky moments in their International Delight’s Luck of the Irish Contest on Facebook and will reward someone with their own version of a pot of gold (Be sure to check out International Delight on Pinterest while you’re at it…you know you’re already hanging out there anyway!).

If you share with me the last time good luck was on your side, you’ll have a chance to win a Keurig coffee maker and a one year’s supply of International Delight creamer!

Let me say right off the bat, that we (meaning my kids and I) both expected to see the “Minnie’s Bow-tique” episode, which it didn’t (in case some of you may be assuming the same thing). However, it did include other fun-filled, Minnie-centered Mickey Mouse clubhouse masterpieces.

What I also love is that Disney is all about the details. Case in point:

Top 2 Tips to Ensuring Your Kids Maintain a Balanced Diet

Making sure our kids’ follow a balanced diet can be challenging, especially when they’re little. But the best way we’ve found for doing so is following the 80/20 principle.

Sure, you may have heard this principle in business, management & organization before, but have you ever considered it when it comes to eating?

It simply means this: we’re going to make sure our kids are eating well 80% of the time so we don’t have to worry about the 20% of the time we can’t control.

As much as we recognize the power of healthy eating, we still want our kids to be able to enjoy the occasional birthday cake, pizza party, goldfish crackers at church, etc.

Now if they were eating junk food all the time, that would just be adding insult to injury. But if we’re making sure they’re eating as many colors of the rainbow as possible at each meal, then we don’t stress out when the occasional bump in the dietary journey shows up.

Now that doesn’t mean that the rest of the healthy eating road is an easy one…

We’ve tried it all as our kids have grown up to get them to eat healthy:
*Assigning super-powers to vegetables
*Pureeing fruit & vegetables to secretly add them to other foods
*Serving a healthy “appetizer” that must be finished before the rest of the meal is served.

Amidst it all, we’ve learned two things that remain consistent:
1. Kids change and so do their taste-buds; even if they don’t like a healthy food the first time, keep trying! Introduce it in a different way at a different meal (remember, studies show that kids often need 10 exposures to a food before they’ll accept it!)

2. The best way to get your kids to eat healthy (or take any action, for that matter) is for their parents to model the desired behavior. If they see you eating well, they’re more likely to follow (and vice versa!). Take stock of what you’re eating and make sure you’re practicing what you preach!

While you don’t want to hold it over your family that many kids around the world don’t even have food to eat, you’ll be happy to know that right now you can actually make a difference with the Get A Smile Give A Smile contest from Tyson Nuggets.

Did you know Tyson has 100% All Natural Chicken Nuggets? Now you don’t have to choose between making your kids happy with convenient foods and feeding them balanced meals.

But I’m curious, how do you ensure your child maintains a balanced diet? By joining the conversation, you and your family will have the chance to make a tangible difference in the healthy eating habits of others. That’s right, Tyson will select someone from all who participate and donate $500 in the winner’s name to a local food bank!

MapMyFitness Quaker Challenge Update

8 O 17.png?bfak=93887 samicone MapMyFitness Quaker Challenge Update

I’m one of those all or nothing kind of gals.

When I find a new _____ (insert what you will here: toy, calendar, eating plan, tv show) that I absolutely LOVE, I go gang-busters. I pour myself into that thing, often at the cost of forsaking all else.

While this can be beneficial (especially if it comes to my health), it’s usually not sustainable…which in turn, makes it not such a healthy habit after all!

Just like when I started the MapMyFitness Quaker Challenge. I loved entering my workouts and tracking my progress, but then life, work and travel took over. My challenge tracker seemed to slip further and further from my mind, until…

I received a subtle, yet friendly email asking me, “How are you doing on your MapMyFitness Quaker Challenge? We haven’t seen you in a few days.”

Ah yes! Though I neglected you, you haven’t forgotten about me!

What I’ve found to be so key whenever you’re trying to get healthy, lose weight, start exercising, etc is – accountability. It’s easy to say you’re going to do something, but unless you have someone (or something) checking in on your progress, it becomes increasingly more difficult to actually follow through on what you say you’re going to do!

I’ve found this to be a helpful tool in the midst of my life transformation journey that I’m going through. If you’re looking to make a transformation of your own, why don’t you check out the MapMyFitness Quaker Challenge? You might just be surprised at how that extra accountability finally helps you reach those goals you’ve been striving for, while helping you realize just how tangible they really are!

February is National Heart Health month. Even if it’s only 5 more minutes a day, what extra step will you take to stay fit?

For your chance to win $750 complete these two steps:

1.Share the challenge with your friends
2.Tell us that you’ve invited your friends to join the challenge AND share the extra step you’ll take to stay fit below
