Saving Money on Summer Grilling

Saving Money on Summer Grilling 225x300 Saving Money on Summer Grilling

So many people are saving money by summer grilling by following just a few simple tips, so I wanted to share them with you! You’ll be hearing me share my money-saving summer grilling tips on 94FM the Fish radio as well as Talk of the Town TV this week, but I know it can be difficult to keep up with all the tips I share on air, so I wanted to make sure you could find all the ways I’ve discovered to save time and money on summer grilling in one place.

Now don’t mis-understand me – I’m no pro. In fact, I’ve never used a real grill by myself. But because I’ve come to appreciate the health and money-saving properties of  summer grilling, I’ve taught myself a few short cuts that anyone can master!

7 Tips for Saving Money on Summer Grilling

* Marinate, marinate, marinate
-If you marinate your meats, you can buy cheaper cuts (like skirt steak or flank steak) and still pack in the flavor and tenderness. Consider checking out something like the Instant Marinater I found on Rakuten.com that not only marinates your meat safely, but is a great vessel to transport your marinated meat outside.

*Wrap it up
-Same principal as marinating, but with fish. Wrap fish and veggies in foil pouches with a little broth and/or wine & veggies, place on grill for 10 min, and you’ll get a delicious, ‘one pot’ meal, even with cheaper fish filets like tilapia.

*Fill up on veggies
-Summer veggies like zucchini, squash, tomatoes and corn are super cheap over the summer. Consider cutting costs by making kabobs (this will use less meat too!).

*Make a dry rub in large batches
-chances are you’ll be grilling multiple times over the coming months. Instead of spending upwards of $4 on a small bottle of BBQ Rub (or more for fancier varieties), mix up your own batch (using a mixture of kosher salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, dry mustard, brown sugar & chile powder) and store in an air-tight container. It will serve you well over the summer and make it easier for those ‘on the whim’ dinners.

*Smoke your meat
-Smoking meat on a tabletop smoker can be a great way to get the taste of outside without the hassle of a grill. Check out the Smoke N’Grill – for under $80, it may be just what you’re looking for if you’re like me and don’t have the patience to tend a fire and are looking for something a little more automated.

Saving Money on Summer Grilling Saving Money on Summer Grilling
*The Electric Grill – it isn’t just for apartments
-Even though grills have drastically reduced in price over the past few years, not all of us have an extra few hundred dollars laying around (not to mention those of us who live in an apartment and can’t have a charcoal or gas grill). We’ve loved our George Foreman grill for years and recently found the more robust, George Foreman indoor/outdoor grill that not only offers a bigger grilling surface, but comes with a traditional grill top and stand so you can actually grill out on the deck too!

*Outdoor kitchen
-If you haven’t won an extreme backyard makeover but still want to have a dedicated space for your outdoor summer cooking obsession, consider getting a portable/storable outdoor kitchen (like the Mac Station by Origami). It allows you to access everything you need in one place, plus doubles as a great camping kitchen!

You can watch me talk about all these tips on my “Talk of the Town” segment:

Green Outdoor Cleaning Tips in time for Summer

kids washing car washdrops 300x225 Green Outdoor Cleaning Tips in time for Summer

Earth Day is just beyond us, but with summer just in front of us, it’s still important to “Go Green”. That’s why I’ve compiled a few green cleaning tips in time for the summer season.

You might think that cleaning outside is naturally ‘green’, but there are a few important tips to keep in mind to be both earth and budget friendly!

1. Warm water does the trick
When I recently needed to clean off my patio furniture from it’s winter slumber, I was amazed at the difference using warm water made. It will reduce the amount of cleaner you use and the amount of water you need.

2. Clean the grill when warm
Carry the ‘warm’ principle over to your grill. Of course, you never want to clean a hot grill, but cleaning the grill while it’s still warm will make the job a lot easier and take less scrubbing.

3. Use Less Water & Find Natural Cleaners
Of course, if you want to protect the environment, it only makes sense to use less water. For instance, use a product like Washdrops. Washdrops is a revolutionary new product that allows you to wash your car with just one bucket of water! No hose, NO rinsing, so you save gallons of water every time you wash your car! Not only does it help comply with the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Water Act, but it is biodegradable, solvent-free, butyl free, phosphate free, and ammonia free. It’s completely non-hazardous – you can even dispose of Washdrops on a lawn or flowerbed. It has tons of household uses as well – it is amazing on windows and makes stainless steel appliances sparkle!

I’m so excited I get to give away a Washdrops prize pack, valued at $50, so one of you can start your summer outdoor cleaning on a green note! Look at all in includes:

Jackie Kendall’s “Raising a Lady in Waiting” released today – review & giveaway

41F+Z0AhEdL. BO2204203200 PIsitb sticker arrow clickTopRight35 76 AA300 SH20 OU01 Jackie Kendalls Raising a Lady in Waiting released today review & giveaway

I don’t know if I’ve ever taken the time to properly introduce you to my spiritual mama, Jackie Kendall. But I couldn’t think of a better time to do so than with a review and giveaway of her latest book that releases TODAY: “Raising a Lady in Waiting“.

