Come to Me

IMG 7471 300x225 Come to MeAfter just finishing with another crazy morning of trying to get the kids to school on time, I sat down to read my daily thought from Oswald Chambers’ “My Utmost for His Highest”.

In it today, he describes how in Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me…”. “Come” is literally a call to action. So then why are we so reluctant to act on our faith, much less what we know is right?

As I write this, I’m thinking back to what an effort it was to wake my younger child up, get him dressed, feed him and get him out the door without every hair on his head sticking straight up in the air. In fact, I don’t know if he even brushed his teeth. But I’m also realizing that I cannot allow him to frustrate me; his inaction is a choice, just as is my allowance of his inaction.

Instead of allowing my kids (who truly have barely been alive on this earth long enough to understand what a schedule is!) to dictate my schedule, I need to set a clear expectation and be firm in standing my ground on that expectation.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about God’s word is that it is just that: steadfast, consistent and unwavering. Whether or not I like it or feel like following it everyday, it never changes. So then, what kind of a disservice am I doing for my own children when I allow our schedule and rules to change based on whether or not they feel like waking up on time?

While I’m a big believer in grace and flexibility, I’m also now realizing that I need to model the same consistency for my children as Christ has modeled for me through the scriptures.

I was never a big fan of living in Florida, mostly because of the heat. However, one weekend exemplified the perfect spring conditions and I couldn’t help but find myself down by the pool. In those brief moments, I thought to myself, “Ok…life here is pretty good.”

hiding Seeds of Faith: Hide and Seek

One of my favorite games when I was young was hide and seek. Up until the age of seven, we had this great house (which seemed huge to me) with all types of fun cracks to slip into.

My favorite was a wooden slide my mother actually built for me in my bedroom that was hollow for storage underneath (I know, I was an only child). Once I hid there for what must have seemed like an hour; the only problem was that no one was playing the game with me. I just wanted to see if I’d be missed so that I could pop out to the joy of everyone that had eventually been looking for me. Let’s just say that I did not receive the delightful reaction I had been hoping for icon smile Seeds of Faith: Hide and Seek

Will you go?

When you say that you want to follow God’s will or that you are willing to go wherever He takes you, do you really

mean it? We can hurt God with our insincerity. Are you willing to leave everything that you now find comfortable to answer the call God has placed upon your life? Keep reading

Whose presence are you in?

gods presence couple Whose presence are you in?Have you ever acted differently depending on whom you are hanging around?

When I was a university professor, I noticed that students were keenly aware of their language when they were in my office or in my classroom.  Many vulgarities may have entered their minds or formed on their tongues, but as they opened their mouth to verbalize them, they suddenly become aware of my presence and their mouths would close.  They realized that I didn’t appreciate those words and I in turn appreciated that they were sensitive to that.  However, once they left my presence, they would often slip back into the coarse language that is ever so common on college campuses and throughout our world.

Maybe you can remember back to your own school days.  Did you ever find yourself in the presence of someone you were trying to impress?  It was amazing to me how a male could be utterly charming in my presence and then transform back into a primitive creature once he let his guard down around his friends.  Do I even need to address dating back then?  For many, what happened in the living room while sitting under the watchful eye of parents and what happened after getting in the car were also two completely different scenarios.

Do you notice a pattern?  It is very easy to sin when we are not in the presence of someone we respect or an elder watching over us.  In fact, it may even seem desirable at the time. However, when we are in the presence of that person, our demeanor changes; we think before we speak, we consider before we act, and we control our thoughts.  You may be wondering who is going to follow you around 24-7 to keep you in check.  The answer is GOD.  He has already made a promise that he will never leave our side; he is always there:  I will never leave you nor forsake you. – Josh 1:5.