I met Jackie back in the late 90′s after a back injury ended my tennis career and landed me in south Florida working with MLB. As a single woman who hadn’t yet fully given her life over to Christ, I struggled in the environment. Knowing Jackie & her husband, Ken, had served as chaplains for some of the professional baseball teams, I turned to her for help before one of her speaking events.

Right before she was to take the stage, she marched me out to the lobby, handed me a copy of her original book (and best-seller!) “Lady in Waiting” and prayed over me.

To say that was a life-changing moment would be an understatement.

Jackie Kendalls Raising a Lady in Waiting released today review & giveaway

Jackie & I getting to speak together at Lifeway’s dotMom event last September.

This week, Jackie celebrates her 46th spiritual birthday as I celebrate my 13th. Yet I am equally amazed that today, decades after she wrote the book that played such a large role in altering my life and setting my heart on a path towards discovering God, she is now releasing a new book that will help me raise my daughter to do the same.

Raising a Lady in Waiting: A parent’s guide to helping your daughter avoid a Bozo, outlines four decades’ worth of Jackie’s candid experiences with mothers who are raising daughters to navigate the challenges of relationships in our world today.

“Kids are passing school while flunking in relationships”

I cannot stress this to you enough: it is never too early to start sharing the principles in this book with your daughter. I have begun to read it out loud with my eight year old and I am so thankful to have ‘Aunt Jackie’ to help me navigate concepts that otherwise could have been extremely difficult for me to tackle on my own as a mom.

Before this manuscript went to the publisher, Jackie sent me an advanced copy and asked if I’d be willing to endorse the book. I wanted to share that endorsement with you here because not only does it sum up how I feel about Jackie, but also just how important I believe this book to be:

“Raising a Lady in Waiting is a must-read for any mom – but then again, I would read the phone book if Jackie wrote it! Her style of hard-hitting practicality mixed with insightful biblical truth always challenges me. Jackie has taken her decades of Bible study, mixed it with the time-tested truth she laid out in Lady in Waiting and compiled them into an essential manual for EVERY mom. This book will never make it to my bookshelf; it will stay prominently positioned on my bedside table as a constant reminder and reference point in raising my daughter to be a Lady in Waiting! The best part: I know that as I guide my daughter through the principles in this book, I’ll be learning and growing myself!

If you’d like to experience this book yourself with your daughter(s), or know someone who could benefit from its wisdom, you can enter to win 1 of 5 copies I’m giving away below. Or better yet, go ahead and just buy a copy for you and someone you love and start a mom/daughter book club to go through the book together!

Congratulations to Erin, Rose, Carolyn, Sherry, and Tracey for winning!

A Parenting Book Worth Reading: The Passionate Mom Book Review & Giveaway

1595555099.jpg 197x300 A Parenting Book Worth Reading: The Passionate Mom Book Review & Giveaway

One of the first pieces of advice I give parents-to-be is this: Don’t read any parenting books!

But The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill (director of iMom.com) is a parenting book worth reading…which is why I’m thrilled Susan offered me a chance to both review this book and offer a copy to giveaway to one of you!

Our parenting journey is just that…OUR journey. Which is why I usually tell new parents to stay away from all the ‘parenting manuals’ out there. While there are some fabulous reads, often they become a source of guilt and distraction rather than what they are meant to be, a source of help navigating one of the most important jobs most of us will ever have.

However, The Passionate Mom is much more than a manual; it is a thoughtful roadmap for how a passionate mom can parent almost any child…confidently.

And that is a key word, not only when it comes to parenting, but for life in general: confidence.

In fact, I was just listening to an old sermon from my Florida pastor, Dr. Tom Mullins, based on his book called The Confidence Factor. He mentioned an anonymous quote that stuck with me, “Confidence and courage come through preparation and practice.”

Did you hear that?

Parenting is not about perfection. This resonated greatly as I read a similar comment from Susan, “No mom can control her child’s future, but every mom can parent well.”

Just because we cannot control does not mean we cannot plan, prepare and practice. And I think no-one would be more surprised than Susan herself that she uncovered a parenting plan encompassing these principles based on the Old Testament book of Nehemiah.

In fact, Susan discovered a pattern of “P’s” in Nehemiah that provide the overall foundation for her book. I love how she showcases them right in the introduction of her book:

(Nehemiah) perceived the situation, he pondered every task, he was driven with passion to search for solutions, he prayed for direction, he patiently waited for opportunities, he methodically prepared to take action, he maintained his purpose, he developed the plan and he persevered through problems to the end.

The Passionate Mom, written by a mom of five, is such a worthwhile investment of your time, that I asked Thomas Nelson if I could give a copy away, and they agreed. So please take the time to enter to win a copy below or better yet, support my friend Susan and buy a copy from ThomasNelson.com right now! (You’ll also save 20% off when you click the link I provided).

Congratulations to Lindsey S. for winning a copy of The Passionate Mom!

A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway

STF BTN 400x100 activities A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway

When Sofia the First came on the scene last year, we celebrated with a princess party that even the boys enjoyed because of the ‘prince’ly swords and mentions in ‘Royal Prep’ Academy.

Our kids (6 & 8 at the time) LOVED the new addition to the Disney Junior TV lineup…with one exception: they couldn’t watch it.

Not because I wouldn’t allow them, but because Sophia the First came on TV while they were at school.

We had recently done away with our DVR to save money in our monthly budget. So though they had found a new favorite show, it seemed like they would never be able to watch it again.

But then the Easter bunny delivered the new Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess A Princess Movie Even Brothers Will Love: Sofia the First Giveaway DVD with sing-along, there were some happy faces in the Cone family!

The one thing Disney has always done a brilliant job with his appealing to both boys and girls alike, no matter whether it’s a pirate movie or a princess movie.

My daughter especially enjoyed all the add-ons that came with the film however, so that kept her intrigued and entertained.

How to Keep Your Kids Honest: 30 Ways in 30 Days of April

Screen Shot 2013 03 13 at 1.02.36 PM 300x241 How to Keep Your Kids Honest: 30 Ways in 30 Days of April

If you’re like me (or most parents for that matter!), you struggle with how to keep your kids honest. Since April 30 is National Honesty Day, I wanted to help you teach your kids honesty in a more clever, bite size way.

I’ve come up with 30 Ways in the 30 Days of April to help keep your kids honest. I’ve shared the entire list of honesty tips of on my April Tommy Nelson blog post, but I wanted to share the top 10 to get you started encouraging your kids to walk in the ways of honesty and truth.

Top Ways to Keep Your Kids Honest:

1. Keep them accountable for their actions
2. Listen as they speak to friends & siblings
3. Have them put a penny in a jar every time they don’t tell the ‘whole’ truth
4. Share the difference between manipulation & persuasion
5. Set a good example before them
6. Encourage them when they tell the truth in a difficult situation
7. Ask little ones if they know the difference between right and wrong
8. Explain the difference between ‘telling the truth’ and ‘being honest’
9. Talk about what it means to live an ‘honest life’
10. Discourage telling ‘fibs’

(Remember, you can read my entire list of 30 Ways over on TommyNelson.com)

If you really want a helpful tool to help your kids live our the principles of being honest and doing the right thing, then check out this DVD resource from Tommy Nelson:

An Instant First Grade Classic! What’s in the Bible Volumes 1 & 10 Giveaway

I’m not a kid person.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids, I just am not great with hoards of small children that are not my own.

I’m not the type of person you’ll see volunteering in the church nursery. (At least not very often; sometimes I get guilted into it in an emergency, but I wouldn’t say it’s my spiritual gift…)

Perhaps that’s why I have such an immense amount of respect for my children’s elementary school teachers. For the life of me, I cannot figure out where they get the patience and energy to deal with those little ones day in and day out.

So when my son’s first grade teacher asked me to “watch the class” recently while she did some makeup testing in the hallway, I froze.

Did I mention this was a group of 19 first-graders?

You’ve got to give me a break; I never even went to first grade! I jumped right to third grade when I was six, so I missed out on the land of napping, macaroni crafting, and doodling.

But how could I say no to this precious, godly woman who has done so much for me and my kiddos.

Then it came to me: movie time!

But not just any movie, mind you. Only “What’s in the Bible” was going to be good enough for this special class. The day before, I had just received the newest What’s in the Bible DVD: Volume 10 introducing the New Testament.

I ran out to the car, grabbed the DVD, popped two bags of popcorn, and poof! Let’s just call a spade a spade shall we? I was the classroom hero for those 50 minutes on that Friday afternoon.

IMG 9996 300x225 An Instant First Grade Classic! Whats in the Bible Volumes 1 & 10 Giveaway

Two things brought a smile to my face that day… well maybe three:
1. I loved hearing the squeals of delight as the movie came on. Normally I would silence the chatter, but all the kids were talking about their favorite character, what song they liked best, and how they were so excited that a new What’s in the Bible DVD was finally out. Adorable.

2. I finally got to actually watch one of these DVDs! Most often, I am listening to it while the kids are watching it in the backseat DVD player. Of course, I always stop to crane my neck for the menu feature (which is my favorite part of the whole series), but then I have to get back to driving. I kept laughing so hard sitting at the teacher’s desk that the kids kept turning! I finally had to muffle myself because I was becoming a distraction to the class icon smile An Instant First Grade Classic! Whats in the Bible Volumes 1 & 10 Giveaway

3. This all happened on my son’s seventh birthday (hence why I was hanging out at the school that day) and there isn’t a much better feeling then getting to bring your son cupcakes to school, eating lunch with him, and being the mom that puts the movie on for the class… all in one day. I scored some major brownie points, to say the least.

Watch a trailer of Volume 10

Have you checked out the newest volume of what’s in the Bible yet? Have you seen any of them at all? Well I want to change that for one lucky reader who answered NO to either of those questions. Enter below to have a chance to win both Volumes 1 & 10!