Now that we know he is constantly with us, the next question is, are you aware of his presence?  Take God with you everywhere!  When you wake up, when you’re in the car, when you’re at school, when you’re at work, when you’re playing sports, and even when you’re watching television.  He will guide and direct you.  His presence will guide you on the right path and guard you from sin.  His presence does not promise that we will never be challenged with sin, but acknowledging him will protect us from falling victim to it.

God’s presence will always be with you.  He is faithful.  We will all come across adversity and challenge, but if we stay focused on God’s presence in our lives, we will stay the course.

He will keep in perfect peace all those who trust in him, whose thoughts turn often to the Lord! –Isaiah 26:3 (TLB)

Choose Joy

choose joy 300x153 Choose JoyChoosing joy can be one of the most difficult decisions you make on a daily basis.

As you read this now, be reminded that all good things come from the Lord (Through him all things were made - John 1:3).  Many of us have trials in front of us or hard times ahead.  I was reminded by a stranger in church that the trials we face are no match for the joy that resides in our hearts.

I do not know what lies ahead.  I do know that I will rejoice in the Lord.  I will praise him in all things and in all circumstances (Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus -1 Thess 5:18)

If you or someone you know are going through a tough time right now, remember that it is times like these that draw us closer to God.  It is easy to praise him when things are going well, but are you as quick to sing songs of joy in times of trouble?  May you find joy in God alone today and forever!

Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. – Ps 126:5-6

Sow the Seed

angel close up Sow the SeedWhen my daughter was six months old, we began teaching her sign language.  We knew that her motor skills would develop before her verbal skills, so we taught her basic signs to help her communicate during meal time, such as “thank you”, “please”, “more” and “all done”.  We kept at it for three months before the first sign emerged from her hands.

In the same token, I began singing the alphabet song in English and French to Kariss from birth.  For nearly two years I knew she enjoyed hearing me sing it, but I had no tangible evidence whether or not it resonated with her mind.  Then one day she delighted her father and I with a full repetition of the song in both languages without any prompting on our part.

Young children exhibit a prime example of sowing the seed of faith.  Would you ever expect your child to learn their letters or numbers after only hearing them one time?  Then why is it so often the case in our spiritual walk that we give up on someone after one prayer or one invitation to church?  Just as our children hear and retain everything we say (both good and bad) without necessarily responding right away, so to does our heavenly Father hear our prayers without always providing an immediate response.

When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. – 1 Cor 15:37

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.” – Matt13:31-32

According to Your Faith

“According to your faith will it be done to you” – Matt 9:29

When I was listening to the radio yesterday morning, I heard a phrase come out of the host that was so simple yet so true.  He said, “We become what we believe”.  In other words, if we have impure or evil thoughts running around in our head, eventually those are going to affect our soul.  However, if we dwell on things that are good and of the nature of Christ, we will come closer to resembling those things.

In Matthew 9:29 we are told that things will happen according to our faith.  What does that mean?  I’ve already talked about how important it is to expect results when you pray, but before we can expect results from someone, we must believe they are capable of delivering those results.  The faith talked about in that verse translated in Greek is “pistis” in Christ. We must put our faith, our trust, our belief, our “pistis’ in that person.

Do you believe He is able to work miracles?  Do you believe He is able to heal the sick?  Earlier in Matthew 9:22 one woman believed and Jesus said to her, “Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you.”

Where do you trust your faith?  In whom do you believe?  According to that belief are the results you can expect to see manifested in your own life.

Live for the Lord

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

- Psalm 1:1-2

This first Psalm is a clear example of the difference between those who are living their lives for the Lord and those who are not.  Are you conforming to the world?  Who are you turning to for advice, support, and comfort?  Who do you surround yourself with?  Who do you depend upon for friendship and love?  Turn to God.  If you are truly one of God’s children, then you cannot walk with one foot in this world.  We are but strangers here.  Look around you.  What are you associated with?  Look to the Bible as your roadmap.  If we are on God’s team, then let’s make sure we’re studying his playbook!

Our essential prayer should be, “Lord, if I’m not living for you, I live for nothing.”
